RE: [e-smith-devinfo] Backup to DVD
Another solution is to install the dvd on a workstation and use your backup2ws contribution. Tapeware can also be modified to backup to a local device. The workstation version is very cheap. Darrell May [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: hardware compression, do a Master Backup, and post your summary here. Hi Tom, JMHO, this is not a development issue relating to the SME server. This is a discussion singularly about BackupEdge compression and as such does not belong on devinfo. Your requests for follow up posts may more appropriately be directed to a Microlite resource, say [EMAIL PROTECTED] or even to you directly if you so choose. Alternately, if you wish to discuss: - building an rpm for install of BackupEdge onto SME - developing and incorporating BackupEdge into the SME server-manager interface This is the place to discuss these types of SME development issues. In general I think many SME users would be interested in improved backup options for their server. Of course we prefer to work in the open source GPL environment. SME is currently bundled with flexbackup. However I'm sure we all will agree flexbackup provides only basic backup and restore functionality and is weak in overall features and ease of use. Hence the reason for this topic of discussion. With my marketing hat on, Microlite may wish to consider releasing a non-commercial 'lite' SME/BackupEdge version with upgrade path to your commercial product. I'm sure we would all be delighted in replacing flexbackup with a non-commerical integrated SME/BackupEdge product ;- Again, just my opinions. RE: [e-smith-devinfo] ANNOUNCE: QoS addon in english and french
QOS from www.e-smith.dyndns.org works great and easy to setup. The only down size is that controls all IPs and not a range. Timothée Bastin [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: Hi Cyrus, As promised, I looked again to the translated code of the cbq panel. As far as I can see, everything is translated well and I did not translate more than the necessary text parts (no important code is translated which could cause the problems). So, the problems can't be related to the translation work. I guess this newer version is just somewhat different than the older one (why should Jaime use a new version number otherwise? :)). As told earlier, an acquaintance of mine tested it on a SME 5.1.2 box and reported that it worked perfectly. To confirm this, I just installed it too and tested it myself. I also get only the first and the third (summary) screen (supposed there should be a second page of course) when I select control by service, but it gives no error so I suppose it should work now. I can't test it, because I'm not on my local network at the moment. When I choose control by equipment however, I get three pages where I can specify if the IP range is controlled by DHCP or manually on the second page. So...on a 5.1.2 box it is working properly, supposed it works when it gives no errors :) I really don't have any idea why it isn't working well under SME 5.1.2. I think you should ask this to the original contributor Jaime Nebrera Herrera. Besides that I have to buy a 2 demo equipment (3050ICP and 3100ICP) which I do not have the cost (and Synnex will not provide the cost) and commit to be certified without a knowledge of cost or products price list etc. This is bad business. When you create your wonderful add-on you can ask them to host it for you, again something they do for FREE. If they don't want to host it you can still host yourself, as some members of this list do. You have to remember that this is not a hobby for Mitel, it is a business. Re: [e-smith-devinfo] SME5.6 and current contribs
In a previous email I read that the file system did not update to ext3. If that changed is great. If you are upgrading to a different server with hardware raid you would need a some kind of migration tool (similar to Netware Migrate), but that is a different problem. Every upgrade that I have seen from e-smith takes about 4 month or more for all the contributions to work and those did not involved a major kernel change and a file system change. Charlie Brady [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: On Sun, 15 Dec 2002, jose velez wrote: I think it will take 6 to 12 month to update the current contributions 6 to 12 months??? I think it will take 6 to 12 month to update the current contributions and Vincent (e-smith.dyndns.org) already did port forwarding, fetchmail and proxy authorization for 5.6. You will need to update your commercial products like Twiggi and RAV for e-smith and your contributions. Someone might start a migration utility to upgrade the file system to a new server. Darrell May [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: If we are close to an SME5.6 GPL release, I wonder if everyone realizes that many of the current contribs need updating before they will work. In the past we have always seen the following sequence of events occur: beta release candidate ServiceLink release GPL release This time, IIUC, the reports suggest that the release candidate stage appears to have been skipped. In the past the release candidate stage was the event that really kicked everyone into gear to start updating contribs. This was based on the release candidate being considered stable with only minor if any changes thought to occur before final release. If I understand Gordon, he has suggested in essence that the current 5.6B7 + updates will most likely = 5.6 GPL. All current contribs based on the following will need to be reviewed/updated: [any kernel 2.2 specific] 5.6 uses the 2.4 kernel. Not sure if there are any that are 2.2 specific? [any ipchains specific] 5.6 uses iptables. All ipchain specific contribs need updating. There are quite a few of these. Port Forwarding, Port Opening, IPSEC, Jabber etcetera. You may know of many other ipchains contribs that will need revising. - any that use IMAP 5.6 IMAP server has changed the port (now 147/notls I believe) and the handling of IMAP mail folders via internalizing the .mailboxlist file. This means all IMAP contribs need updating. This includes all webmail and groupware/IMAP apps as well as previous contribs fixing Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express IMAP issues. User-Manager will need a review, etcetera. So, if SME5.6B7 + updates is considered to be the suggested SME5.6GPL release there is a lot of work for the community to do. Re: [e-smith-devinfo] [Announce] SME Server V5 version 5.6alpha
