An update here: Hystrix 1.5.12 is in rawhide working again since last week.
The update for fc28 can be found in [1].

Oh nemo.sonarqube.org is still free for opensource project, they just
changed the mein url:
https://sonarcloud.io/dashboard?id=org.ovirt.engine%3Aroot

So it might still be useful. There is this other code analysis too, so up
to you guys if you find it useful.

I fear that was me until I moved to KubeVirt and that currently no one
monitors it. It is mostly useful to generate the sonarqube code-analysis.

> but looks like we have an error in the test suite

I guess this is related to the postgresql database version provided to
travis. See https://travis-ci.org/oVirt/ovirt-engine/builds/349675802#L497.
It complains about:

psql:./packaging/dbscripts/common_sp.sql:1305: ERROR: type jsonb does not
exist

Is postgres 9.2 still correct, or is there something needed to enable
jsonb? See https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine/blob/master/.travis.yml#L17
for the current version used.

To be honest I am not sure if that free sonarqube offer still exists. You
can probably just remove the .travis.yml file.

Best Regards,

Roman

What travis does not have is build chains in the sense of multiple jobs by
different yaml files, but as Martin says the rest is there. What they have
is different steps inside one yaml file (setup, pre_script, post_script,
deployment, ...)
which can be triggered according to branches and tags.

In Kubevirt we also use a .travis.yaml which does testing and releasing
based on tags and branches [1].

Note that for more finetuned controls, they also provide a lot of
environment variables which you can reference (e.g. branch, tag, ...)

Hm, maybe it happens on some slaves only, but there always? Because it
happens pretty often.
Here is a good example:

https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/q/status:open+project:ovirt-engine+branch:master+topic:AuditLogableBase-inject

All the broken builds are because of this. And that is just after the last
rebase from Alon. Before that it was pretty much the same picture.

[ovirt-devel] Upgrade from 3.6 el7 job broken?

2016-10-13 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi,

I saw a lot of failing builds lately on this job:

http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/ovirt-engine_master_upgrade-from-3.6_el7_created/

One log which still exists is:

http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/ovirt-engine_master_upgrade-from-3.6_el7_created/3666/
It seems like the BUILD ENGINE RPM step is failing, but I can't see any
reason why:

They are on epel7 and fc23 and newer.

The package names are rxjava, archaius-core, hystrix-metrics-event-stream
and hystrix-core, exactly like the jar name.

For epel7 it will definitely work, on fedora we have to try it out.
There might be a dependency to google guava on the newer archaius. Newest
and very old archaius versions don't have this guava dependency.
At least everything except archaius-core can be taken from fedoa too.

[ovirt-devel] Arrays.asList and GWT

2016-07-19 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi List,

Seems like GWT can't handle Arrays.asList not very well. Sharing this
in case others have similar issues:

I was working on a very strange deserialization bug in combination
with GWT [1]. We had a deserialization problem after loading a VM and
trying to send the VM back to the backend.

The error looked like this:

2016-06-28 12:17:36,206 ERROR [io.undertow.servlet] (default
task-58) Exception while dispatching incoming RPC call:
java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "undefined"

It turned out that GWT could serialize an ArrayList backed by an
Integer[] array but it could not deserialize it afterwards.

In my case a list returned by ResultSet#getArray in the DAO layer was
sent to GWT:

entity.setCpuIds(Arrays.asList((Integer[])
rs.getArray("cpu_core_ids").getArray()));

After copying the content over into a regular ArrayList everything
worked fine again.

entity.setCpuIds(new ArrayList(Arrays.asList((Integer[])
rs.getArray("cpu_core_ids").getArray(

Here is also the gerrit patch set [2].

So if you see strange GWT RPC errors like the one above look out for
"Arrays.asList" in you code :).

Best Regards,

Roman

I can't agree here.
That is what transactions are for. A second layer cache normally
follows transactions. You have interceptors to detect rollbacks and
commits.
If you don't have JTA in place there is then normally a small window
where you can read stale data in different transactions (which is fine
in most cases). It does have nothing to do with where the cache is.

It is much easier to stay in sync since there is no way to by-bass the cache.

What does that mean above the Transaction boundaries?
Yes a second level cache is to have a cache across transaction
boundaries and you also have that when you place them in the DAO
layer.

You would further make it very hard to track weather you are allowed
to manipulate data through DAOs, Repositories or Services when you
don't place the basic cache inside the DAOs since you might always by
accident by-pass the cache.

