I have been beaconing in ALE400 the last two days starting at 2100 UTC for 15
and for 30 minutes. No response so far even though there was still an
acceptable propagation to North America when looking at the PSK stations qrv at
that time of the day. I will be qrv again at a similar time from Monday to
Wednesday next week.

I had a very nice chat with DF1KBN in JO32 on 80 m (3587 USB)starting around
2145 UTC last night (I am in JN48BQ). It was interesting to see how well ALE400
worked down to 10 mW at his side despite of heavy local qrm I have on 80 m in
the evenings.

Hope to see somebody on 20 m next week as well.

I would like to put in a few words in
defense of the ARRL.? I learned the code prior to
getting my novice license in 1955.? At the time, that
was just about the only way one could learn, at least on a
  kid's salary.
These transmissions have been on forever, so I do question

Why is the code practice sessons even needed now ? In 1955 very few
probably had tape recorders or an easy method to get perfect code
practice. Now you can get a computer for almost nothing (some will
even give you an old computer just to get it out of the house). I gave
one away to a fellow years ago just so he could run a code program.

When I was working on my Extra, I got myself up to speed listening to W1AW.
I suspect that people still do that; who am I to tell them that they have
to use a computer instead? Maybe they do it while driving to or from work;
for a while, I did, and was happy to be able to do so.

I grant that Morse proficiency no longer is required for licensing, but it
certainly is required if one is to work CW, and I find the W1AW sessions to
be useful in keeping my speed up when I don't have the opportunity to get
on the air and pound brass. I'm not entirely happy with the ARRL, but I do
appreciate this service -- though I very strongly wish they'd move the 80m
transmissions away from the digital sub-band, and have told them so in no
uncertain terms.

Last winter there was a conflict between the voluntary 160 meter digital
mode sub band and W1AW's code practice. I asked them to move their frequency
and they did.

Personally I think that the ARRL continued Morse code practice broadcasts
are no longer necessary. If they stopped they would save money on their
monthly electric bill.

An over the air copy is much better practice. After all, you get the
qrm/qrn/etc. in there, which is real stuff, and prepares people for radio copy,
versus the perfect signal from a computer. Even better than the perfectly keyed
copy from W1AW would be simply listening to some ops send - with hand keys. I
use a straight hand key to teach code, then when the students hear perfect
machine sent, their should be no problem in copying that.

Allow me to throw in one more thought...

I believe we'd all be better off if the machines were segregated
from the humans. This is an extension of the current flawed
attended/unattended scheme. Let's keep one segment of an Amateur
allocation reserved for all the manual usage and put the machines in
what we used to call the unattended segment. Given that concept, the
code practice sessions would be moved to the machine segment of the
band...

Recommended frequencies for digital modes

Active digital mode frequency list compiled by Jason Buchanan - N1SU

There is a lot of discrepancy as to what frequencies are recommended vs.
desirable for use on the digital modes. Other modes like MT63 are even more
confusing because of their robust flexibility - interleave and width for
example. One person's favorite may or may not be another's favored digital
mode frequency. The most common digital mode frequency is 14.070 USB - I
have success at starting a QSO with PSK31 and then QSY up the band and
switch to another mode.

The list below should be considered a guide and not the required
frequencies. You may have to tune up and down a few KC to find other active
stations. The 20 meter frequencies are probably the most active but
are also subbands for RTTY and packet use so be mindful of others!

Region 1 Europe digital mode frequencies are typically in the lower portion of
the band
which is an SWR bonus if your antenna is tuned for the CW portion of the
band.

Soundcard digital modes are used using USB, never LSB. Clover, RTTY,
PACKET, AMTOR and PACTOR typically use LSB, however.

