Re: [Dhis2-users] Maps of outbreaks

2014-02-15 Thread Knut Staring
Thanks Jim - I will try to find time to get more Data Entry ideas into a
Blueprint.

Also very much like your thoughts about extending the current bare-bones
app management in DHIS2 to include configuration of each app - maybe
something for GSoC?

 Hi Knut,

Nice thoughts about more flexible data entry forms pivoting in different
dimensions. And given how much easier the auto-generated forms are than
designing your own, it would be great to expand the number of cases that
one can use auto-generated forms for. Developing a detailed proposal for
this sounds like a very useful effort. Any takers?

I quite agree that we should provide tools for people who are not
programmers allowing them to configure what they want. My question about
the appropriate use of apps isn't really focused on when do we expect users
to write their own. It's more the question of when are features provided in
the core vs. when are they provided in the app store.

Speaking of which, if we provide general-purpose, configurable apps in the
app store, I wonder how we can provide a user-friendly way to customize app
metadata through DHIS, so the user wouldn't have to edit the manifest file
inside the app. We could extend the DHIS UI to be able to configure
app-specific metadata settings for an app that has been uploaded. I wonder
if the app manifest itself could describe the various system settings
choices to be made (e.g., the allowable numeric range of a metadata
setting, the list of choices, etc.) I'm not familiar enough yet with the
app manifest format to know whether it supports this already, or how
awkward it might be to graft it on. I known that OpenMRS modules, for
example, can add their own settings section to the OpenMRS UI, so they can
be configured through OpenMRS. The end result is that the non-programmer
user can simply download an OpenMRS module, install it, and then configure
it through the OpenMRS UI. The equivalent for DHIS apps could be very
useful. Or should the app include its own configuration screens, and the
configuration data is somehow stored in DHIS? (I apologize for my lack of
 knowledge about apps.)

 Cheers,
 Jim

 Hi Knut,

It sounds to me like a natural for an app (as you mentioned). If we had
 Start
date and End date in a YEARLY dataset, that might preclude two outbreaks
(by any other name) for the same year and same organisation unit, so that
might not be the best method for data entry. (And outbreaks that span the
new year would still have to be entered twice.)

Quite right, I was already wondering how to handle things that cross
years. I guess the user should select start and end dates, but these would
not be stored. Tending towards preserving the information as much as
possible through using a daily dataset - this implies lots of (generated)
datavalues for a long outbreak, but is usually for a limited number of
orgunits (the total number is over 3000). Monthly data will be interpreted
to cover all days in the month.

Interesting idea about entering through time on the same form. I wonder
what that would look like. Would the periods be columns? Given that we
already use columns for disaggregations, that might make the form too wide
-- so maybe the periods would be rows. I wonder how the number of periods
would be determined -- perhaps specify the number in the form design (or in
the data set for an automatically-generated form), or maybe specify a
longer period type and show all periods within the longer duration.

In this particular case there is but one data element and no
disaggregations, so it could go either way. It really depends on how you
get your data - sometimes you have lots of data for just one OrgUnit, and
then it's a hassle to constantly select new periods when the screen could
easily accommodate a matrix grid rather than a one dimensional column.

But of course you would have to somehow specify the number of periods,
preferably on a dataset basis rather than as a global setting. We already
support the choice of horizontal or vertical (row/column) multi-orgunit
data entry, so would not be too far fetched to do something similar for
periods (though they are potentially infinite in number). In fact, the
OpenHealth prototype that was developed for WHO back in 2007 had a data
entry interface quite akin to our Pivot Table.

Most of all I wonder what other use cases there might be for entry over
multiple time periods. Is this worth building in, or is it best done by an
 app?

I would argue that though our Data Entry is already quite powerful, there
are a lot of enhancements that I would really love to see in the core. It
would be wonderful if most use cases

Would at least be good if people got a message that the levels have not

probably should add a message that tells the user to click SAVE even if she
thinks the suggestions of Level1, Level2 are fine (i.e. they seem to
already exist, but don't...)