For higher layer caches in singletons it is also almost a prerequisite
to have the basic cache in the DAO layer because you can then also
listen on cache changes for dependent enti

Not caching writes yourself is just a general thing. Regarding the
MacPoolPerCluster I was referring to the constraints checks. But again
most of it does not really apply now to that class anyway.

I forgot to mention one thing: There are of course cases where
something is loaded on startup. Mostly things which can have multiple
sources.
For instance for the application configuration itself it is pretty
common, or like in the scheduler the scheduling policies where some
are Java only,
some are coming from other sources. It is still good

But for normal business entities accessing parts of it through
services and parts of it through services is not the best thing to do
(if constructiong the whole business entity out of multiple daos is
complex, Repositories can help, but the cache should still be in the
dao layer).
I hope you get what I mean.

[ovirt-devel] Caching of data from the database done properly

2016-07-04 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi Everyone,

I wanted to discuss a practice which seems to be pretty common in the
engine which I find very limiting, dangerous and for some things it
can even be a blocker.

There are several places in the engine where we are using maps as
cache in singletons to avoid reloading data from the database. Two
prominent ones are the QuotaManager[1] and the MacPoolPerCluster[2].

While it looks tempting to just use a map as cache, add some locks
around it and create an injectable singleton, this has some drawbacks:

1) We have an autoritative source for our data and it offers
transactions to take care of inconsistencies or parallel updates.
Doing all that in a service again duplicates this.
2) Caching on the service layer is definitely not a good idea. It can
introduce unwanted side effects when someone invokes the DAOs
directly.
3) The point is more about the question if a cache is really needed:
Do I just want that cache because I find it convenient to do a
#getMacPoolForCluster(Guid clusterId) in a loop instead of just
loading it once before the loop, or do my usage requirements really
force me to use a cache?

If you really need a cache, consider the following:

1) Do the caching on the DAO layer. This guarantees the best
consistency across the data.
2) Yes this means either locking in the DAOs or a transactional cache.
But before you complain, think about what in [1] and [2] is done. We
do exactly that there, so the complexity is already introduced anyway.
3) Since we are working with transactions, a custom cache should NEVER
cache writes (really just talking about our use case here). This makes
checks for existing IDs before adding an entity or similar checks
unnecessary, don't duplicate constraint checks like in [2].
4) There should always be a way to disable the cache (even if it is
just for testing).
5) If I can't convince you to move the cache to the DAO layer, still
add a way to disable the cache.

For as long as there is no general caching solution with something
like ehcache or infinispan, in my eyes such small things matter a lot
to keep a project maintainable.

That are some of the best practices I have seen around caching
database data. It would be great if we could agree on something like
that. Maybe there is already an agreement on something and I am just
not aware of it.

Looking forward to hear your feedback.

Roman

Re: [ovirt-devel] Integration tests future (and very nice alternative for the DAO fixture file)

2016-07-04 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi,

an update on the ovirt-engine application wide tests.
When [6] is merged, everything is ready to use.

Please have a look on the post here:

http://rmohr.github.io/continuous%20integration/2016/07/04/application-scoped-tests-for-ovirt-with-arquillian

for a How-To and why it is implemented the way it is.

Reply here or ping me anytime if you have questions or want some help.

Happy testing :)

[ovirt-devel] Failing DAO tests

2016-06-08 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi we have failing DAO tests becaus of:

https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/56192/

Seems like the cluster can't be saved anymore:

testSave(org.ovirt.engine.core.dao.ClusterDaoTest)  Time elapsed: 9
sec  <<< ERROR!
java.lang.NullPointerException
at
org.ovirt.engine.core.dao.ClusterDaoImpl.getClusterParamSource(ClusterDaoImpl.java:255)
at org.ovirt.engine.core.dao.ClusterDaoImpl.save(ClusterDaoImpl.java:136)
at
org.ovirt.engine.core.dao.ClusterDaoTest.testSave(ClusterDaoTest.java:318)

ClusterDaoImpl.java:255 is

.addValue("switch_type",
cluster.getRequiredSwitchTypeForCluster().getOptionValue());

Seems like the the requiredSwitchType is not set for all tests and
when trying to access the getOptionValue() we have a nullpointer
exception.

Fails on my local machine and on travis:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/archive.travis-ci.org/jobs/136184841/log.txt

Best Regards,

Oh that was the wrong job. So they are enabled:

http://jenkins-old.ovirt.org/job/ovirt-engine_master_dao-unit-tests_created/

So maybe the issue is that the CI tests from old and new jenkins are
overwriting their pluses and minuses?

Ok, the failing tests on merged master patches are there.
But we are not running tests on gerrit patches currently:

http://jenkins-old.ovirt.org/job/ovirt-engine_4.0_dao-unit-tests_merged/

Were they disabled deliberately?

