[digitalradio] New : PSK Automatic Propagation Reporter

2008-02-17 Thread Andrew O'Brien

PSK Automatic Propagation Reporter
This is a project to automatically gather reception records of PSK
activity and then make those records available in near realtime to
interested parties — typically the amateur who initiated the
communication. The way that it works is that many amateurs will run a
client that will monitor received traffic for callsigns (the pattern
'de callsign callsign') and, when seen, will report this fact. This is
of interest to the amateur who transmitted adn they will be able to
see where their signal was received. The pattern chosen is typically
part of a standard CQ call. The duplicate check is to make sure that
the callsign is not corrupted.

The way that this would be used is that an amateur would call CQ and
could then (within a few minutes) see where his signal was received.
This can be useful in determining propagation conditions or in
adjusting antenna and/or radio parameters. It will also provide an
archive of reception records that can be used for research purposes.

There is a prototype map display of this information.

If this is interesting to you, then please contact me at the email
address below to see if there is a client for your PSK decoding
application, or you can contact the author of your package directly,
and point him at this page.
For Beta Testers
For Digital Master 780 (part of Ham Radio Deluxe), I have written a
small addon that generates these reports. This package can be
downloaded as a zip file. To install, just unzip it, and then run the
BAT file. This will monitor the Superbrowser window for new callsigns
and will report them. You need to run the BAT file whenever you login
to Windows -- the program does not install anything. To uninstall,
just delete the files. The program works for me on Vista, your mileage
may vary. If you have any problems, then send me email at the address
below. The program does not generate any output. To see if it is
working for you, the easiest way is to pick a callsign that you have
seen 'recognized' in the Superbrowser, and enter it into the map
displayer above. Within five minutes, at least one of the markers
should be on your location.
For Developers
There is a complete description of the protocol used to submit the
information, together with information on a test server to use.

[digitalradio] RTTY QUESTIONS

2008-02-17 Thread jeffnjr484
Hello,

I've never tried Rtty and would like some advice on how to start using
this program is a tnc better then the soundcard mode or is it about
the same i have a pk232mbx also which is best for contesting any help
to get me going would be great thanks

I also have a PSK232mbx. I have not used in for RTTY in many years.
For regular RTTY I would recommend that you try Winwarbler which will
also do PSK31. You may also want to try RTTY in Multipsk of VBdigi.
For contesting try N1MM Logger. N1MM Logger and Winwarbler both use
the MMTTY engine for RTTY which is considered equal or better than
most hardware RTTY options under $600.00

[digitalradio] SDR Presentation at Chicago ARRL/TAPR DCC

2008-02-17 Thread Mark Thompson
SDR Presentation Announced for Chicago ARRL/TAPR DCC(Digitial Communications
Conference) Sunday Seminar

'Software Radio Through the Looking-Glass'

Phil Harman, VK6APH

One of the most exciting, and rapidly evolving, aspects of Ham Radio is that of
Software Defined Radios. What was initially left to technical minded
experimenters is now starting to move into the main stream. The latest SDRs
offer performance equal to the best analogue radios on the market.

For those brought up on analogue radios there is quite a learning curve to
understand exactly how these new radios work, what they do well and what
shortcomings there have.

Phil will guide us through the basics of SDRs right up to the very latest
techniques that digitise signals directly at the antenna socket. Using diagrams
and a minimum of math he will cover such subjects as front end design, mixers,
why we need I and Q signals, digital up and down conversion,AGC techniques,
noise blanking and high efficiency Power Amplifiers.

The presentation will be highly interactive, so be sure to bring along that
question that has been puzzling you for so long!

Biography:

Phil Harman, VK6APH, has held a ham license for over 40 year. For much of this
time he has worked on leading edge RF techniques related to receivers and
transmitters. Phil's current passion is the development of fully digital HF
radios. Phil co-writes the Software Defined Radio column in the
RSGB Radio Communications journal and also co-authored the SDR chapter in the
latest RSGB Handbook.
