The original config.php included in the myPHPnuke 1.8.7 download has errors on line 85. All " and \" need to be removed. This can be done by going into the Administration Menu > Preferences > Footer Messages and manually editing Footer 1 as the first admin duty. I will have this fixed in the next rpm release. Charlie has also provided some good feeback which will make it into the next rev as well. I got it.
