[digitalradio] Digital Voice Freqs 40m / 80m

2006-10-08 Thread expeditionradio
I was just talking with Ken WB6MLC today. Ken has been leading the
HFpack Digital Voice project, which has recently increased the DV
activity on 40m (and 80m) significantly. This group of DV ops, in
mostly western part of USA/Canada is now meeting on the following
frequencies:

Digital Voice 40 meters
7291 kHz USB Primary
7286 kHz USB Alternate

Digital Voice 80 meters
3991 kHz USB Primary
3986 kHz USB Alternate

There is a 40meter DV net on the weekend, and at other times,
operators are encouraged to call and monitor using HamDRM, G4GUO, AOR,
and other DV formats. The frequencies are within the General Class
bands for USA hams.

[digitalradio] WD8ARZ and upcoming ALE Week Status

2006-10-08 Thread WD8ARZ
Looking forward to the upcoming week for ALE ON THE AIR WEEK 2006 (13-23
OCT)

In preparation for this I have done the following:
--
Have put up a new 10-160 Meter Carolina Windom
Bought a LDG AT-200 Pro tuner
Bought the Kenwood TS-480HX 200 Watt Transceiver
--

Thanks to Steve N2CKH, I now realize I need the LDG AT-200 PC version of the
tuner. (... as only the AT-200PC is really suitable for ALE, the other LDG
models such as the AT-200PRO is not in BYPASS during receive whereas the
AT-200PC is set to such via both PC-ALE and MARS-ALE software ...)

The LDG AT-200 PC version will be ordered on Monday and will be here in time
for the weekend ALE fun.

Reason I have made the changes is I have been concerned about the ALE burden
on wearing my beloved FT-1000MP relays to death, This concern has limited
how often I am on and stay on with ALE.

What I hope the benefits with the changes are:
1: TS-480HX doesnt use relays in the bandpass filters (uses switching
transistors, but does use relays in the lpf filters)
2: TS-480HX has excellent cooling and better continuous duty transmit time
and load support (even with the dual fans not running).
3: With the 200 watts, I can use it if needed, but it allows for running
lower power and having better cooling and transmit duty cycle time even
more.
4: Using an external tuner transfers the relay cycle mechanical wear to out
side the transceiver.
5: The LDG AT-200 Pro tuner has memories, and once stored settings for a
frequency are in memory, it makes those tuning selections even faster than
other tuners . except the PC version under computer control). I am
keeping the Pro version because I want a good fast tuner for HF operations
with out using a computer.
6: LDG AT-200 PC under computer control is the best way to go for ALE, and I
very much appreciate Steve supporting the manufacture on bring that about!

Only thing missing at this time is a ALE version that supports the TS-480HX
and LDG AT-200 PC tuner. Currently waiting on replies to Steve, Bonnie and
Charles for software access to support this system in time for the upcoming
event.

Side benefits for the TS-480HX is I am going to pair it up the new HiQ 5/160
mobile antenna purchase and have lots of fun this winter with HF mobile. Now
it looks like I need to get a laptop for mobile ALE eh ??? Hi Hi

Hey, good luck to all this weekend. I am looking forward to it!

73 from Bill - WD8ARZ

One of the problems with the SDR1K documents is that they use VAC

Just emailed the Flex-Radio technical support guy to see if V4.03 is the

[digitalradio] Digital Voice: Some thoughts after one week.

2006-10-08 Thread Andrew O'Brien
I have been QRV on digital voice ,using WinDRM, and thought I would offer
some rookie/newbie random thoughts.

1. This mode's performance may appear counter-intuitive for most digital
mode operators. By that I mean, we associate digital modes like PSK31,
Olivia, MT63, etc, with the ability to communicate under weak signal
conditions. To be able to communicate when SSB analog voice signals are not
reliable.

It is the opposite with Digital Voice , as manifested in WinDRM. Perfectly
copyable CW and traditional SSB voice signals do not translate in to enough
signal to maintain the digital voice transmissions. e.g. my analog QSO
today with Gerhard OE3GBB was about a 449 RST. That is; Readable with
practically no difficulty, Fair signals . However, I had to focus my brain
quite a bit to pick his voice out between the QRM. When we switched to DV,
the audio was stunning in quality (better than FM on 2M) but I only copied
about 40% of what he sent, the rest was just silence. So, I am not sure
what use this communication method has if we need good signals rather
than fair or weak signals. If one can copy a person fair to well with SSB
analog, why do we need to switch to DV voice?

