[DDN] teaching generalized computer skills

2004-11-07 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi everyone -

yesterday i stopped by to visit deb roepke, the founder of Computer
C.O.R.E. in alexandria, virginia. in giving me a tour of her
community technology center, she explained to me Computer C.O.R.E.'s
philosphy of teaching students specific computer skills as well as
general skills of how to use any computer program.

i've heard others speak highly of Computer C.O.R.E., but it was quite
another thing to see this organization up close myself. i'm
convinced that Computer C.O.R.E's model is a very effective teaching
model. i wish that i were introduced to computers in this way.

here's a brief quicktime with deb explaining her organization's
approach.

i used the appleworks draw module, a digital camera and quicktime pro to
create this. the audio was recorded with a camcorder and a lavalier (clip
on) microphone.

you could create something similar on windows using
http://www.powerbullet.com

i'm archiving various web multimedia projects i'm working on at
http://mytvstation.blogspot.com

there's a link to this quicktime over there, too.

if you have a blog and feel the above quicktime is worth linking to, you
might choose to create a blog entry linking to this quicktime. social
fabric is woven one blog link at a time.

Asunto: [DDN] DD projects in Yucatan?

My name is Chris Ward. I am a university student at the College of the
Atlantic in Bar Harbor Maine, studying for a degree in Human Ecology.

This coming winter, December 7th-March 7th, i will be studying in the
Yucatan.
For two weeks while i am there, i am required to do a project of my choice.
The only two requirements are that it must be in a spanish speaking
environment (not hard...) and that it lasts two weeks.

I am very interested in studying about technology in developing countries,
and the digital divide issues are a great place to start.

Do you know of any projects that are centered in or around Yucatan, in
Mexico, that addresses this topic or any others in technology?

I will be volunteering my time and skills. I have professional experience
with technology, as well as some experience teaching technical skills to
students in a developing country, namely , Ghana.

I also have a great interest in Linux deployment, advocacy, education. If
there are any known projects that relate to linux in one of those ways, or
if anyone is researching how linux fits into the DD problem, i am very
interested to learn more about those things as well.

Please let me know if you know of anything, or even if you do not. And,
please also forward my question to as many people as you can who might be
able to help me also.

Thank you so very much!

-Chris Ward
