Hi,

I would like to nominate Jøger Hansegård for approver rights in the Qt project.

Jøger joined The Qt Company 10 months ago and has since then been getting his
hands dirty in Qt Multimedia, and lately focusing on color management.

Jøger is a thorough and responsible engineer and I trust that he will make a
good approver for the Qt project.

Dear Colleagues,

I hereby nominate Dr. Máté Barany as an approver for the Qt project.
Máté has been a valuable contributor and reviewer, providing sound code,
guidance and input.
As a reference, see his dashboard
here:https://codereview.qt-project.org/dashboard/1010490

I fully trust his advice, expertise and judgement. I am certain that he will
exercise approver rights to the benefit of the Qt project.

I am neither working in Máté's team, nor sharing an office with him.
Máté and I do know each other personally.

Kind regards
Axel

Jimis has been working as a Software Engineer in the Qt Company since 2019 and

doesn’t leave a lot of traces in gerrit. I appreciate Jimis as a passionate,

I asked this question on the Qt Development Forum and was told to go
here instead.

I have read all 79 pages of the Apple Developer Program License Agreement :)

Section 3.3.26 says:

"Your Application must not access the Network Extension Framework unless
Your Application is primarily designed for providing networking
capabilities, and You have received an entitlement from Apple for such
access."

Section 1.2:

“Network Extension Framework” means the Documented APIs that provide
Applications with the ability to customize certain networking features
of compatible Apple-branded products (e.g., customizing the
authentication process for WiFi Hotspots, VPN features, and content
filtering mechanisms).

So my question is, would a Qt app that uses QNetworkAccessManager,
QNetworkRequest, QNetworkReply, QSslConfiguration, QSslSocket and
without any custom code for iOS use the Network Extension Framework?

[Development] Co-maintainer of QtNetwork

2020-02-19 Thread Timur Pocheptsov
Hi all,

I want to propose a colleague of mine, Mårten Nordheim, as a co-maintainer of
QtNetwork module with him
becoming the maintainer of „High-Level network access (HTTP)"* (which
essentially means QNetworkAccessManager
and related classes/code, sub-module 'access' etc.) component and me
continuing as the maintainer of "Low-level
access (Sockets, SSL, Hostname resolution, Bearer mgmt, etc)"**. Since the
first day he joined the Qt Core
and Network team several years ago, Mårten is making a significant contribution
to the QtNetwork module, which
includes numerous improvements and fixes in QNetworkAccessManager and also new
developments (among other things
he is the author of SChannel TLS backend on Windows). He has a good, solid
knowledge of QtNetwork code/components
and making him the maintainer "de jure" will help us (the Qt Core and Network
team) to optimise and streamline the
future developments in QtNetwork module.

[Development] Co-maintainer of QtNetwork

2020-02-19 Thread Timur Pocheptsov
Hi all,

I want to propose a colleague of mine, Mårten Nordheim, as a co-maintainer of
QtNetwork module with him
becoming the maintainer of „High-Level network access (HTTP)"* (which
essentially means QNetworkAccessManager
and related classes/code, sub-module 'access' etc.) component and me
continuing as the maintainer of "Low-level
access (Sockets, SSL, Hostname resolution, Bearer mgmt, etc)"**. Since the
first day he joined the Qt Core
and Network team several years ago, Mårten is making a significant contribution
to the QtNetwork module, which
includes numerous improvements and fixes in QNetworkAccessManager and also new
developments (among other things
he is the author of SChannel TLS backend on Windows). He has a good, solid
knowledge of QtNetwork code/components
and making him the maintainer "de jure" will help us (the Qt Core and Network
team) to optimise and streamline the
future developments in QtNetwork module.

Best regards,
   Timur.

Which is the opposite of QProcess and violates the naming convention. Signals
are named after verbs in the past tense and properties & property getters are
simple nouns. So "error" is the getter, "errorOccurred" is the signal.

qprocess.h:

#if QT_DEPRECATED_SINCE(5, 6)
QT_DEPRECATED_X("Use QProcess::errorOccurred(QProcess::ProcessError)
instead")
void error(QProcess::ProcessError error);
#endif
void errorOccurred(QProcess::ProcessError error);

Correct, to avoid breaking old connection syntax silently (with warnings not
noticed in code).
Now, please enumerate those many modules you are talking about? There are 4
classes in
QtNetwork doing similar changes (not touching a tricky signal, but a getter)
and I, as the
maintainer of QtNetwork, prefer it this way.

Best.

Actually both QLocalSocket and QAbstractSocket renamed the "error()"
getter to keep using "error()" signal as opposed to many other Qt
modules "errorOccurred()" signals.