Have you populated those? See demo here:

Try that and run analytics again. You could also check the

This may be a red-herring/my misunderstanding but in the anyalitics_2014

I also tried with Sunday’s snapshot and still no luck

 Any suggestions?

I think that would still be a great feature to have, as it allows you to
compare two indicators for the same layer, one as polygons and one as
symbols. In the future, nvd3 could even allow small bar charts or pie
charts to show up in those centroids. Or icon based legends (icons based on
values), as we also had for a while?

Slight edit: Icons would be nice, but perhaps more usefil would be just
centroid circles with size according to the indicator value in each
district. But then we would also need a legend for size, not just color.

Re: [Dhis2-users] Can't add organisation unit levels in 2.14 build 13820

2014-03-18 Thread Knut Staring
This is true, but it is very important to actually label the levels, if you
don't go through this step a lot of things will not work ( you can keep the
default names level 1 etc if you want, but you have to open the page and
click save)

On Tue, Mar 18, 2014 at 7:41 PM, Ola Hodne Titlestad ol...@ifi.uio.nowrote:

 Hi Randy,

The levels are created based on the orgunit hierarchy in the database, and
 not the other way around.

So if you first create some orgunits in a hierarchy and then revisit that
page, you will see the levels listed.

The orgunit levels page is mainly to provide labels to the levels, and not
to create levels for the orgunit hierachy.

If it is blank then the database will regenerate it automatically when you

If you are preparing SQL for injection of the users and you want to
pregenerate them, you can use which ever tool you are using to generate the
SQL to provide you UUIDs as well. Postgresql's uuid-ossp package, R's
uuid package, or the system command uuid on Linux are all ways of
getting them. I am sure they can be done easily in Java or other languages.
So, it really depends on which tools you are using to prepare the SQL for
inserting them into the DHIS2 database.

[Dhis2-users] Language selection

2014-05-08 Thread Knut Staring
There is a nice language selector box on the DHIS2 login page, which
translates the login page to e.g. French (showing English if no translation
is available).

However, this selection does not seem to stick - after logging in I still
need to go to Settings and select Interface language?

Re: [Dhis2-users] [Dhis2-devs] Creation of bulk user.

2014-05-09 Thread Knut Staring
For Mysql, i think you could do this in postgres first, then do a
metadata export to mysql and finally use sql to bring over the generated
passwords.
On 9 May 2014 10:52, Kenneth Børtveit kenneth.bortv...@gmail.com wrote:

Alright. Are you using postgres? If not, this will not work.

 1.
Select the by pressing the select button.

 2.
In this case, the firstname and surname is in the csv file. Surname in the
first column, 0, and firstname in the second column, 1. Select the csv
radio button and the right column. Probably already selected.

 3.
The username can be made by a combination of the firstname and lastname,
then select split+count. If some are equal, numbers will be added.

 4.
The random password should just create a random password.
!This is not secure random, just a random string from java!

 5.
One needs to enter the right database connection parameters in order to
load user roles and orgunits. Or one can use organization unit id or code
from the database. The id can be found in the database, codes are usually
made manually in DHIS2. We used the codes from the csv file to assign
 orgunits, column 19.

 6. Enter the correct database parameters.

 7. Exclude incomplete users will not create users that are missing some of
 the information.

 8. Make csv of imported users, creates a csv file with the usernames and
 passwords.

 9. Make csv of incomplete records creates a csv file with the users that
 are missing data.

 10. The files can be found in the same directory as the selected file.

Let me know if there are any trouble.

Kenneth could you send Hannan a sample csv file (just 10 records or so)

If you are preparing SQL for injection of the users and you want to
pregenerate them, you can use which ever tool you are using to generate the
SQL to provide you UUIDs as well. Postgresql's uuid-ossp package, R's
uuid package, or the system command uuid on Linux are all ways of
getting them. I am sure they can be done easily in Java or other languages.
So, it really depends on which tools you are using to prepare the SQL for
inserting them into the DHIS2 database.

