[digitalradio] Re: Anyone Using the SDR-1000?
Kevin, I have a NIB SDR-1000 100W + ATU plus sound cards that I got a short while ago. I need to schedule the time to start setting it up, but that is a difficult thing to do with my work schedule. Please feel free to email me if you have any specific questions. I'll hopefully be taking a couple of comp days in the next week or two too start setting it up. 73... [digitalradio] Re: DominoEX contest logs/contest so far
No, not the "results" page, the rules page, at http://www.obriensweb.com/dominoexcontest.htm It says: "Log Submission: email to dominoexcontest at gmail.com". That's what's displayed. But hovering the mouse over the email link reveals that the mail you're going to send will go to . at obriensweb.com. And my mail got bounced twice. So I'm assuming that that email address doesn't exist. The same problem now also exists on the "results" page. In short: what you see is not what you get ;-) --- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, "Andrew O'Brien" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > I think you mean the "results" page, I have no created than yet. > the emaila ddress for logs is > > Log Submission: email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Usual contest format for logs. [digitalradio] Re: DominoEX contest logs/contest so far
I just sent mine. Allow me to point out that the email link on the rules page, when clicked, sends mail to a non-existing email address. The displayed email address is correct however; so it's just a matter of copy and paste. I had some problems finding a good way to generate a log in the "Usual contest format for logs"; but I made up something myself. I hope it's acceptable. I made 3 whole QSOs. The plan was to operate at least 6 hours, but I got sick after the first hour, and was "out of order" until Saturday... The next day, in the middle of the NAQP RTTY, it was my wife's turn. I need to have a chat with the chef of the restaurant where we had supper on Friday! Interesting mode. I worked ZL1BYZ as my last QSO, at a time I certainly wasn't expecting it. He called CQ for a very long time after I worked him, and was perfect print almost every single time. Amazing! Right before the start of the contest I figured out a way to send those 3 digit numbers, without having to type them in manually in MultiPSK. I simply put two leading zeroes in front of the "next qso" macro. The idea was to remove one of those zeroes after I logged the 9th QSO, but I never got that far... Worked fine though. Despite all the small problems this was a fun experience. Go ahead and schedule the next one, Andy! Thanks, 73, Gert - K5WW Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Yahoo! Groups gets a make over. Hi Bill, Well, some of what you have heard is indeed true. Several of the new MFSK digi such as Olivia and DominoEx are really far superior in S/N decoding than olde standard RTTY. At this point in time, the main thing olde FSK RTTY has going for it is the momentum of traditional use and installed base. For similar bandwidth, RTTY loses by many decibels... several S-units. If you doubt what many operators are saying, why not try a simple comparison for yourself on the air? You can get free software to try them. Then, come back and tell us you don't believe it. Kevin, My friend and neighbor, W2FS, just acquired an SDR-1000 two weeks ago. I have not visited it yet, but we met for coffee last week and he gave me an update. He is a very tech-savvy person. He said that the radio is not for the ham's that want a radio to unpack and turn on, he spent the first 3 days just reading the 200 page manual. He said that at first he was disappointed when simply examining it via the software interface but the more and more he learned about the no-so-obvious features, the more he liked it. He said that he had not even connected an antenna to it on the day we met. The next day, we talked on the local 2M repeater. He had added an antenna , he said he was "astounded" by how well it receives and by what he can do withe the filters. As of last week, he had not actually transmitted yet but planned to do so this weekend. He was particularly interested in how it does on the digital modes. I'll pass more info on when I talk with him next, I'll also forward your private emai address to him, if that is OK with you ? Re: [digitalradio] Dominoex versus RTTY?
I wonder if many others feel that DEX has enough of a compelling reason to effect a move toward this mode from RTTY. RTTY being an entrenched mode would likely remain in place and you would need to add the new mode as an extra contest. Maybe over many years, you might see some shift in interest toward the new mode? Some of the rigs, such as the ICOM Pro series, are designed to optimize RTTY with special enhanced filters specific to this mode. Even though RTTY doesn't work as deep into the noise as DEX, it probably works good enough. In the past (before the sound card modes) it was common for the operators with the top TUs make the claim that they could print signals that they could not hear. I am sure that if they were using a scope though, they would see the "crossed bananas." Right now I am reading the mail on some non contest RTTY stations and the print is pretty bad on the weaker signal. Which is one reason I don't care for RTTY operation since the newer modes would be working just fine with this kind of signal strength and light static crashes on 40 meters this morning. Many operators seem to run fairly high power levels during RTTY contests and signals are often very strong and easy to see on the waterfall or scope. I found DEX very difficult to see well on the waterfall although you do not have to tune it in as close as RTTY. On the other hand, it may be better to have a rig, software, and mode that requires accurate tuning and therefore insures you can more readily lock on to a specific station and exclude the ones you don't want:) I like to see modes that have a specific target to put your cursor on to tune in the signal, at least when idling, since it makes it much easier to lock on. MFSK16 comes to mind. 73, Rick, KV9U Andrew O'Brien wrote: >I wonder, from the contesting perspective, if anyone got enough >experience with DominoEX this weekend to compare it to RTTY >contesting? [digitalradio] Dominoex versus RTTY?
I wonder, from the contesting perspective, if anyone got enough experience with DominoEX this weekend to compare it to RTTY contesting? I worked the Dominoex contest and a few hours of the NAQP RTTY Contest. I enjoyed the RTTY contest because it was easier, I just parked on a frequency, called CQ, and had 1-2 calls per minuute calling me ! With the DominoEX contest it was as expected, long periods of time between QSOs. So, I am not sure I had the best chance to compare the two digital communication methods. Psychologically, it took my brain a little longer to get used to working a station that my ears could not hear. That happened a couple of times with DominoEX, I think in contesting you get used to operator behavioural cues like beable to hear the station hand-over.. It was nice to get a ZL1 and a VK3 calling me on DominoEX , my simple dipole does not hear many ZLs and VKs these days. I think the best thing I can say about Dominoex at the moment is that under contest conditions I noticed no difference between it and RTTY. By that I mean, speed of operation and ability to decode signals appeared the same. That's using the DominoEX 11 baud default, but I did use 22 baud to successfully call CQ at a faster rate. I did not have enough contacts to experiment with lower baud rate and weak signal reception. So, while the technical specifications of Dominoex may indicate it will out perform RTTY under certain conditions, my experience is sufficient to only conclude that it will do at least as GOOD as RTTY. Of course, I was not able to experience crowded adjacent channel conditions that one gets in a popular RTTY contest. I am not sure how Dominoex would handle this. -- Andy K3UK Fredonia, New York.