Frequencies listed below are for dial QRG:

160 meters
1807 - PSK31, MT63 and MFSK

1838 - PSK31 and MFSK

80 meters
3580 - PSK31 and PSK63

3582 - MFSK16 and MT63 500Hz Short interleave

3585 - MT63 1000Hz Long

40 meters
7030 - PSK31 - Europe PSK frequency

7035 - PSK31, MT63, digital modes for all DX
7037 - MT63 - Europe MT63

7035 - PSK31

30 meters
10132 through 10139 - PSK31 and other modes

10137 - MT63

20 meters
14064.5 - Clover

14065 - Clover

14070 - Just about everything MixW offers can be found here

14109 - Mostly MT63, some MFSK and occasional Q15X25

14109.5 - Q15X25 - MixW centers at 1375Hz above VFO frequency. I use the
settings that Ron KA2HZO have documented on his website.

14111 - same as 14109.5

14113 - same as 14109.5

14115 - same as 14109.5

17 meters
18100 - PSK, MT63 and other modes

15 meters
21109 - PSK, MT63 and other modes - MT63 on sked

21130 - PSK, MT63 and other modes - EU

21070 - PSK, MT63 and other modes

12 meters
24920 - PSK, MT63 and other modes

24930 - MT63 in Europe, although this is the upper edge of the CW/data
subband in the US and is the 12m NCDXF beacon frequency

[digitalradio] Re: Saturday/Sunday WINMOR-ALE-FLARQ Experiment

2009-09-25 Thread Tony
Andy,

I'll be QRV ALE-400 starting this evening (Friday) and the rest of the weekend
on 20 meters. I've tested mail transfers with the mode many times; it will run
200 bytes / minute with moderate signals. A 100 word text message will usually
run 2 minutes; start to finish.

I will not run the mode unattended on 14077.0 so best if we coordinate on the
sked page.

Quick Guide for Multipsk file / mail transfers.

1. Switch ALE-400 mode (Click ARQ FAE)
2. Click AUX FUNCTIONS
3. Place call sign in CALL-- box then click CALL--. This will connect you to
the other station.
3. In AUX FUNCTIONS WINDOW Click FILE TO SEND - open the file.
4. Click the ATTACH FILE box then click SEND MAIL + FILE

The file will transfer automatically. Watermark graphic shows progress. I
recommend adding EOT at the end of the message. To view the mail, click the
MAIL button at the top of the main program window.

An alternate to selectively calling / connecting to a specific station from the
AUX FUNCTIONS is to just click CQ button located in the middle of the main
window. Any station hearing your CQ will automatically connect. Make sure the
ARQ FAE buttons are pushed.

See below for Quick Start Guide for setting up Multipsk

Tony -K2MO

Quick Start Guide For ALE-400

Multipsk Download Site : http://f6cte.free.fr/index_anglais.htm

Note. Do not install the program from the desktop. Copy the Multipsk ZIP file
to a temporary folder and click the INSTALL.EXE file. By default, the program
will be installed in the Multipsk folder.

Configuration:

The program should open the configuration screen on the first installation. If
not, click CONFIGURATION located in the upper left corner of the main window
and click CONFIGURATION SCREEN.

In the CONFIGURATION SCREEN.

Click SERIAL PORT to select your PTT COMPORT
Click OPTIONS FOR SERIAL PORTS (if additional settings are needed)
Click SOUND CARD INPUT / OUTPUT to configure your sound card
Click RX/TX SCREEN button to return to main window

Entering Your Personal Information:

In the upper left corner of the main window, click CONFIGURATION / PERSONAL
DATA. Enter your call sign, name, locator and so on - click save.

RSID Management:

Click CONFIGURATION / MANAGEMENT OF THE IDENTIFIERS
Click TRANSMISSION OF YOUR CALL SIGN + LOCATOR in the popup window*
Click QUIT on the bottom of this window to return to the main program window.

*Note. Your call sign and locator will be taken from the information entered in
the PERSONAL DATA window.

Reed Solomon Identifiers:

The RS ID's are located in the upper left side of the main program window above
the waterfall. These indentifiers will remain active once clicked. Unclick to
deactivate.

RSID - this transmits the Reed Solomon mode identifier when clicked. It lets
others know what mode you are transmitting. In ALE400, the Reed Solomon ID is
automatically sent so this button stays in use.