Subject: [Development] QtCS19 Notes: Qt 6 Network Overview

Hi,

Following the notes taken on the Networking session:

- What to do in Networking for Qt 6
○ https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-75638 is the parent
item to track
- Get rid of stale backend
○ OpenSSL 1.1 and following supported
○ SSL2/3
- Additional TLS
○ mbedTLS contribution exists, will get it in but requires work
- QNetworkAccessmanager
○ Default policies
- Removing bearer management
○ There has been complaints about it
○ Radio interfaces as bearer are not best option
○ Legacy from S60
○ Let's just get rid of it and move on
○ Webkit used bearer management to just identify whether you're
online or not
○ However, system services exist
§ We should have something similar in Qt
§ WIP: Connection Monitoring
○ Proposal:
§ Remove it
§ Add requested features afterwards
□ Which socket is a connection using
□ Set preferred connection
- We want to avoid temporary buffers, especially in TLS case
- QSSLsocket need to change
○ Going through tcp socket is complicated
○ Lots of effort, might be too big for Qt 6
○ Similar to QDTLS, which does not go through QUDPSocket
- (Connection loss)
○ Problem not 100% clear
○ We have connection caching
○ Should not be exposed to user
- Move WebSocket to QtNetwork?
○ Not sure why this is needed in network itself
○ Currently not actively maintained
○ Before moving to QtNetwork it needs to be significantly
refactored
- Removing QFTP
○ This is about QFTP backend in QNetworkAccessManager
○ There are still public users, but how many?
○ Proposal: Disable it in 6.0 and check for amount of complaints
§ If limited (as expected) remove in 6.2 completely
- What about adding backends to QNetworkAccessManager?
○ Right now you can only exchange it
○ AP: Create research user story on JIRA
○ Help request
- What about using libcurl as a backend?
○ Not only ftp, but everything?
○ It's not the best API, but provides a lot
○ We'd have to different underlying architectures, impossible
to use libcurl with our own stuff
○ Libcurl also has its own secure transport implementation, etc…
○ Windows provides native API, what about that?
§ Mac probably as well
- More and more projects need to do certificate management etc
○ KNX, OpcUA, CoAP, …
○ Can we find an abstraction? Potentially move that into a
separate module and have Qt Network use it?
○ QTBUG-76499, QTBUG-76876
○ It's a lot of work, but might be better than duplicating less
work again and again
- QUIC / HTTP3
○ Rather wait for it to stabilize, but on the radar
- QIODevice and zero copy
○ Needs to move to QtCS core session as no time left
- How to test
○ Current testserver is probably not the best option
○ Use docker images
○ Windows is not ready for nested virtualization
○ However, might be worth considering run the network test
containers on one machine and then have the Windows VMs connect to this one.

Hi,

As most people have probably noticed, I haven’t been active on Qt Multimedia
for quite some time now.

Valentyn Doroshchuk should be the new maintainer, as he’s been the one putting
most effort into the module for the past couple of years.

Is it clear enough from the docs for 5.9 and 5.10 that it does not support
OpenSSL 1.1? In case someone still uses that and ends up replacing their
existing installation of OpenSSL without realizing.

As a bonus side-effect, users who hadn't realised they have an old, not-up-to-

Thiago, thanks for the clarification. Yeah, you have a point, I agree with
those reasons though they are more server-related and CoAP module has no one
yet. I was also thinking that having a TP status on CoAP module can help to
mitigate possible API/design problems/inconsistency.

It should not, but it's too early/too late given feature-freeze in 2 weeks - so
it's for 5.12.

Could we have CoAP as TP given DTLS will be in 5.12?

I guess having it as Technology Preview for a first release is the usual way to
go anyways. That way, the API could still be changed afterwards, but also
interested parties could get a first impression and suggest adoptions already,
even though DTLS is not available yet.

Personally, I do not see those two items (missing DTLS, release TP)
conflicting. The only "problem" which might exist, if DTLS takes too long to
implement and CoAP would stay for a very long time in TP mode.

Thiago, could you, please, clarify this?

They model their Coap client after QNAM and related classes (like
QNetworkRequest/Reply pair).

As I understand it now - DTLS or not does not affect this API much - they can
later

add QSslConfiguration/sslErrors signal(s) in their API. Am I missing something?

Subject: [Development] DTLS support in Qt

Hello

Last year at QCS, I joined the Networking discussions and one of my requests
was DTLS support. Everything else needed to support IoT was already in place,
in flight (the QNetworkDatagram class) or I could do it myself (new API for
QNetworkInterface coming soon).

DTLS was the only thing I wasn't allowed to contribute and no one else has
stepped up in the last year.

So I decided to implement it myself. I've now got a proof of concept to
support DTLS over QUdpSocket and it already manages to connect one client and
server, verify the certificate (haven't tested failure) and communicate with
itself, with the "openssl" binary and with "gnutls-serv" binary. I've got
approval from Intel to contribute it.

I'd like Qt to have DTLS support. Should *I* contribute it? This question is
important because there used to be restrictions on "US persons" contributing
cryptography-related code. I need an answer from the Qt Project.

If NO:
Then who will write it? When? Can you finish it by Qt 5.11 feature freeze?

If YES:
Then what module should it be in?
 a) QtNetwork
Would be ideal, as there are quite a few changes to QSslSocketBackend,
QSslContext, etc. that are required. We'd also reuse the dynamic OpenSSL
loading. If I can implement DTLS support in QtNetwork, I can make these
changes myself.
 b) another module, outside of qtbase
This module would be licenced LGPLv3, no commercial.
Not ideal, but workable. The changes I mentioned above would still need
to
be implemented, so we'd need a volunteer to implement them and work with
me. It shouldn't be too difficult.
 c) not in Qt
Really not ideal. Would make for a crappy API and would increase the
development time at least threefold, probably more.

I'll be really disappointed if the answer is "no, we won't accept this
contribution and we won't develop it for 5.11 either".