2. The software (WinDRM) is very well designed and fairly easy to figure
out. The ability to have the software switch Mic/Line In settings in the
sound mixer is very useful. The waterfall and other tuning display
indicators are extremely well thought out.

3. There is something odd about copying HF signals with good audio
fidelity. My old ham brain is so used to Donald Duck under water SSB
audio that hearing a DV signal does not sound like real radio. It IS real
radio because it is sent/received via radio waves , but it feels like you
are on Echolink , IRLP, or Skype!.

4. It is exiting to be on air with just the few that are active. If you
expect to hear LOTS of DRM signals, you'll be disappointed. Activity is
less than Hell or MT63!

5. WinDRM shows that DV can be done well without expensive outboard hardware
devices (AOR). It works with a fairly low CPU PC. I think we are in the
Betamax-VHS era for amateur radio digital voice, with several incompatible
DV modes.

RE: [digitalradio] Digital Voice: Some thoughts after one week.

Title: Message

 Just my
two cents worth, Andy. I'm even newer at it than you, but today was a real poor
day to be trying DV. With a SSB contester parked on 14.236 all afternoon, I had
no chance at all to copy OE3GBB, or anyone else. I caught enough of the signal
to get his call, but that was it.
 I'm
trying to determine how to get the inbound audio from WinDRM out to either the
speaker on the PC, or the headset I'm using. I seem to be able to transmit okay
so far, but it's an "alligator setup" - all mouth and no
ears!

I have been "QRV" on digital voice ,using WinDRM, and thought I would offer
some rookie/newbie random thoughts.1. This mode's performance may
appear counter-intuitive for most digital mode operators. By that I mean,
we associate digital modes like PSK31, Olivia, MT63, etc, with the ability
to communicate under weak signal conditions. To be able to communicate
when SSB analog voice signals are not reliable. It is the opposite
with Digital Voice , as manifested in WinDRM. Perfectly copyable CW and
traditional SSB voice signals do not translate in to enough signal to
maintain the digital voice transmissions. e.g. my analog QSO today with
Gerhard OE3GBB was about a 449 RST. That is; Readable with practically no
difficulty, Fair signals . However, I had to focus my brain quite a bit to
pick his voice out between the QRM. When we switched to DV, the audio was
stunning in quality (better than FM on 2M) but I only copied about 40% of
what he sent, the rest was just silence. So, I am not sure what "use" this
communication method has if we need "good" signals rather than fair or
weak signals. If one can copy a person fair to well with SSB analog, why
do we need to switch to DV voice?2. The software (WinDRM) is very well
designed and fairly easy to figure out. The ability to have the software
switch Mic/Line In settings in the sound mixer is very useful. The
waterfall and other tuning display indicators are extremely well thought
out.3. There is something "odd" about copying HF signals with good
audio fidelity. My old ham brain is so used to "Donald Duck" under water
SSB audio that hearing a DV signal does not sound like "real radio". It IS
real radio because it is sent/received via radio waves , but it feels like
you are on Echolink , IRLP, or Skype!.4. It is exiting to be on

I think that you may be looking at this from the wrong angle, Andrew,

DRM is intended as a very high quality mode, capable of very high
quality reproduction and, just like in FM broadcast terms, this has its
limitations. You need high s/n+n ratios and the associated bandwidth to
go with it.

If Amateur Radio were just about being able to work ultra-DX then many
modes and bands would never have been developed. SSTV, especially
Digital SSTV, also requires good signals and wide (in comparison to
CW/SSB or even WSJT modes) bandwidth. Fast Scan TV on 23cm requires
even more bandwidth. However, people do use wideband modes and enjoy
the challenge that these modes bring. If you use some of the very high
microwave bands a few miles is an achievement. That doesn't mean that
quite long distances are not able to be worked, given the right
conditions and a good deal of application, but you are not going to get
DXCC of 10GHz, unless you go to using moon bounce, which is possible,
but not easy...

