Re: [DDN] Hurrah to the three people volunteering to moderate

2009-02-25 Thread Charlie Meisch

Jayne, you've reminded me that we probably don't need to rely on a single
moderator. In the past when I've guest moderated there would be times when
both Andy and I would have authorization and that just meant double the chance
that a post would be approved quickly. And if we spread moderators evenly
around our global membership we can always have posts approved in real time.
What say DDN?

Fouad Bajwa, Andy Swarbrik and Molly Uzoh are all volunteering to
moderate the DDN. Nothing says yes, I want this group to continue like
people willing to step up to the plate and take on responsibilities to
make it happen. Not sure who makes the decision, but I just wanted to
 say -- hurrah.

I'd like to suggest no switching of the DDN platform for now, that we
focus just on getting this group regularly moderated and, if that works
out for a while, *then* a discussion happen about possibly moving the
 platform.

Is there a full written description of the role of the DDN moderator, so
that these three, and any others, could know exactly what it is they are
volunteering to do? I would be happy to share some sample descriptions
 if that would help.

[DDN] 2009 Inaugural Coverage on PBS to be Described and Captioned Live

2009-02-25 Thread Mary Watkins
January 16, 2009

Press Contact:
Mary Watkins
617 300-3700
mary_watk...@wgbh.org

Media Access Group at WGBH To Provide Closed Captioning And Live Description
for PBS's Inaugural Coverage

Described version of coverage will also stream live on the Joint Congressional
Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) web site,
http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/

Boston, MA - The Media Access Group at WGBH, a non-profit service of the WGBH
Educational Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts, will provide both closed
captioning and live description of Barack Obama's presidential inauguration for
the PBS presentation of Inauguration 2009, a NewsHour special hosted by Jim
Lehrer. The PBS coverage of the inauguration airs live on Tuesday, January 20
from 11AM to 1:30PM EST. While live captioning is an established feature of
many television broadcasts, live description, the creation at time of air of a
narration track imparting information about visual elements that people who are
blind or visually impaired would miss, is a rare service. Dunkin' Donuts is
generously sponsoring the description service for this broadcast. In 1993,
PBS's coverage of the Clinton inauguration was the first live television
program that was made fully accessible to the nation's 36 million deaf,
hard-of-hearing, blind and visually impaired viewers.

While details from the inaugural planning committee are still forthcoming, PBS
plans to include coverage of Barack Obama's arrival at the White House,
excerpts of the church service and Barack Obama's speech to the nation from the
Capitol steps.

Hosted by Jim Lehrer of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, the PBS presentation will
feature political analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks, as well as a panel to
provide historical context:

* Ellen Fitzpatrick, presidential historian and professor at the University of
New Hampshire
* Peniel Joseph, professor of history and African-American studies at Brandeis
University
* Richard Brookhiser, senior editor at National Review and author of a series
of biographies of America's founders, including Alexander Hamilton and George
Washington

WGBH is proud to take part in making this historic event fully accessible to
all PBS viewers once again, says Media Access Group director Larry Goldberg.
And we're extremely grateful to PBS, the team at MacNeil/Lehrer Productions
and to corporate sponsor of the live description Dunkin' Donuts for the
opportunity to bring not only the audio of the inaugural coverage to deaf and
hard-of-hearing Americans, but also the visual highlights of the occasion to
those who are blind or visually impaired.

Dunkin' Donuts, for many years a corporate caption sponsor of local news
broadcasts in the Boston area, is sponsoring description for the first time.
Shannon Maxwell, field marketing manager for Dunkin' Donuts says, Dunkin'
Donuts individual franchise owners are proud to play a part of making this
major event accessible to blind and visually impaired audiences. We are
thrilled that our contribution will make the images of the day come alive via
description.

