Using macros with TNCs: TNC operations in MixW 2 are based on two
general principles:
1. TNC works in terminal mode (not host mode).
2. TNC state (mode, baudrate, TX/RX state, etc.) is controlled by
using macros.
Usually you will have different sets of macros for different modes
on the same TNC, and there are several steps that should be done for
each set. First, you must define the macros to initialize the TNC
and place it into the mode you want to operate (and de-initialize it
at the end of mode). These two macros are used for this purpose:

OnStartMode
OnEndMode

For example, to operate PACTOR using a KAM+ TNC, you may define them
like this:
Macro: OnStartMode
Label: Start (or whatever you choose)
Text:
 X
PACTOR

Macro: OnEndMode
Label: End (label does not matter)
Text:
X

The first macro sets the center audio frequency and shift to draw
the cursor at Waterfall/Spectrum window, then it sends "Ctrl-C"
and "X" characters to TNC (to make sure it's placed into command
mode), and then sends "PACTOR" command to place TNC into PACTOR
mode. The second macro just places TNC into command mode. After
defining OnStartMode and OnEndMode macros, re-define the TX and RX
macros that are used to make the TNC transmit or receive. For PACTOR
using the KAM+, they may look like this:
Macro: TX
Label: tx (label does not matter)
Text: T

Macro: RX
Label: rx (label does not matter)
Text: E

The first macro sends "Ctrl-C" and "T" characters (to transmit), and
the second one sends "Ctrl-C" and "R" to receive. And now if the
or macros are used in any other macro, like F2
with "CQ CQ CQ..." text, then by pressing F2, the TNC will
transmit "CQ CQ CQ..." and then go back to receive.

Other macros to connect, disconnect, etc. can also be defined using
these methods.

Contest macros: You might like to have another set of macros (with
short "CQ CQ TEST" serial numbers etc..) for contests. At the
Contest Settings dialog (choose a contest from View | Contest mode |
then highlight the contest and select the Edit button) then enter a
name of the Macro file you want to use for this contest (and also
check the Merge macros check-box).

Now, a combination of 3 sets of macros is used: macros for the
specific mode, macros for the specific contest, and your default
macros. Contest macros are only active when View - Contest mode - On
menu is checked.

Configuring Additional Macro Keys: There are several keys which can
be used for containing macros as well as the function keys, but they
are not shown on the control bar, so these keys can only be edited
through the full list (either the default list, the macros for this
mode list, the TNC macros list, or the contest macros list).

At the Edit User Macro dialog, select (or enter) the hot key name in
the Macro field. There are 5 additional keys that are supported now:
Ins
Gray+
Gray-
Gray*
Gray/
Please note that these names are case-sensitive.

The "OnStartMode" and "OnEndMode" macros are executed when you start
or end a mode. For example, if you have the separate set of macros
for SSB, you can define OnStartMode to turn on a Notch filter, and
OnEndMode to turn it off. Now if you switch to SSB, the filter will
be automatically turned on.

Calling a macro from a macro: It's also possible to call a macro
from another macro. For example, if you have the following
configured in the F2 key macro:

CQ CQ CQ de

You might like to use this same text for your Auto CQ. To do this,
just place in the Auto CQ, instead of the Auto CQ text. Now
AutoCQ will play the F2 text. You cannot call a macro from itself,
however, if you try you will be warned about this when you try to
run it. Moreover, you may call a macro anything you want.
For example, you can define a macro like this:
Macro: POWER
Label: (Anything you choose, it will not appear anywhere).
Text: 40
(This will not be shown on the Control Bar because it is not
assigned to a specific key)
Now, this is used with the other macro as follows:
Macro: F6
Label: Brag
Text: The power is watts.
This uses the value that is entered into the POWER macro, and
inserts it into the text for the brag macro. To change the power
macro on-the-fly, choose an unused key (e.g.Ctrl-Shift-F2) and fill
it with like this:
Macro: Ctrl-Shift-F2
Label: myPWR
Text:
Then if you press Ctrl-Shift-F2, it will bring a dialog box with the
value 40 in it. Replace the 40 with 2

[digitalradio] Working Between Signals Re: Study of PACTOR 20M Frequencies

2006-04-23 Thread expeditionradio

Hi Andy,

I agree with you. It is much easier for everyone to cooperate.
Mutual QRM can very easily be avoided by not operating keyboarding
modes directly on top of known PMBO Winlink2000 Pactor frequencies,
especially the most active ones on 20 meters with good propagation
to your QTH.