If you want to work the world, quickly, then DRM, Fast Scan TV and other
specialist modes are not going to be the way to go. However, if you
enjoy a challenge and find that every contact completed, whether that
contact is over a distance of 1 mile or 1000 miles, is an enjoyable
proof that it can be done, then stick with it.

[digitalradio] ALE On The Air Week 13-23 Oct (Automatic Link Establishment QSO Party)

2006-10-08 Thread aotaw2006
==HFLINK SPECIAL BULLETIN==
ALE On-The-Air Week 13-23 October AOTAW-2006
The Automatic Link Establishment International QSO Party
START: 0001 UTC 13 October 2006
END: 2359 UTC 23 October 2006

HFLINK is sponsoring this new International Amateur Radio event.
All ham radio operators worldwide are invited to participate in 10
days of amateur radio HF-ALE Automatic Link Establishment activity on
the air. AOTAW is an open operating event for hams to explore ALE
communications and equipment. The experience gained by operator
participation is useful for HF emergency and disaster relief
communications.

There are now hundreds of amateur radio operators worldwide with ALE
stations. The AOTAW gives operators a chance to exercise ALE
transceivers, antennas, software, systems, and operating procedures.

ALE OPERATOR CERTIFICATE for AOTAW2006
HFLINK issues a unique ALE Operator Certificate to operators who
participate in AOTAW. To qualify for an ALE Operator Certificate, the
operator must initiate and complete at least 5 QSOs through Automatic
Link Establishment with other ALE operators. The ALE link must then be
followed by communication either by voice or texting in any mode.
Additional certificate endorsements are issued by HFLINK for operators
who link with 25 stations or more.

LOGS:
To qualify for a certificate, please send a Date/Callsign/Frequency
log of your ALE QSOs by 31DEC2006 via email to: aotaw2006@ yahoo.com
The certificate will be returned via direct email.

OPERATING STANDARDS FOR AOTAW
All operators are reminded to be courteous and operate within the
recognised Amateur Radio ALE channels and standards. Please remember,
AOTAW is not a contest, there is no score. AOTAW is intended to
provide a way for more operators to gain valuable practical knowledge
and expertise in the operation of an Amateur Radio ALE station.

CQ - NETCALLS, ALLCALLS, ANYCALLS
1. NETCALLS: HFL net or QRZ net may be used as the general CQ
calls for the event.
2. ALLCALL: SHOULD NOT BE USED in AOTAW. A QSO started by an ALLCALL
does not qualify as a valid ALE link.
3. ANYCALL: Anycalls may be used. But remember, many ALE stations are
not programmed to respond to Anycalls.

RECOMMENDED ALE QSO PROCEDURE AND MODES
1. Call CQ: Transmit a CALL NETCALL to either the HFL net or the
QRZ net. Wait at least 1 minute for responses.
2. Call a station: Transmit an INDIVIDUAL CALL to the station. It may
be necessary to first add the station's callsign (address) to your ALE
address list.
3. Upon linking on a VOICE channel, then use USB Voice for the QSO.
4. Upon linking on a DIGITAL channel, then send a short AMD message
with the linked station.
5. When QSO is completed, transmit the CLEAR LINK signal.

STANDARDS FOR DIGITAL TEXT QSO
After initial ALE link on a DIGITAL channel, use the universal short
text message for ALE, called AMD. An AMD message request to the other
operator can ask for other digital text keyboarding, such as:

ALE AMD: is the universal ALE text message system.
DTM ARQ: only by stations who are using PC-ALE or MARS-ALE software.
PSK31: (1500Hz centre) ask operator first via AMD.
Olivia: (1500Hz centre, 500/16) ask operator first via AMD.
CW: ask operator first via AMD.