That seems to be another issue. When building locally and on travis we
have failing dao tests, not missing libraries.

Further, on jenkins it seems like we are not running the DAO tests
since 26th of May.

Hi,

My mock rpm builds hang on the line

Downloading:
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/maven/plugins/maven-ear-plugin/2.8/maven-ear-plugin-2.8.pom

Does anyone else have similar issues when building inside mock for
epel7 on a fedora 23 machine?\

[ovirt-devel] Sonarqube reports for ovirt-engine

2016-05-05 Thread Roman Mohr
HI all,

I have asked sonarqube if they would add ovirt-engine to their hosted sonar
instance https://nemo.sonarqube.org/. They would be happy to do that. It is
free and for open source projects only.

For those which are not familiar with sonarqube, it is a code quality
testing tool which gives a lot of architectural insights into applications
(coverity like features, code coverage, coupling, bunch of other OOP code
metrics, trends, ...).

To integrate with nemo I would add a travis.yml file which would do the
build and analysis of ovirt-engine on travis and upload it to nemo. There
are no risks four our CI if travis or nemo have issues.

That is definitely an unlucky description. This is more accurate:
 "Pinning host numa node to vm numa node requested but host numa node index
is not specified."

A user should actually never see that when we do all validations right. We
validate here numa node mappings in backend commands after REST and
frontend validations.

That's what I had in mind and I have pretty good experience with that
pattern from previous projects. I am also against autogeneration for the
mentioned reasons in that case. If you are on a greenfield project, Lombok
has a nice @Builder [1] in general but it does also not fit very well here.

For now no. What you can do with the builders reagarding to the DAO tests
is creating test scenarios for the database. So instead of adding entities
to the fixture file you can set up clean sceanrios for your tests just with
the builders in @Test or @Before methods.

Integration tests are using Arqullian with the spring transaction manager
and will probably an extra CI job which passes the right maven flags.
Arquillian is nice here because we are much closer to a real JBoss than
with Spring.

The reason why we do not use Arquillian and only the builders for the DAO
test is that you would need a full JBoss downloaded in the background to
give us a transaction manager which does the same thing as springs
transaction manager does during the build.

The JBoss people are currently working on modularizing all their JBoss
libraries (for JBoss Swarm) and I hope that in the future we can drop the
spring transaction manager and do everything with arquillian and the JBoss
transaction manager.

[ovirt-devel] Integration tests future (and very nice alternative for the DAO fixture file)

2016-04-13 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi all,

In [1] you can find some patches which are meant to improve the test
writing experience in ovirt-engine.

They provide the following things:

  A) Domain Object builders which can be used for creating and/or
persisting domain objects [2]
  B) DAO testing without writing fixtures because of the builders
  C) Integration testing for commands in conjunction with a real database
Arquillian, injectable commands and the builders [3]

# How to run what?

A) In normal unit tests just create a new instance of a builder and use it.
This should help us to get rid of all the small createDefaultVm(),
createHostWithX() helper methods in our tests.

B) In dao tests just inject them and go ahead. The advantage of not using
the fixture file is that we can now set up clean scenarios for every test
in a setup method. See example 2 below on how easy it is to set up a new
cluster.

C) Arquillian integration tests need to be marked with
"@Category(IntegrationTest.class)" and can inherit from
TransactionalTestBase. The @Category annotation makes sure that the
integration tests are only run when

mvn clean verify -DskipITs=false

is invoked. Note that these tests are then executed in the integration test
phase of maven. For them we use the maven-failsafe-plugin[5] which will
also make sure that the testing database is up to date. See [4] for more
details.

# Examples

1) Add a running VM to a host, persist everything to the database and load
all VMs which are running on the host:

VDS host = vdsBuilder.cluster(persistedCluster).persist();
vmBuilder.host(host).up().persist();
List vms = vmDao.getAllRunningForVds(host.getId());

2) Add 10 hosts with 1 GB of RAM to a cluster, persist the hosts to the
database in a DAO test:

public class MyHostDaoTest extends BaseDaoTestCase {

@Inject
private VdsBuilder vdsBuilder;

@Test
public void createHosts() {
VdsBuilder builder =
vdsBuilder.cluster(persistedCluster).physicalMemory(1000);
for (int x =0; x < 10; x++){
builder.id(Guid.newGuid()).persist();
}
}
}

3) Full integration test with arquillian and the database

@Category(IntegrationTest.class)
public class VmDaoIntegrationTest extends TransactionalTestBase {