[Dhis2-users] User roles and user authorities

2014-05-28 Thread Knut Staring
Hello all,

The number of distinct authorities that can be granted to user roles is now
beyond 250. As it is often not very comfortable to browse through these in
the regular GUI, allow me to share them in a spreadsheet.

There has been discussion earlier that it could be good to have pre-defined
(of course adjustable) sets of user authorities.available, which I guess
could be done as metadata exports from the online demo.

Anyway, sharing this particular format in case it is useful for others.

Re: [Dhis2-users] Has anyone used DHIS2 for Animal Health

2014-06-18 Thread Knut Staring
Hello Gamal,

Do you have some example data or forms that we could refer to in answering
this question?
Off the top of my head, you could classify orgunits according to the animal
(OrgUnit type), though perhaps it would be better to have separate data
elements (e.g. Sheep vaccinated for X, vs Cows vaccinated for X).

For certain items, it could perhaps make sense to use the same data element
and separate in terms of categories, I am specifically thinking in terms of
the new partner setup that is available in 2.15.

But all of this really depends on a) what data you will collect and b) what
kinds of analysis you would like to perform.

 Yes,

One of the thing which is bit hard to fit in is the concept of location
and Organisation unit especially when we are talking about surveillance.
But this can also be done using option set and small script to populate the
 hierarchy of the location.

again its all depend on what we want to analyze than what we want to
 collect.

was a post on the DHIS2 user list a while back on different use cases. I
am reposting your question to the group to see if anyone has any experience
 in this area.

but it of course contains unique identifiers for that country which will

Re: [Dhis2-users] Sharing Pivot Table details between DHIS instances

2014-06-20 Thread Knut Staring
Hi Greg,

In DHIS2, the number of levels are deduced from the hierarchy, so there are
no fixed levels. It's quite feasible to add a new root node above the
national level (one could of course also think of regional nodes below the
global level, e.g. Africa, Europe etc).

If you mean that a multinational organization can set up a global
metadata repository with orgunits from all their countries, that is
certainly possible - it would in effect be using DHIS2 as a multinational
Master Facility Registry. DHIS2 could serve this function - and the same
global instance could also house all data element and indicator
definitions. This would then be a real metadata repository, in other words
a mechanism for sharing CONTENT which could even host HTML Standard Report
templates (though probably not yet shared and reusable
PT/Chart/GIS/Dashboard templates).

I guess we currently would require login, though there is usually little
reason such metadata could not be shared publicly for anyone on the
internet to access - in fact I think we really should technically
facilitate and even actively promote the sharing of metadata openly, for
the benefit of all. This is a crucial step towards the vision of OpenData
[0] (which of course is a much larger undertaking, and is much less
straightforward as it can involve sensitive data, in particular when you
move beyond aggregate figures).

More generally, there have been some efforts at the international level
(not involving DHIS2) towards establishing registries for health facilities
internationally, though I think few of them are very active. A challenge is
that it takes committment from each country to keep it up-to-date (though
crowd-sourcing efforts such as OpenStreetMap also seem to have quite a few
facilities). Technically, there should not be major challenges to setting
it up, and if DHIS2 were to be the platform it would certainly be easy to
link with national DHIS2 instances. We have also already linked DHIS2 to
other systems such as the Kenyan Master Health Facility List [1] and the
Rwanda Health Facility Registry [2]. DHIS2 has also implemented the FRED
API [3], which is meant to facilitate such interoperability.

If multiple countries were to be integrated into one instance it would
require all existing OUlevels to be incremented unless level zero could be
accommodated with some dynamic settings for different 'branches' (assuming
all country instances share a common and proportionate number of vertical
 levels).
The other option is going a much more sophisticated route and virtualizing
a DHIS2 instance from multiple 'live' instances but that would be a whole
new kind of approach - probably unnecessarily complex ...