A case in point are the Olivia 500/16 calling frequencies 14076.4kHz,
14077.4kHz and 14078.4kHz, nestled in the clear spots between
several active Winlink2000 Pactor stations. This works very well.

It is much easier to work between Pactor 1 or Pactor 2 signals
because the pactor bandwidth is narrow. The internationally
recognized automatic station subband between 14100.5 and 14112kHz
has a lot of Pactor3 signals, with pmbo stations arranged in an
overlapping configuration (wider bandwidths than Pactor2). There
are no gaps between Pactor3 pmbo stations in this subband.

A list of Winlink2000 frequencies and pmbo station callsigns is
on the HFLINK bandplans site (Dec2005, source:Winlink2000).

http://www.hflink.com/bandplans/

Also, the PACTOR3 Winlink2000 frequencies on 20 meters are clearly
detailed on the BANDPLANS.COM website:

[digitalradio] Re: DominonEX 22 baud FEC

2006-04-23 Thread Bill McLaughlin

Hi Andy,
Have played alot with DominoEX/FEC on 80/40/30 metershave found it to be very robust, especially considering its bandwidth.  Without the FEC it is marginal. Even at 22 baud with FEC enabled it does well (better than my typing)...I wish more would try it...I often switch from Olivia to DominoEX/FEC if the other station has that capability and find the copy as good or better with a more narrow signal.  Never played with it on 20/15/12/10 so no opinion there...
Be well, Bill - N9DSJ

[digitalradio] Study of PACTOR 20M Frequencies

2006-04-23 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

I did a study of published PACTOR/WINKLINK 20 meter
frequencies for known active stations. There are 76 separate  20 meter
frequencies  (see below). If looking for a place to avoid the publish
pactor frequencies... you might try

(Frequencies mentioned are "center" frequencies)

The frequency spectrum 14062.9    to
14069.9   best bet 14066.5 to 14067.5
  14070
to  14079.9  Maybe 14074.4
  14094
to  14098.7  Looks like 14096.7 is  best bet

14098   to  14098.7
nothing
  14100
to  14107 Maybe 14102.2 and 14105.5 are best
bets
  14107.5
to  14110 Perhaps 14108, 14108.5,

Obviously, not all frequencies are active at the same
time.

The above "best bet" frequencies are NOT suggested
frequencies for specific modes, just a reference for you to
consider.

[digitalradio] Olivia Re: An experiment: CQ test

2006-04-23 Thread expeditionradio

Hi Jerry,

Olivia 500/8 is not used as much for CQ as Olivia 500/16 and Olivia
1000/32 are. When using Olivia it helps to be exactly on one of the
calling or working frequencies, otherwise your signal may blend into
the background. For more info Check the website:

[digitalradio] DominonEX 22 baud FEC

2006-04-23 Thread Andrew O'Brien

I had an interesting Dominio Ex QSO today, using the default "11" baud
rate setting in Multipsk. After switching to 16 we then tried 22 with
FEC, this did very well for a 45 minute digital QSO over a 400 mile
path on 40M in daylight. I have no idea what the conventions are for
Olivia at this baud rate on 40M, beter check my literature! Anyone
else done testing with this mode with FEC?

[digitalradio] Re: An experiment: CQ test

2006-04-23 Thread Jerry W

I used PSK31, Olivia 8/500, Feld Hell on 20 and 30 meters yesterday
April 22, 2006.  I think I may have chose the wrong day, conditions
were very bad here on  20 meters.  I called CQ at various times on the
three modes, not one answer.  Even tried to contact a station in AZ
who usually is 599 here, his signal was to weak to copy.

On 30 meters late aftenoon April 22, 2006 I made one Olivia 8/500
contact with a station in Springfield, OH.  He was calling CQ and I
called him back we had a ten minute QSO that was pretty solid until
the end and the band or popagation fell apart between us.  I tried
later on the three modes calling CQ on 30 meters, no answers.

20 meters seems to be in better shape today April 23, 2006.  Have had
one PSK31 contact with a station in PA, most of that was solid copy.

[digitalradio] Tones from WLO ?

2006-04-23 Thread Andrew J. O'Brien

Anyone know what "mode" the tones from WLO are? I'm
listening to their signal on 8420 (cw) , interspersed with their CW ID is a
PACTOR sounding tone that looks like

The single tone in the picture is the CW
id.