ABOUT AOTAW
Amateur operators who use ALE for government and non-governmental
organisations may be especially interested in participation, for it
provides more chance to work with ALE linking and greater
understanding of the system. It is a chance for operators to explore
the various operational aspects of ALE that may not be utilised
otherwise in a more structured organisation ALE network. The 10 days
of AOTAW enables operators to participate as they can, for any amount
of time in the event, and to experience ALE operation under various
ionospheric propagation conditions.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: QRV DV 7166 and 3733

2006-10-08 Thread KV9U
Well I was able to print out Andy's fairly long message on 7166 LSB.
Also, could copy message from Tony, KT2Q. Also, worked Tony and KB3MOW
on LSB voice, but no go on DV.

So the text messages don't seem to require all that much signal. Maybe 3
to 5 db above the noise?

From what I can tell, longer distance evening 75 meters would not work
most of the year unless you had rock crusher signals due to the QRN.
Even 40 would be marginal. I can see that the higher frequencies would
be best for this kind of mode since they tend to have much lower
atmospheric noise to overcome. However, unless you are within ground
wave, it will only work with stations in the skip zone. And that assumes
the particular band is open outside of the ground wave pattern.

Rick, KV9U

[digitalradio] 80M DV freq

2006-10-08 Thread Andrew O'Brien
Good point, the WinDRM web site suggest

Suggested Frequencies:
80 Meters:
3.733

That part of the band is listed for CW, RTTY, DATA but the usual
convention for digital voice is to use the SSB analog voice frequencies
which would put it above 3750 .

I'll try 3759 for the next few tests.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: 80M DV freq

2006-10-08 Thread KV9U
How do you set the mike gain? I am using a standard el cheapo electret
type mike plugged into the computer mike input, but can only guess where
the level should be.

I wish we would pick one frequency and sideband for each band for basic
contacts that we could monitor. This is what the SSTV folks do and if
they need more space they can just move up 3 KHz or so.

I seem to be getting RF into my ICOM 756 Pro 2 rig when I am using my
dipole on 75 meters so can not operate on that band at this time, but
could listen. I can run 50 watts on 40 meters without triggering the ALC.

Should we run this mode similar to other digital modes where you adjust
the audio input levels to be just low enough with a given RF drive
setting to not trigger ALC?

Rick, KV9U

 I
believe you put the program into TX Voice and adjust your mic input to get a

[digitalradio] 40M DV bandplan

2006-10-08 Thread Andrew O'Brien

Yep, I should have thought about the folks that are restricted to General
class, I used to hate it when people did that to me!

So, I'm going to try 7238 which seems clear of broadcast band QRM.

Rick's point about SNR on a band like 80M at night is well taken, so I'll
give up on 80M but will try 7238 until 0200 tonight.

By the way, as Rick suggests the text message transmitted in the ACQ.txt
filerequire less of an SNR than DV. I made a .txt file (called
r.txt) for returning to stations that I hear after my ACQ. I have it up
and running so that I can simply change the call sign and SNR report, save it,
and transmit it as a picture. I have included it below so that you can
steal and personalize.

Andy K3UK

--

KV9U , Good evening . Your report is SNR=7.1

Name here is Andy and the location if Fredonia

New York (FN02hk) about 45 miles South West of Buffalo, NY..

Running 100 watts here in to a dipole.

So, how copy ? If SNR is above a 9.0, we may want to switch to
Digital Voice.

Back to you de Andy K3UK.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: 80M DV freq

2006-10-08 Thread KV9U
I am using just the computer's built in sound card. I am not sure if it
is possible to make this work when switching back and forth since
wouldn't you have to switch the recording input from line to mike when
going from receive to transmit?

Not been able to get any mike response so have to be doing something
wrong. Not hearing a peep out of the computer speakers either. So maybe
I am doing this completely wrong.

I am picking up KT2Q, Tony's text message with around 5 db S/N on 7238.
The signal is about S5 on my 756 Pro 2 meter which means I am receiving
about a 12 uV signal which would be very useable for SSB and way more
than necessary for many of the regular digital modes.

Not sure how useful DV will be and even then I suspect the main niche
would be as a substitute for ESSB operation due to the expected coming
restriction of bandwidths on HF frequencies.

On the other hand, based on the fact that the text messaging seems
pretty good, and very fast and accurate, why wouldn't this type of mode
work as a higher speed version of a SCAMP type ARQ digital mode?

With the slowest robust mode, what kind of S/N ratio can it work down to
for just sending data?

