I'll be working the JARTS test, RTTY contesting is my favorite. Contesters
and DXers do drive new rig designs, antennas, etc that we all get to buy and
operate. Also contesting is the only niche in the hobby that is growing
appreciably.

Having said that if contest sponsors would designate specific frequency sub
bands for contest operation, this would go a long way in quelling the
tensions between contesters and rag chewers. Operate outside the designated
sub band and the contact doesn't count.

Just my .22 due to inflation.

[digitalradio] Yet another RTTY contest

2008-10-16 Thread Andrew O'Brien
I am aware that whenever there is a major RTTY contest, non-contesting
hams complain about the impact of the contest on the bands. This
weekend is the JARTS RTTY contes, I took a look at the 2007 results ad
discovered just over 700 total entrants. For a 48 hour contest, this
does not seem like a number that should trouble non contesters...
700+ operators spread out around the world over 4 or more bands .
Typically , each day, there are about 500 active PSK stations
transmitting around the world. So, although the bands do get a tad
crowded at times, it is hardly a major problem. Seems that under the
"use them or lose them" argument, the RTTY contesters are doing the
ham world a service.
