I did an entry on this (as well as Caribbean Telecom yesterday) - an
interesting discussion ensued:

One of the things of interest is also OpenWengo, as mentioned by

Google Also Announced that anyone can get a gmail account now. the setup
is weird because they send the invite to your cell phone.

https://www.google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1

I think it's kind of an innovative way to keep spammers out but I am
sure they will still get gmail address soon. Also you can find other
clients that google talk will work with on different platforms

To be more precise, they have a PC-only client, and in fact if I recall
rightly, it's *Windows*-only. However, they're using a Jabber server,
and you have a choice of Jabber clients. See http://www.jabber.org for
details. Having said that, I should also add that I've read posts from
at least two people on our local LUG trying Gaim to connect to Google's
IM server and getting grief. Theory is that Google's Jabber setup still
has a few rough edges.

don't forget that you actually need a gmail account (free email
account with google) to make it work, windows, mac or unix..

They've got a table for connecting via other clients -

I guess the rough edges are why we're testing it to work the bugs out for them.