  Hi all,

here comes a quick update and preview of version 2.16. We plan to
release in the first weeks on July. The major features being included:

  - Event visualizer: New app for visualizations / charts of aggregated
 event data.

  Preview
 https://apps.dhis2.org/dev/dhis-web-event-visualizer/app/index.html

  - Tracker capture: New app for tracking, intended to replace the current
individual records module in 2.17. For 2.16 it will support search for
tracked entities and dashboard with widgets for enrollment, data capture,
current selections, profile, relationships and notes (at least).

  Preview https://apps.dhis2.org/dev/dhis-web-tracker-capture/index.html

  - Web API: Improved meta-data support. The API will support meta-data
field filtering, allowing the consumer to explicitly define which fields
should be included on objects when retrieving meta-data. The tracker
related objects like programs and events will be fully supported in the API
including the possibility for creating and updating objects.

 Docs https://www.dhis2.org/doc/snapshot/en/user/html/ch30s08.html

 - Calendar: Support for an array of eight calendars including nepal,
 coptic, julian.

  Preview
 https://apps.dhis2.org/dev/dhis-web-maintenance-settings/systemCalendarSettings.action

  - Data value one-way sync: Support for automatically sending data from a
semi-offline DHIS instance to another central, online DHIS instance.

  - Event analytics: Support for data element aggregation operators in the
event analytics api and event reports app, allowing for sum, average,
 count, etc aggregation of events.

There is a range of smaller features planned for 2.16 which you can find
 on Launchpad here https://launchpad.net/dhis2/+milestone/2.16.

Re: [Dhis2-users] Problem retrieving raw data

2014-07-13 Thread Knut Staring
Yes, probably. I used curl as installed with the usually excellent Gow tool
for Windows:
https://github.com/bmatzelle/gow

We should probably change 2012 to 2013 in the manual (and then 2014 in a
few months...)

Also, some may find it more intuitive to have a look in directly in the
browser first by adding .json:
https://apps.dhis2.org/demo/api/dataValueSets.json?dataSet=pBOMPrpg1QXperiod=201301orgUnit=DiszpKrYNg8

https://apps.dhis2.org/demo/api/dataValueSets.json?dataSet=pBOMPrpg1QXdataSet=BfMAe6ItzgtstartDate=2013-01-01endDate=2013-01-31orgUnit=YuQRtpLP10IorgUnit=vWbkYPRmKySchildren=true

A shortcut to making an app would be if we exposed .json by default instead
of XML:

https://apps.dhis2.org/dev/api/resources.json has nicely clickable links if
the user has something like JSONView installed:

[Dhis2-users] How to do add an arbitrary number of different training campaigns?

In the context of an aggregate reporting form, they want to also report
which types of trainings have been conducted in the last month - chosen
from a list of 150 types. In my mind, this is a bit like line listing with

Is there a way to do this in an aggregate form?

Re: [Dhis2-users] Dataset Section

2014-07-22 Thread Knut Staring
Related to this, we have a big form where most sections are very simple
and broken down only by gender, but one is also broken down by A LOT of age
groupings, so the auto-generated form becomes extremely wide and the users
have to scroll a lot horizontally. This also means it is very easy for them
to lose track of where they are, though of course they do have the little
box in the upper right corner which is meant to help with exactly those
cases.

So, in general we are very happy with the autogenerated form (and it is
huge, with 10 sections), but would like to be able to customize the layout
for this particular section (actually, the IDEAL option would be to be able
to specify the width of the cells - as we could well have cells only a
third of the automatic width).

I suppose the best solution for now is to separate out this particular
section into a separate form, but are we planning to support custom forms
for sections?

[Dhis2-users] Problem with dataset assignment

2014-07-24 Thread Knut Staring
In my 2.15 db my existing forms show up in data entry for all OUs even
though I've tried to restrict them to just level 4 (they had previously
been assigned to all OUs by mistake). The restriction/assignment works for
new datasets, but not for the existing ones.

