[digitalradio] Newbie

2005-11-08 Thread José Pedro Alvarez
Hello all,

In a few days I will be trying the sound card digital modes in HF
for first time. I will be using a old but reliable TS-430 with a
home made interface along a G5RV antenna. Currently, I hold
transmit privileges in the 80, 40 and 10 meter bands.

I would appreciate if someone could point me to a FAQ, document or
website that can help a newbie setup a new digital station and make
a few contacts to start climbing the first step in the digital radio
knowledge ladder.

I would specially appreciate information on frequencies and modes to
start looking for activity.

Thanks,

Jose Pedro

[digitalradio] Re: HF packet to internet & SCAMP questions

2005-11-08 Thread jimkovar
Rick / Tim / Ralph,
Here are some links that might be worth checking out:

http://www.qsl.net/kb2scs/bwrie.html

If you are simply interested in sending/retrieving email over HF or
VHF packet, then BWRIE (freeware) may be a solution. Also, the author
of BWRIE has a new project, APRS-SCS (shareware) that is being
supported on the aprpack Yahoo group. Plans are to add pskmail
capability to APRS-SCS.

http://www.elcom.gr/sv2agw/

There is a shareware Ax.25 driver for freeware AGWPE. Shareware AGWPE
Pro includes the driver. The soundcard driver in AGWPE and AGWPE Pro
supports 300, 1200 or 9600 baud packet, or you can use a KISS mode TNC.

http://www.mixw.net/related.htm

At the bottom of the page are freeware MixNic6 drivers for TCP/IP over
Ax.25, and a freeware Ax25Inet program to use these drivers with a
KISS TNC. If you are using VHF, you can also use MixW (shareware) as
a packet soundmodem.

http://www.qsl.net/yb0kli/klinet/

An alternative solution to TCP/IP over Ax.25, KLInet (freeware) is
designed to replace IP addresses with the Ax.25 addresses
(callsigns+SSID) at the remote end, and map them back to IP addresses
at the network gateway end. This uses less overhead than
encapsulating the TCP/IP frame in AX.25, but requires that both
parties can use static IPs (like the 44.xxx.xxx.xxx domain addresses
assigned by AMPR).

With all the above options, if you don't want to count on an internet
link to an email server, you will need a local email server for at
least one station in the local traffic network. As Rick mentioned, it
looks like JNOS2 or a Winlink PMBO would provide this capability.

Regarding the 30 minute per day connection limit, I believe that this
limit is set by each PMBO or BBS operator. Back in the days of dialup
BBSs, it was common for the operators to set time limits so each user
could get a fair share of connect time. Per discussions on the
wl2kemcomm Yahoo group, it sounds like PMBO operators were able to
grant unlimited time to stations providing support for hurricane
relief efforts.

[digitalradio] JA mag-loop and Olivia

2005-11-08 Thread KT2Q

All:

Had a nice 20m Olivia mode QSO with Hanawa,
7N4CDJ. He said he was running 40 watts to a 4 foot diameter magnetic loop made
out of 2 inch copper pipe. See QSO text below.

Anyone have experience working HF with small
magnetic loops? Was wondering how they compare with say a dipole in
terms of radiation efficiency? Seems like it would make for a nice
compact portable antenna.

[digitalradio] Transferring PSK software to another computer

2005-11-08 Thread Mel
Hello everyone,

I downloaded some PSK software into this computer a few years ago and
I would like to transfer the unused items, not now available, into
another computer.

Can this be done, is this done by using diskettes ? If not, can
someone explain the procedure please ? PS. I'd rather not buy a
special cable connector just for this job.

Kind regards, 73, Mel G0GQK

Re: [digitalradio] Transferring PSK software to another computer

2005-11-08 Thread Harv Nelson

Hi Mel,

Many of us here stand ready to help ... but please!, NO SECRETS!

You must tell us what sort of computer you are using ... what sort of
operating system ... Windows? Linux? Apple?  BSD? Commodore?
What ...?  Else, you'll be getting some fairly useless information
from sources who are wasting their time and yours.

What is the name of the program you are trying to transfer.
Perhaps there is an update, revision, or newer program available
offering the same functionality and resources in a smaller and faster
package.

Have you "Google'd" yet?

About the only thing I can think of from what you've given us, is to
attach the files in question to and email message and send them to
yourself with the 1st (original) computer.  Then, retrieve the
messages ... and the files, if you ISP has allowed them to pass ...
with the second computer and put them in their proper directories.

Give it another go & 73

Re: [digitalradio] JA mag-loop and Olivia

2005-11-08 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.
There has been quite a bit of discussion on HFPack lately. Also MFJ has
made some loop tuners, and the cheapest one is $99, so even if you
aren't mechanically inclined like PY1AHD or other OMs you can try it
out. Watch out for high RF voltages (10KV at 40w, maybe), high currents
(20A maybe), and strong near fields (severe RF burns), and high Q (5KHz
bandwidth without retuning, not a problem for digital modes). I plan to
put mine on the roof and run 10W max.

Jerry,

Although your pic didn't reflect what you may have seen and heard was a
new mode called RTTYM or MRTTY, I believe. A new **.dll is circulating
that works in MixW. I responded to one using Olivia and the other
station switched. Another new digital mode on the horizon
