Re: [freenet-dev] Freenet 0.7.5 build 1476 is now available

2017-03-17 Thread CryptNode
Glad to help! The Windows and Linux sig files are working as of build
1477. The OSX installer is still signed with an expired key. Are there
plans to sign and release an updated file so it can be verified? Thanks
for your key info, I was able to pull it earlier from keys.gnupg.net.

IIRC we use a subset of whatever the JCE supports... and our subset
happens to be narrower with 1476. Put it back into context: it was
changed because the previous cipher-set was using DHE and that it is
impossible to do right in java (can't change the group).

With freenet we always aim at doing "better". In this instance, there is
a very good reason why the Intermediate profile is something we
shouldn't use: it allows for DH-based ciphers.

Should we have implemented the Secure profile instead? Probably! You're
welcome to send a patch.

2017-03-05 Thread Pascal
Yes, thank you, I was able to confirm that RSA is DOA in 1476. 1475 and
before only supported RSA so 1476 broke SSL for everyone, though I doubt
many people use it.

The bigger issue is why 1476 built at all. It has been a long time
since I did any development for Freenet. Are there not unit tests for
the SSL libraries? I wonder what that says about Fred's code coverage
in general.

Is someone trying to reinvent the wheel here? It looks like 1476 only
supports TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256. I can't imagine there
is not a SSL library that can be integrated with Fred that implements
all the common standards including detecting client support for them.

I agree with Florent "that we should switch to what others are doing
cipher-wise", and half the ciphers at the provided link are RSA. What I
don't understand is why the provided link did not go to the Intermediate
(default) security model. When something is the default that is
typically what others are doing.

PS: The news item for the website as official press release should be
delayed a bit. For publicity it would have been better to send a
news item to newspapers first and give them advance warning when
we’re going to release. I hope we can keep press release and
technical release detached enough that the press release can still
get coverage ("Freenet was updated to 1476, deployment of the update
went cleanly over Freenet itself with most nodes already running the
new version").

[freenet-dev] Freenet 0.7.5 build 1476 is now available

2017-03-01 Thread Arne Babenhauserheide
Freenet 0.7.5 build 1476 is now available.

- efficiency improvements: routing for fast nodes and spare bitmaps
- a new gif filter with improved security
- improved maintainability by replacing custom code with standard code
- show update info alongside bookmarks
- ssl fixes
- update plugins: Sharesite 0.4.4, Library v37, Freereader 6

Thank you for using Freenet!

This is my first release as release manager. Deepest gratitude to Toad,
Steve, and Florent for the release infrastructure I inherited. It is
much more convenient than it looks at first glance.

Running nodes should detect the update automatically over Freenet and
either update directly or prompt you for updating (depending on your
autoupdate settings).

- Arne Babenhauserheide

PS: The long release notes in the tag contain one error:
"semi-persistent" should be "persistent". Fixed here