How can make sure the exisiting forms only show up for the OUs in the
datasetsource table?

Re: [Dhis2-users] Dataset Section

2014-07-24 Thread Knut Staring
Thanks Kader,

I was thinking there would be a more elegant method than to insert a style
for each of the 24x20 cells, but your suggestion works well with a simple
search/replace of input in Notepad++ (no need for an HTML editor).

I would also love to get rid of the excessive padding to the left and right
of the input field in the cell.

And of course it would be nice to not have to manually insert the 240 data
bindings, so would very much welcome the realization of Lars' thoughts on
making the auto-generated form available as a starting point for the
customization.

For the cell width, I add a _style_ attribute in the input tag. This is
 one example:

 input *style=width:4em;text-align:center*
  id=TCTY9boIn41-j5CfAgw1uth-val title=TCTY9boIn41 -xxx value=xxx /

You can adapt the size with the width attribute (here 4em, but could be
more or even less, depending on how you want to manage the inputs)

they are in the right hand columns.

to lose track of where they are, though of course they do have the little

So, in general we are very happy with the autogenerated form (and it is
huge, with 10 sections), but would like to be able to customize the layout
for this particular section (actually, the IDEAL option would be to be able
to specify the width of the cells - as we could well have cells only a
 third of the automatic width).

I suppose the best solution for now is to separate out this particular
section into a separate form, but are we planning to support custom forms
 for sections?

Since spreadsheet-like grids are really common (occur pretty much whenever

 #form-table td {

Adding cellspadding style in the td tags (td style=cellpadding:0px

Do you think developers can have a look at it more closely? It could be

Re: [Dhis2-users] Problem with dataset assignment

2014-07-25 Thread Knut Staring
Thanks, I actually had tried that with no effect - but by sheer
coincindence, I discovered what was the matter today:

I was going to change the icon for an OU group, and noticed that the forms
I wanted to get rid of had been assigned to several OU groups (one of which
contained most of the OUs in the system). So this functionality is
independent of and overriding the dataset assignment - and the result can
be very confusing (I spent at least a day trying to fix this issue in the
db via other means).

Glad to have finally resolved the issue - but also have a similar issue
with sharing: Everything (e.g. maps and PT favorites) are accessible to
everyone even though I try to restrict to certain user groups.

Re: [Dhis2-users] Fwd: Upgrade of Customize war file

2014-07-31 Thread Knut Staring
Hi Gerald,
I agree with Bob that upgrading version by version should be the safest
(though quite tedious) way.

However, it might be worth thinking through what data is actually on this
server and perhaps consider alternative ways of bringing the data (and
metadata) over to a 2.16 instance, either through exports or directly in
the database.

Probably you are quite familiar with the data (how much, what kind)?
Maintenance - Data Statistics should give you an oveview of the amounts of
data and metadata.

On 7/29/14, Bob Jolliffe bobjolli...@gmail.com wrote:
  Hi Gerald

Is this the server in the national office or one of the district servers
(you can respond to me off list)? My understanding is that Romain
 already
went through the process of upgrading the old national database on the
linode. So what you are taking about now is something different to what
  has already been done?

Anyway, the very first task would be to get a backup dump of the postgres
database which is running on the standalone machine and the customised
 dhis
2.5 war file. Then if you are deploying on a cloud server you might want
to start by just replicating exactly what is there ie.

  1. create a dhis instance (using the dhis2-tools package)
  2. restore the backup database to the dhis instance database
  3. deploy the old war file which you have from the standalone. (you can
use the -f option of dhis2-deploy-war for this).

From here you should verify that you have an exact replica running on the
linode of what you had before on the standalone.

Upgrading to later dhis2 versions is generally best done incrementally
 (of
course from 2.5 to 2.15 is a long way to go). But you are likely to get
the best results by working through 2.6, 2.7, 2.8 ... etc. Doing this on
the linode with dhis2-deploy-war should be reasonably painless, with each
increment taking no more than a few minutes.