Closed captions display spoken dialogue as text on the television screen. The
live captions will be typed by specially trained stenocaptioners - working from
WGBH's Boston-based headquarters - and broadcast simultaneously with the live
program. The descriptive narration - provided by an expert team of describers
- will be audible during pauses in program dialogue and will identify speakers,
describe settings and convey other visual information about the event. Captions
can be accessed on televisions equipped with built-in decoders (most
televisions are equipped), while viewers can hear descriptions by switching to
the Second Audio Program (SAP) channel on their stereo TVs. The described
coverage will also be streamed live on the Joint Congressional Committee on
Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) web site at http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/

The Media Access Group at WGBH incorporates The Caption Center, the world's
first captioning agency, founded in 1972; Descriptive Video Service® (DVS®),
which has made television, film and video more accessible to blind and visually
impaired audiences since 1990; and the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National
Center for Accessible Media (NCAM), a research and development entity that
builds on the success of WGBH's access service departments to make existing and
emerging technologies more accessible to these under-served audiences. Members
of the Media Access Group's collective staff represent the leading resources
and experts in their fields.

Re: [DDN] why not googlegroups - Re: The future of DDN

2009-02-25 Thread Andy Swarbrick
Steven,

You are right about only taking across 25% as a guesstimate. Also it
can split the group as one tries to leave the old group running and
then it somehow has its own momentum (with perhaps the remaining 75%).

Also anyone taking on board social networking would do well to
understand the whys and wherefores of that process. As someone who is
a user on many if not almost all major social sites I would not wish
to impose that on this group, even though it has great possibilities.

I see one role of DDN as a gateway for people to come on board to the
21st Internet age. That means de facto it must be at least inclusive
- and inclusiveness is is the definition of email-drive group
discussion. As such it supports people on poor internet connections
also it is extremely well understood by all reveling its
ubiquitessness.

Social sites on the other hand add functionality that can at least
confuse novices and so their strength may also be their weakness.
Another weakness of many existing social sites they tend to focus on
an all-inclusive all-powerful all-embracing solutions.

Ning is quite good in this way of enabling groups to run with cut down
facilities, unfortunately I am yet to be convinced about Ning's email
support since like most social sites what they really want is people
logged onto their servers. (By constrast Grouply is one service that
allows a total email service for those who wish it.)

My recommended way forward towards social networking is for people to
be able to add in bits as they gain confidence. Especially focussing
on inclusive technologies. Foremost I would argue twitter (and its
like) is a great social device for DDN enthusiasts. It has a simple
interface, is very socially inclusive (including support for even
those who do not have direct access to the web!!) That's one way
forward.

Cheers,

Steve,

How about having the 30,000 Community Infrastructure Builders work with
2000 Community Connector Town Halls (or intelligent and early warning
system Building Blocks in each in an area of about 150,000, or about 4
1/2 per Congressional District which average 675,000) hosted at a
familiar local community center, hospital, college or other place
persons go to all 4 seasons of the year?

One of the tasks for Community Infrastructure Builders would be to help
translate the Stimulus Infrastructure spending and tax cut proposals,
the TARP housing security/local credit/foreclosure prevention and
Health/Safety Homeland Security investments -- which Obama and Congress
have said will be posted Online nationally for a week before Congress
votes -- and in scenarios of potential local impacts on Lives of
families and communities, as backdrop for local
vision/trade-off/cooperation/monitoring discussions across so many kinds
of financial and people mobilization activities.

Then, the Builders can help host, develop digital presentation materials
for, and expand community participation in
citizen-business-education-health-public official Transparent Town Halls
(e.g. America Speaks and InternetForAll-like models), which would have
responsibility to use keypad polling for Digital Quality of Life Report
to the President (and American People) which could become a Weekly
Online Report (or Health/Safety/Opportunity/Resourcefulness Quality of
Life indicators, or so-called Community Life SCAN). Such a Weekly (NOT
MONTHLY) Online Quality of Life Report could be a helpful press-worthy
discussion point, locally, in states and regions and nationally, as a
Near Real Time open source health-and-enterprise-sustaining tool, with
credibility and basis for action by individuals, families, businesses,
institutions and public agencies.