@Inject
VmDao vmDao;

private final Guid VM1_GUID =
Guid.createGuidFromString("0fe4bc81-5999-4ab6-80f8-7a4a2d4bfacd");

@Deployment
public static JavaArchive deploy(){
return createDeployment();
}

@Test
public void shouldFailOnExistingEntity() {

vmBuilder.id(VM1_GUID).cluster(clusterBuilder.reset().persist()).persist();
// This uses assertThat from assertj:
assertThat(vmDao.get(VM1_GUID)).isNotNull();
}
}

4) Using the builders in a normal unit test without a database:

VM vm = new VmBuilder().id(Guid.newGuid()).up().build();

# How to add your own Domain objects?

There are just a few simple rules:

1) Your builder should extend org.ovirt.engine.core.builder.AbstractBuilder

2) Make sure that you only access DAOs injected into the builder during
#prePersist() and #persist(). This allows to use the #build() method also
without injections

3) #prePersist() should set all fields which are necessary to suffice
database constraints. The fields should only be set if they are not already
set before by the builder. When following this rule we can always persist
new objects to the database by simply calling myBuilder.reset().persist().

4) Mark your builder with @Repository to make them useable for our Spring
DAO tests and our Arquillian integration tests.

So have a look at the patches at [1] and let me know what you think about
them.

Best Regards and happy testing,

[ovirt-devel] ovirt-vdsmfake changes

2016-02-16 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi,

A small heads up regarding to ovirt-vdsmfake. We merged some changes today
which add support for oVirt 4.0 and make it much easier to get started with
vdsmfake.

With the changes, now it is enough to just run `mvn jetty:run` to have a
working vdsmfake.
Have a look at the new quickstart guide in the README.md [1] to see how to
get started..

Best regards,
Roman

I would love to see a short paragraph on github and on readthedocs on what
this project is about and what the aims are.
It is really hard to even find out what it is for when you are reading the
documentation.

Ok thx, after updating qemu on the host I could activate it. Should not the
first host determine which emulated machines are supported in the cluster?

I guess we should not execute an invalid SQL statement when the host does

Will at least do a clean install with nfs on monday.

Hi,

As part of the hystrix rpms there is now also a 'hystrix-dashboard' rpm.
Using it is pretty simple. Just install it with 'dnf install
hystrix-dashboard' and start jetty with 'systemctrl start jetty'. Jetty
will then listen on 8080 by default (and if you told selinux that jetty is
allowed to access the network).

Since I had to implement JMX support anyway to enable and disable hystrix
(disabled by default) I am wondering if I can remove the authentication
part. There is no sensible data in the hystrix stream and all other
services like the db health check are not protected either. It would make
it again a little bit easier to use.

All required packages will be available in rawhide the next few hours. All
builds on koji succeeded.
Also all packages for f23 were successfully build.

I would appreciate if some of you find the time to give these f23 pacakges
some karma:

archaius-0.7.3-3.fc23
 [9]
(includes archaius-core and archaius-zookeeper)
hystrix-1.4.21-4.fc23
  [10]
(includes hystrix-core, hystrix-metrics-event-stream and hystrix-dashboard)

On el7 I had to package a little bit more and the final hystrix package
itself is still missing, but some karma on the first round of packages
would be very helpful:

archaius-0.4.1-1.el7
 [11]
(includes archaius-core)
mockito-1.9.0-19.el7
 [12]
assertj-core-2.2.0-2.el7
 [13]
jctools-1.1-0.3.alpha.el7
 [14]
rxjava-1.0.13-2.el7
 [15]

I would appreciate if we would have more people in the organization there,
although it is only a mirror.
We would then also mirror the liveliness of our project on one of the most
important software platforms.

You are right, my terminology here was not clear. Swagger is just a
specification. Swagger-core and swagger-jaxrs are the ones which can create
the documnetation out of JAX-RS resources.

You just write plain jax-rs, swagger just creates a description out of it.
So the source defining the contract is pure java (jax-rs with some swagger
annotations for description, etc.).
Or am I missing the point here?

Swagger, but would require custom code generators. With less effort we

This is of course generally a difficult task. But I do not know why it
would be more difficult to write a custom swagger reader (if we even have
to, it can read the interfaces as well) .
They are pretty streight forward. Just look at [9], this contains the wole
jax-rs specific code to generate the swagger documentation.

But yes, I don't know every detail here of the engine and can't clearly say
that integrating that would just streight forward (my feeling tells me that
it would not be too hard). I am just under the impression that we would
benefit from that. Just reduces custom magic to a minimum.

Did you also consider swagger? It is made for exactly that purpose.
I created a demo in [1] which uses resteasy, weld, hibernate-validator and
swagger to demonstrate how to do DRY with jaxrs.
Would be great to hear you thoughts on that.