Before setting forth on this exercise it is also probably worthwhile to
 try
and fix any inconsistencies and metadata integrity issues that might
 exist
in the old database. Getting rid of things like orphaned categoryoptions
and the like at this stage might prevent issues arising as you attempt to
  upgrade.

  One big caveat ...

I am a bit nervous to read that you have a customised war file.
  Naturally
these customisations will not be present in later stock versions of dhis
that you upgrade to. What you will need to do depends entirely on what
 the
customisations are. Can you give some more info on how the war is
  customised (and maybe by who)?

  Regards
  Bob

export is done but the download never gets completed – just goes on for
hours. I do not know if this is related to OU size (more than 30,000
units). Any experience or suggestion on this?

Re: [Dhis2-users] Quick way to add missing ISO weeks going back to 2011?

We do have a specific version of 2.14 which accommodates weeks starting on

@Randy, simply adding a new period type to the periottype table will not
work. There is a lot of code behind each period , so if the particular
period which you have is not implemented, then it will have to be
implemented in Java. Morten has done a lot of work on this lately but this
period type is not there yet I think.

I am pretty sure this issue has been discussed before on the list, of so
called Epi weeks. There have also been requests for other weeks, starting
on Wednesday as well. As of now, there is no solution for this.

See the error message below. - it seems like my periodtype is unknown to
the javascripts that run during startup.

Now that we are migrating our disease surveillance system to DHIS-2 we
are going to need the epidemiological weeks - and I've got 3 years of
Sunday to Saturday data to import. *Ismail, I guess we need to put this
into our generic requirements for IDSR- it will have an impact on quite a
few things including import/export which looks for ISO dates.*

I suppose I can pretend they are the same for the import process and then
work out a way to change later. The main issue is that the period selector
in data entry displays the Week number as well as the start and end dates,
 otherwise users would never notice.

 other use?
 2. Its very easy to create duplicate periods which is not nice.
Probably we should consider placing a uniqueness constraint on

To answer my own question, different versions of dhis have treated these
issues differently. So you'd want to be a little careful depending on the
 dhis version used.

Here is an R script which I have used in the past. It is very basic

creates a lot of INSERT statements. You will get errors for those which
already exist. It would be fairly easy to do this, but would require

 exist.

Use at your own peril and hopefully Bob has something better.

knows best).

2- I don’t think “last 24 months” will be a perfect solution because

Please note that if this option can be applied to the “Quarterly” level,

A minor note, if you want data dynamically starting at month x, then is a

Wouldn't it rather be months since x ?

What if we simply made a new relative period last 24 months, would that

I have a requirement that I need to show monthly data for more than 12
months backwards. For example, I need to dynamically show data starting at
month X year Y up till the current reporting month. Is there a possibility
that we can have an option like “Last X months” and specify the value of
 X.?

I think this is very important feature to have because it allows us to
show relative data that spans more than 12 month of time in a single report.

At our organization, we have data based on projects spanning more than a
year, so if we want to show an indicator history over the time of the
project, we need to show the data from the start of the project up till
 current month.

 Hi Knut,

Please find the attached log file. You can find the error in the last
 line of the file.

It seems it is occurring while generating the “_dateperiodstructure”
 table.

Actually, I don’t have any data in 1975. However, when I added the org
units to the system, I set the opening date to an arbitrary date of
01/01/1970 for all org units. I don’t know if this is related to the
 problem.

To check this, I changed the opening dates to “01/01/2013” and the
 problem still exists.

Actually, as I previously indicated, the error is appearing on a clean
database without adding anything to it.

 Note: I am using v 2.16 rev. 16320 .

 I hope this helps.

Assignment through orgunit groups «override» whatever other assignments
you have made. So I think if you remove the dataset from that group, things
will return to normal. Then you can use the group instead in the regular
«data set assignment» page to assign the dataset to the group members.

This behaviour is a bit strange in my opinion, as I think most people will
assume that if they assign something through a group AND manually, the
orgunit will have access all those datasets.