Hi Tony,

The HFpack DV group has very good luck using the AOR units on 40
meters. Most of the operation is single-hop NVIS around the western
USA in the two hours just before local sunset. The S/N is very good,
even for QRP stations, and there is very little broadcast QRM in The
West at that time of day.

The same is true on 80 meters, except the best times are shortly after
local sunset and in the morning before 10AM local time. Later at
night, when the bands go long, the tropical lightning storms make the
S/N worse.

Sadly, we can't use DV on 60 meters... that would be a great band for
DV. I can hear commercial and government stations using DV on 5MHz

[digitalradio] Re: Digital Voice: Some thoughts after one week.

I have been QRV on digital voice ,using WinDRM, and thought I
would offer
 some rookie/newbie random thoughts.

 1. This mode's performance may appear counter-intuitive for most
digital
mode operators. By that I mean, we associate digital modes like
PSK31,
Olivia, MT63, etc, with the ability to communicate under weak
signal
conditions. To be able to communicate when SSB analog voice
signals are not
 reliable.

It is the opposite with Digital Voice , as manifested in WinDRM.
Perfectly
copyable CW and traditional SSB voice signals do not translate in
to enough
signal to maintain the digital voice transmissions. e.g. my
analog QSO
today with Gerhard OE3GBB was about a 449 RST. That is; Readable
with
practically no difficulty, Fair signals . However, I had to focus
my brain
quite a bit to pick his voice out between the QRM. When we
switched to DV,
the audio was stunning in quality (better than FM on 2M) but I
only copied
about 40% of what he sent, the rest was just silence. So, I am
not sure
what use this communication method has if we need good signals
rather
than fair or weak signals. If one can copy a person fair to well
with SSB
analog, why do we need to switch to DV voice?

 2. The software (WinDRM) is very well designed and fairly easy to
figure
out. The ability to have the software switch Mic/Line In settings
in the
sound mixer is very useful. The waterfall and other tuning
display
indicators are extremely well thought out.

 3. There is something odd about copying HF signals with good
audio
fidelity. My old ham brain is so used to Donald Duck under
water SSB
audio that hearing a DV signal does not sound like real radio.
It IS real
radio because it is sent/received via radio waves , but it feels
like you
are on Echolink , IRLP, or Skype!.

 4. It is exiting to be on air with just the few that are active.
If you
expect to hear LOTS of DRM signals, you'll be disappointed.
Activity is
 less than Hell or MT63!

 5. WinDRM shows that DV can be done well without expensive
outboard hardware
devices (AOR). It works with a fairly low CPU PC. I think we are
in the
Betamax-VHS era for amateur radio digital voice, with several
incompatible
 DV modes.

 Andy K3UK

Andy,

I've had some of the same thoughts. Much of the attraction of Ham
radio to a lot of people is the ability to work long distances. CW
still lives and PSK31 has been widely accepted because of this. It
was quite a thrill when I worked someone in Russia with PSK31 who
was using a homebrew rig with 5 watts output. PSK31 has opened Ham
radio to a lot of people who can't put up a big antenna or run high
power.

When I first tried analog SSTV a few months ago I thought about how
primitive it was compared to digital communications today. However
when I tried HamPal it was very disappointing to find out how
difficult it was to receive a picture even with an S9 signal. The
picture quality is stunning but the success rate is so low that it
will never replace analog SSTV.

I had hoped that DV would be able to improve the quality of
communication over analog voice in conditions when analog voice was
marginal. It seems that if we could trade some of the voice quality
for better weak signal performance it would be much more attractive
to many hams. With SSTV, weak signal performance could easily be
improved by reducing picture resolution and reducing the data rate.
That is a little more difficult to do with voice since voice
communications must be in real time - we can't just slow the data
rate down to fit the channel conditions.

I work in cellular communications and know that good voice quality
can be maintained with a data rate of 8k bps. It seems reasonable
that useable voice quality can be produced with half that data
rate. Are there any communications engineers in this group that can
give us some idea whether a useable quality digitized voice can be
sent over a 2.5 KHz wide HF channel with SNR comparable to or less
than what is required for analog voice?

Ed