See below notes on Digital Illinois as one state model for Obama
Innovation, Technology and Transparent Government Reform agenda,

wireless infrastructure build-out along with urban and rural medical IT

Stay tuned for postings in February at www.illinoisclicks.org via

Illinois to Launch Rural and Urban Broadband

State of the Art Health Services With $5Million in State Funding

On January 13, the Illinois General Assembly adopted legislation to
allocate $5 million in currently unused funds to unlock $21 million in
FCC-awarded Illinois Rural HealthNet project funding, plus launch
patient electronic medical records programs across Illinois. The
legislation, which will be effective immediately upon completion of
enactment, is an important step toward making Illinois a Digital Age and
Digital Government state.

Under SB 1132 (Search www.ilga.gov) $2 million is allocated to Illinois
Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for IRHN, led by
Northern Illinois University, to trigger the December 2007 FCC award to
link rural hospitals and clinic with fiber and wireless infrastructure
in a 3 year plan. Www.irhn.org $3 million is provided to Illinois
Department of Healthcare and Family Services for model Medical IT
projects in 15 DHFS urban and rural regions across the state.

These world-class investments were supported by a cross-section of
community, business, health and public sector leaders in General
Assembly, in administrative agencies and among supply and demand side
parties in Illinois Broadband Deployment Council. They reinforce
another $4 million in DCEO RFP for high speed Internet extension in
rural and urban areas for economic development, education, public
services and health needs. This project is designed to begin mid-2009,
and parallels City of Chicago Digital Excellence investments in 3 year
projects in Pilsen, North Lawndale and Auburn Gresham/Englewood begun in
2009.

The $5 million health communication infrastructure investment was the
top priority arising from the July 2008 Digital Government hearing of

[DDN] Online Charitable Giving Study

2009-02-25 Thread Diane Faure
Hello everyone!
As part of my Master's thesis at USC Annenberg School for Communication, I
am conducting a study on the way a nonprofit organization's website design
influences donor behavior.

If you have made an online donation to any kind of nonprofit in the past,
then please share your experience by participating to this short survey:

http://usc.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_3CR4Qf8cZTzUhXSSVID=Prod

All responses are anonymous, and the survey's closing date is March 3, 2009.

I'd be happy to send a summary of the study's results to those who request
it.

Many thanks!!

Re: [DDN] Senegal

2009-02-25 Thread Ed Gragert
Hello Karen,

iEARN has a good program in Senegal, involving primary and secondary
schools in Dakar and beyond. iEARN held its annual international
conference there in 2005. They do workshops on how to integrate ICTs
in education. They also are coordinating a student exchange program
that sends high school students to the US for a year and all of these
students are actively engaged online in collaborative project work.

Feel free to contact our Co-Coordinators:

  Aminata Kole - kolef...@hotmail.com

Let me know if you need any help.

Do any of you do work in Senegal? We are in the early stages of

foe entrepreneurs. I want to find a partner already working there
 for guidance.

 hi digital divide network community,

for those of you who like fun logic puzzles, some commercial apple
 II
educational software i designed in 1989 can now be played online in
 your web
browser. i've even played these on my ubuntu linux computer after i
 installed
 java onto that computer.

i designed these puzzles for 3rd and 4th graders, but i've seen
 children as
young as three years old enjoy them. some older students enjoy them,
 too.

when this software was evaluated by teachers in the iowa city
 community
school district, the evaluators rated this software 5 out of 5.

these puzzles are mostly self explanatory, but you might benefit
 from
watching this quicktime screencast i created.

thanks for passing along word about these puzzles to youth or
 adults you
know who would enjoy playing them.

 that has Java

yes, it's quite something seeing one's creative work from 20 years
 ago come
alive again in a web browser. it's like revisiting a favorite friend
 that you
 haven't seen in many years.