And there is the great swagger-ui [8] to display the documentation in a
more human readable way.

Did you consider just annotating the DTOs with JSR-303 annotations and
integrate a validator with jax-rs?

Hi Juan,

The way to specify the contract look pretty clean and nice.
I would love to read a few words about the big picture. What is the final
scenario?

Looks pretty much like we are replacing one way of annotating things with
another way of specifying things.
Could you elaborate what the benefit of that way of description is?

How would I customize endpoints with e.g. @Gzip annotations? Would I at the
end still have my JAX-RS annotates resource classes?

Currently I do not really understand where we are going here. Are we trying
to get rid of rdsl?

So basically two questions:

1) What is the final goal?
2) What speaks agains using Hibernate validator on Daos in combination with
JAX-RS annotated resources (and just removing all interfaces, as far as I
can see we only have one implementation per endpoint) and creating all
schemas and clients through SWAGGER tooling?

[ovirt-devel] Proposal: Hystrix for realtime command monitoring

2015-10-02 Thread Roman Mohr
Hi All,

I am contributing to the engine for three months now. While I dug into the
code I
started to wonder how to visualize what the engine is actually doing.

To get better insights I added hystrix[1] to the engine. Hystrix is a
circuit
breaker library which was developed by Netflix and has one pretty
interesting
feature: Real time metrics for commands.

In combination with hystrix-dashboard[2] it allows very interesting
insights.
You can easily get an overview of commands involved in operations, their
performance and complexity. Look at [2] and the attachments in [5] and [6]
for
screenshots to get an Impression.

I want to propose to integrate hystrix permanently because from my
perspective
the results were really useful and I also had some good experiences with
hystrix
in past projects.

A first implementation can be found on gerrit[3].

# Where is it immediately useful?

During development and QA.

An example: I tested the hystrix integration on /api/vms and /api/hosts rest
endpoints and immediately saw that the number of command exectuions grew
lineary whit the number of vms and hosts. The bug reports [5] and [6] are
the
result.

# How to monitor the engine?

It is as easy as starting a hystrix-dashboard [2] with

  $ git clone https://github.com/Netflix/Hystrix.git
  $ cd Hystrix/hystrix-dashboard
  $ ../gradlew jettyRun

and point the dashboard to

   https:///ovirt-engine/hystrix.stream.

# Other possible benefits?

 * Live metrics at customer site for admins, consultants and support.

 * Historical metrics for analysis in addition to the log files.
   The metrics information is directly usable in graphite [7]. Therefore it
would be
   possible to collect the json stream for a certain time period and
analyze them
   later like in [4]. To do that someone just has to run

  curl --user admin@internal:engine
http://localhost:8080/ovirt-engine/api/hystrix.stream > hystrix.stream

   for as long as necessary. The results can be analyzed later.

# Possible architectural benefits?

In addition to the live metrics we might also have use for the real hystrix
features:

 * Circuit Breaker
 * Bulk execution of commands
 * De-dublication of commands (Caching)
 * Synchronous and asynchronous execution support
 * ...

Our commands do already have a lot of features, so I don't think that there
are
some quick wins, but maybe there are interesting opportunities for infra.

# Overhead?

In [5] the netflix employees describe their results regarding the overhead
of
wrapping every command into a new instance of a hystrix command.

They ran their tests on a standard 4-core Amazon EC2 server with a load of
60
request per second.

When using threadpools they measured a mean overhead of less than one
millisecond (so negligible). At the 90th percentile they measured an
overhead
of 3 ms. At the 99th percentile of about 9 ms.

When configuring the hystrix commands to use semaphores instead of
threadpools
they are even faster.

# How to integrate?

A working implementation can be found on gerrit[3]. These patch sets wrap a
hystrix command around every VdcAction, every VdcQuery and every VDSCommand.
This just required four small modifications in the code base.

# Security?

In the provided patches the hystrix-metrics-servlet is accessible at
/ovirt-engine/api/hystrix.stream. It is protected by basic auth but
accessible
for everyone who can authenticate. We should probably restrict it to admins.

# Todo?

1) We do report failed actions with return values. Hystrix expects failing
commands to throw an exception. So on the dashboard almost every command
looks
like a success. To overcome this, it would be pretty easy to throw an
exception inside the command and catch it immediately after it leaves the
hystrix wrapper.

2) Finetuning
Do we want semaphores or a thread pool. When the thread pool, what size do
we want?

3) Three unpackaged dependencies: archaius, hystrix-core, hystrix-contrib