[Dhis2-users] Category combinations with three categories

DHIS2 certainly supports more than two categories. Maybe give us a few more
details, and define what you mean by ignored.

You have to run the FWTools shell, not your ordinary command window.

Once you have opened that, just go to c:\Simplification:

 cd
 cd Simplification

Rremove the previously generated file:

rm Communes.gml

Now try again:

 ogr2ogr -f GML Communes.gml Communes.shp

Does it have to be exactly that build?

You can get the 2.15 war file from the following link. Then go into your
dhis-live webapps folder and further into the dhis folder. Go inside,
delete everything, place the downloaded war file there and unzip.

Re: [Dhis2-users] Migrating from PostgreSQL to MySQL

2014-10-05 Thread Knut Staring
Guy,

I think you could try just doing metadata and data exports from the
Postgres instance, and then start DHIS2 with an empty MySql database. Then
import the exports. You may have to do some adjustments, but most of it
should work like that - no need for special tools.

 Hi,

we have a new app available in the app store
 https://www.dhis2.org/appstore: Tabular Tracker Capture.

Tabular Tracker Capture is an app that makes you more effective and
productive when capturing lots of persons and event information. It lets
you register new persons and other entities, do enrollment in programs and
enter event or case information in the same screen. You can easily navigate
between organisation units, time periods and enrollment status.

Get it from the app store https://www.dhis2.org/appstore. Try it out on
the demo https://apps.dhis2.org/demo. See a screenshot
 http://folk.uio.no/larshelg/images/tabular-capture.png.

This app was developer by James Chang and contributed by PSI
 http://www.psi.org/.

We are happy that PSI made the effort to make the app generic and
reusable, hence making it available for others to use on their own DHIS
instance. We encourage you to check it out.

 best regards,

 Lars

Re: [Dhis2-users] GIS shapefiles integration / info about names of feature members

On Sat, Oct 11, 2014 at 8:53 AM, dut...@wpro.who.int wrote:

  Sorry Knut,

I think you’ve lost me a bit here.

Yes, I know I did not provide a full reply (was on my phone). I also saw
there was a new commit to Trunk yesterday which rewrote the GML import -
not sure if that provides any more flexibility to select number of
decimals, which has been set to 4, but you want something less accurate but
faster. 4 means roughly 10m accuracy, 2 would mean 1 KM accuracy:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7167604/how-accurately-should-i-store-latitude-and-longitude

If you want to change the 4 to 2, you actually have to stop Tomcat and
go into your tomcat\webapps\dhis\WEB-INF\lib\ folder.

In there, you will find the library dhis-service-importexport-2.16.jar

If you unzip that into a new subfolder, you will find that it contains a
folder called transform, which again contains the file gml2dxf.xsl

Open that in Notepad++ or similar, and line 7 is like this:
xsl:param name=decimalPlaces4/xsl:param

Change the number and rezip all the CONTENT of the
dhis-service-importexport-2.16 folder (not the folder itself). Rename it
to .jar and replace the old dhis-service-importexport-2.16.jar file. Start
Tomcat and ready to import...

I did end up importing the co-ordinates into an offline copy of the DB
just to see how its working (seems like the files etc are OK at least). Is
either method preferable over the other?

I say go with what works for you - hoping though that Sushil's app would
assist people - but there are many aspects to this, including matching
hierarchies created from Excel files with names in Shape files. Perhaps
Sushil could also add functionality for selecting the number of decimals.

Also, on the offline copy of the DB I upgraded to stable 2.16 to see
how things would work. When I run the facility layer in the GIS, I no
longer get the symbol images I had selected for the org unit group, just
 broken image files like so:

When I check the org unit group, they are still assigned to the correct
 symbol. Any ideas?

The standard response is always to check your caching - BUT it seems the
same is happening on https://apps.dhis2.org/demo/, so this looks like a
bug. Please report it on Launchpad
