[digitalradio] Coaxial Antenna System - Patent 7,151,497

2007-01-05 Thread expeditionradio
One of my patents was issued a few weeks ago (19 December 2006).
US Patent Number 7,151,497 Coaxial Antenna System

Some of the applications for it are: ALE, channel scanning
transceivers, spread spectrum, and broadband data communications.
Antenna systems using the invention are already in several
commercial and gov products. Antennas for ALE and FH applications
with 2:1 or lower SWR over the 1.6-80MHz range have been
manufactured, as well as multi-hundred MHz low SWR broadband
antenna systems in the UHF range. One of the commercial consumer
applications is a 76-170MHz miniature antenna inside a portable
AM/FM/VHF receiver.

Abstract
An antenna system of coaxial elements and terminating impedances
produces controlled bandwidth, broadband, and wideband performance
under a variety of near field influences, with capability for
simultaneous and alternating reception and radiation of
electromagnetic radio energy. The antenna system enables broader
bandwidths within miniaturized areas of confinement relative to
wavelength. Singular elements of the system enable, and a plurality of
elements of the system are combined to form specific bandpass, band
reject, duplexing, and diplexing for radio frequencies as a function
of the antenna system. The antenna system features complex terminating
impedances which combine with characteristic impedances of coaxial
structures to yield efficient radiating and matching functions for
radio energy over a controlled bandwidth. The antenna system
simultaneously utilizes the skin effect of electron flow with
different vectors flowing on the internal and the external surfaces of
the outside conductor of coaxial antenna elements with different vectors.

Side note:
The invention was developed over a number of years, and it took
about 3 years for the patent process.
An amateur radio antenna using the coaxial antenna system invention
has not been marketed... however, I have personally been using one
of the dipole configurations of it on the HF ham bands for several
years for ALE and portable HF/VHF work.
