12.1.0 devel build 2 released, for XO-1.5 and XO-1

2011-11-28 Thread Peter Robinson
The "two heads are better than one" release.

This is the first build on our way to what will ultimately become the
12.1.0 release. Its based on rawhide and the testing I did on my
XO-1.5 provides all basic working functionality including Sugar,
GNOME, networking, camera etc. gnome-shell with associated bits to
test running it using SW rendering isn't included in this release but
I'll work to get this in place for the next build.

Some of the details of this release are:
- Fedora rawhide (it will become Fedora 17)
- Sugar 0.95.2
- gnome 3.3.2
- NetworkManager 0.9.2
- evince 3.3.2 with upstreamed go-i bindings for Read
- kernel 3.1.1
- OFW q3b23 for XO 1.5
- OFW q2f05 for XO 1
- Xorg Xserver 1.12 RC1

Known issues:
- no pretty boot (hold down the Check key to see output)
- Browse doesn't work
- Read doesn't work
- Help doesn't work

It's a waste of time :-)

In terms of availability, we'll have some C2 units soon, and then a
good batch of ramp units. (Is anyone crying for hw?)

In terms of performance, for big compiles, you're better off looking
at something like a trimslice, though I wish there was an option with
more than 1G DRAM.

I hear that more grunty multicore ARMv7 SoCs are in the pipeline, but
not in the market yet. You may be able to get a devkit for one of
those :-)

My guess is that next year there'll be options...

cheers,

Great!

Does it "stick"? Or will the "auto-brighten" aspect of "auto-dimming"
kick in when a cloud comes over?

Thanks. I had the impression it was something deeper. In any case,
both our kernels' audio and PA were pretty green at the time.

Might be worth a re-visit for 12.1.0 .

as discussed on this thread on friday (i think), this part is no longer
right. there will be no extra step to get to mono mode. i.e., the
behavior of the keyboard controls will be unchanged.

 > ...
 > > - sunlight-driven auto-turnoff will go all the way to 0, but won't

this is (still) correct.

 >
 > Great!

 > kick in when a cloud comes over?

it doesn't stick currently.

if you dim (to any level) before auto-dimming happens (i.e., while
you're still inside), then auto-dim/auto-brighten will take you back
to the previous level that you set manually.

but if you manually dim while auto-dim is already in effect, your
manual change (which only caused a color --> mono switch, since the
backlight was already off) will be lost -- you'll be back in color
mode. but since the backlight is now on, this is the correct
behavior.

now, you could argue that it should go back to mono on the next
auto-dim, since that's what the user wanted last time, but that
argument would require patches to both powerd and olpc-brightness to
give it any teeth. (it's complications like this which led me to try
and simplify the whole mechanism in the first place.)

so, currently, to get mono mode every time auto-dim happens, you
have to use ctrl-brightness-down to force mono mode always.

I think we also had AV sync problems with Record on 1.5 with pulseaudio.

(We had sync problems with ALSA too, but I expect the fixes we used for
ALSA are different to ones we would have used for pulse.)

We might not be so bad as people think as its been used in SoaS for
ages and we have no real issues with it and that's a much wider HW
variety to support (and believe me we get a wide collection of weird
stuff!).

Thanks for the info. Will do.

We have some B1s "in stock". We are short on C1s because they're in
the S/R testbed. When Wad decides to disband or shrink the testbed,
we'll ship C1s (and/or C2s) more liberally...

But back to this discussion thread, a B1 is /much/ better than a
raspberry pi :-)

Not at all implying that they shouldn't hit B1 problems regularly; the
New Zealand team is doing excellent work and I'm very happy with it.

Let me know if any one need to contribute to the Sugar l10n in Sinhala.

I have been working for Sugar localization.

About the blogging community:

Some time ago we did very first translation marathon in Sri Lanka and the
quality of translation was not good.

Since the product is targeting for School Kids, we have to concern about
the quality specially those kids are in primary schools where they just
start learning their native language.

The Sugar l10n process was conducted with the help of school teachers in
Sri Lanka.

csound sources for XO-1.75

2011-11-28 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Are there any sources for csound for the XO-1.75?

While we can find the source for csound in i386i-F14 at:

There appears to be no source for ARM available in:

http://mock.laptop.org/cgit/koji.dist-f14-armv5tel-updates-11.3.0/tree/SRPMS

http://rpmdropbox.laptop.org/f14-xo1.75/

Is csound yet to be ported to ARM?

Known issues:
- Browse doesn't work
- Read doesn't work

The reason Browse doesn't work is that the OLPC-customized? hulahop
package is not included in the build. [Neither is xulrunner.]

The reason Read doesn't work is that python is unable to import 'evince'
(perhaps because gnome-python2-evince isn't in F17).