Since the 5.6 will not upgrade the file system to ext3 have you made any plans to develop a migrate utility to backup users, group, setup (ip, name etc), emails so you could backup to a file and re-install or built a temporary server and do a migrate server to server. Charlie Brady [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: You wanted it! Here it is! Please break it and then tell us how you did it. Enjoy! SME Server V5 version 5.6alpha6 Release notes - Aug 8 2002 The Network Server Solutions Group of Mitel Networks is pleased to announce the availability of SME Server V5 version 5.6alpha6. *** NOTE: This is a developer preview. Do not install this release on *** *** production servers. Please report all feedback to [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** *** Please include the tag [5.6] in the subject line of any feedback. *** This release includes *no* new features and updates to almost *all* packages. All changes in this developer preview release are due to the release being built on latest software versions, mostly direct from RedHat version 7.3. This includes a change to the the current RedHat 7.3 kernel (version 2.4.18-5). Package Upgrades - All packages have been upgraded to the latest RedHat 7.3 updates. - samba has been upgraded to version 2.2.5. - wu-imap has been upgraded to imap-2001a with maildir patches. Installer - The installer version being used is unmodified from RedHat 7.3. This means that the look and feel of the installer will be different and unfamiliar. If you choose to do a fresh install (on a single disk, or a mirrored pair), the install proceeds without a confirmation screen, and should complete without any further prompts. If you choose to do an upgrade of an existing server(1) the installer will stop and prompt you for further instruction at a number of points. You should accept its offer to create a swap file, and you should ask it to proceed even though it hasn't found a /etc/redhat-release file. (1) DO NOT UPGRADE A PRODUCTION SERVER WITH THIS RELEASE. Caveats --- This is an alpha release, and has had little testing. We know that it has bugs, and we want you to help us find them. Be sure to tell us about them(2). The packet filtering firewall has been re-written to use the 2.4 linux kernel's iptables firewall. The firewall may block traffic which you want to allow, or may allow traffic which you wish to block. Do not trust it as your firewall. The 2.4 kernel lacks specific masquerading modules for a number of protocols. Some applications which use these protocols to traverse a gateway may fail where they work in version 5.5. If you notice any such changes, please let us know(2). The RedHat installer does not support conversion of ext2 filesystems to ext3 when operating in kickstart mode. New installs will have ext3 filesystems but upgrades won't. Re: [e-smith-devinfo] Onstream ADR2.60 IDE TBU eval report
Before reading your email I was in the Onstream and Tech Data checking this unit since I use Tapeware. I am afraid of the quality issue with Onstream (3 drives RMA out of 3) and the high cost of the media and durability of the media. DAT are more expensive and do not have a 60GB capacity but the media is cheap and 3 year warranty for HP or Seagate. Anyway I am planning to give a try to Onstream again to see if they have improved their quality and let you know Darrell May [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: I've just been evaluating the Onstream ADR2.60 IDE TBU drive. The unit ships complete with drive, tape cartridge and TapeWareXE 6.3. My initial testing found the drive does not work with Flexbackup. I probably could fix this but did not invest any time in this. The drive ships with TapeWareXE (which I have always liked) and works quite well. The only required step to take prior to following the TapeWare for Linux installation instructions on SME is to create the following link: # ln -s /usr/lib/libncurses.so.5.2 /usr/lib/libncurses.so.4 You may download an eval of TapeWare available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish here: http://www.tapeware.com/download.asp TapeWare includes a Linux gui interface that works on SME (/usr/local/tapeware/twadmin) as well as a Windows program that permits you to remotely control the SME server tape drive from any networked Windows workstation. Perfect for remote backup and restore jobs. I've done some initial testing and have performed server backups and selective restores. All checked ok. In fact the drive performed the selective restore of two files (a typical admin task) in less then one minute. Has anyone else tried this tape drive on SME? Just yesterday we received a (very expensive looking/glossy) brochure from Microsoft entitle Competing with Linux. Now I just want to mention some of the point that were talked about: 1) Linux is not ready for real business If this was true, what are we all doing here? 2) Unlike Windows 2000 Server, there is a scarcity of skilled support for Linux. Really? 3) Linux has no single point of vendor accountability I see...h? Redhat, Suse, Mitel, Caldera... what are they? 4) Even for low-end applications,Linux performace is limited. 5)Linux offers limited scalability 6) Linux lacks key reliability features - Linux does not have functionality such as Journalled File System and Failover Clustering 7) Linux lacks a clear technical roadmap All I can say is well done to all the developers/vendors/users and resellers of linux products. We have clear made an impression on the software GIANT and now they are resorting to low tactics to try sucker unweary users into using and purchasing their sub-standard systems! In particular congrats to Mitel for proving that MS are a bunch of .. Ooops better not get carried away... Re: [e-smith-devinfo] rpms updated for SME5
Did you have a chance to check the port fowarding RPM Darrell May [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: I've rebuilt all my rpms for SME5. Fix to procmail and update to myphpnuke which now includes a full list of themes. All others were just minor name change and spec file editing to reflect these are now for SME5 but of course still work for 4.1.2. http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/ Note, still very interested in hearing feedback on my raid monitor and recovery rpms and Howto's from those that have a non-production RAID system they can test on. http://myezserver.com/docs/mitel/raid-monitor-howto.html http://myezserver.com/docs/mitel/raid-recovery-howto.html Regards, -- Darrell May DMC NETSOURCED.COM http://netsourced.com http://myEZserver.com -- Please report bugs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] (only) to discuss security issues Support for registered customers and partners to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives by mail and http://www.mail-archive.com/devinfo%40lists.e-smith.org -- Ing.
