[digitalradio] Windows fonts under Linux
I found a simple answer to pretty fonts when using Wine. Just go to here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/, download all fonts ending in .exe, and run the .exe files with Wine. Installation is automatic, and DigiPan looks beautiful now! 73, Skip KH6TY The K3UK DIGITAL MODES SPOTTING CLUSTER AT telnet://208.15.25.196/ Yahoo! Re: [digitalradio] Re: Hamshack Hack v.05 available at SourceForge
Hi Skip ... Only thing I can think of for the fonts problem might be to download the "MSTruetype" fonts package for Linux and install those. You end up with useable "Comic Sans" and a bunch of other stuff. Then, point WINE at that package, if possible or tell your program where those fonts hide out. I think I got those fonts as part of a CUPS update ... i ain't too sure. Look for a .deb file maybe. I'm a "bitstream vera sans" fan ... it always seems to size up nicely and the anti-aliasing always seems to work with it. Sure will be neat to run DigiPan without installing the "other OS" :-) 73 Harv On Apr 1, 2005 7:14 AM, Skip Teller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > Try running "alsaconf" from the icon on the desktop ... its labled > > "Run me first". One other application that would be helpful would be X Chat for the IRC. On FreeNode server there are channels for most "flavors" of Linux as well as a ham radio channel. Have received some "newbie" help on #hamradio on Linux applications. To use X Chat, find the FreeNode server, create a "nick" or user name, then in the text entry line type "/join #hamradio" or "/join #knoppix", with out quotes of course then the "Enter" key. This will bring up the channel or chat room for the channel you join. All channel names are proceeded by the "#" sign. 73, Jerry K0HZI The K3UK DIGITAL MODES SPOTTING CLUSTER AT telnet://208.15.25.196/ Yahoo! I have not tried 777, but I seem to remember it will do the same thing. For those who do not know how to do this, you have to click on the panel icon that looks like a tiny blank DOS screen with the C> prompt and then type su and press Enter. This makes you a "SuperUser", or system administrator, so you have the power to change permissions. Then you type chmod 777 /dev/ttyS0 or chmod 777 /dev/ttyS1 and press Enter. > Make sure you are doing a image CD burn plus the file name is correct, it > should read hamshack-05.iso without an added extension that my download had which was *.iso.htm Had to use dos to rename it. > > Ron W4LDE I got bitten by the same problem when I installed an upgrade to Nero for CD Burning. Be sure you navigate as necessary to burn a "bootable" CD from the ISO, and don't create only a "data disk" into which you just burn a carbon copy of the ISO you downloaded. Now, does anyone know how the screenshots at Wine HQ (www.winehq.org) show pretty fonts for the Caption Bars and Menus? I am trying to run DigiPan 2.0 under Wine (to get the multichannel display until Tomi puts it into gMFSK), and it works, somewhat, but Linux apparently does not know what font to use, and creates an ugly, italicised, bolded, fake of the Windows font. Windows does the same thing if it cannot find a font of the exact name it needs). I tried converting the Windows 3.1 system fonts to Linux fonts, but I must be using the wrong names somehow, as Linux still does not use them. BTW, Harv, I had to apt-get Wine and MC (Midnight Commander), since they are not on the CD. I also had to retrieve the font converter binary, fnt2bdf, from the KNOPPIX 3.3 CD, as that is not on the latest KNOPPIX CD's either! Midnight Commander is a Linux clone of the popular old DOS Norton Commander, which provides an easy way to navigate directories and files, and even edit them. This is much easier for a Linux newbie like me to use than EMACS, or JOE, or NANO, because there are no commands to have to remember. MC is a tiny program, which should easily fit on your CD. 73, Skip KH6TY The K3UK DIGITAL MODES SPOTTING CLUSTER AT telnet://208.15.25.196/ Yahoo!