RX RSID - when active, this button allows Multipsk to automatically switch
modes upon RSID reception.

RX CALL ID - activates the reception of the CALL ID allowing you to see the
other stations call sign and locator or CALL ID. It will appear inside the
waterfall once decoded.

Sending the CALL ID

Clicking the CALL ID button (located on the far left of side of the main
window) will SEND your CALL ID which is your call sign and locator. It will
appear in the waterfall at the receiving station.

RSID Map Activation:

The Multipsk Map will display upon the reception of the transmitting stations
CALL ID and will show that stations location on the map.

Waterfall:

Waterfall controls are located on the right side of the main window. Make sure
WATERFALL / HIGH is clicked for best results. Adjust the waterfall color and
contrast using the up/down COLOR buttons.

Appearance:

Font type, color and window size buttons are located on the bottom left of the
main window. Click FONTS / HEIGHT to adjust to your preference.

Macros

Patrick has already configured the Multipsk macros. The user information for
each macro is taken from the PERSONAL DATA where your call sign, name and
locator are stored. If you'd like to customize the macros, right click on the
macro buttons. Remember to click SAVE AND CLOSE when finished.

Using the ALE-400 ARQ FAE CHAT MODE

In the main window, click on ALE-400 mode (not 141ALE) and the ARQ FAE button
located in the middle of the window (buttons stay pushed in).

Click the CQ button next to ARQ FAE button to send a CQ. The CQ will go out as
soon as the button is pressed; transmitting 6 seconds and listening for 7
seconds. To end the call, click the END button next to the CQ button.

Note - the CQ must finish before you can end the call.

Multipsk will connect automatically once the ALE-400 signal is detected by
another station. That stations call sign will appear in the RX window along
with a text connect confirmation. Your PC speaker will BEEP to

2009-09-25 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

First of all THANKS to all those of you that replied with ideas and suggestions.

I have had a chance over the past couple of days to get into the computer and
determined a few funnies.

1. When I removed the case lid and then replaced it I found the noise level had
increases, so there is a bad ground between the two.
2. I placed a filter/conditioner in the mains supply, this improved the amount
of noise and would be acceptable to use now, but there was still a small amount
present.
3. I tried out my new(ish) laptop, an ASUS Core-2 CPU and found that there was
no noise (if there was it was very low). However I like to run the 3 big
monitors and monitor everything.
4. The monitors are not the cause of the noise, as I tested these by cycling
them on/off.

Now that I have determined some things I might get it running on-air this
weekend.
BTW, I have noticed that 7080 down in the South Pacific is mainly voice, have
not heard too much digital. Might be able to sneak some WINMOR in. Will list
when I am ready and on air.

Now back to the computer (desktop) and see if I can improve on it.

Regards

Kevin, ZL1KFM.

  Hello kevin

Is your hamshack and computer on the same power outlet??

Try to use another outlet (maybe from next room with a long cable) :.

Has the noise gone or become lower ???

You can try to put a filter between the pc and the power outlet in the wall:.

Can be built for a few bucks

3 caps : a bifilar wound coil and a resistor is all you need :.

If you are not a homebrewer these filters can be bought in almost any
electronic store :.

There are several on the market :.. (from 1A ═1phase to 60A 3phase)

Try out the ps of your other pc :. You said it has lower power but for just
trying out you can disconnect 2 of your 3 hd╢s

And you can also unplug your cd-rom and/or floppydisk cause you don╢t need
this for testing your rf noise problems

If the noise is gone you have to talk with your wife (for the new ps) : grin
:.

I use a laptop for all my hamware :. The power that the pc needs is lower on
a laptop/notebook

They are optimized in the power consumtion for longer battery life :. Lower
currents = lower noise

The laptop has almost no internal wiring inside (just a few short cables) :.
No wires = no noise from them

But surely changing your pc is not the solution you are looking for
:.═══

Is the noise received in your antenna? (disconnect the antenna to check) :

I have a very very light noise from my notebook ps (just s1-s2 with preamp on)

If I move the ps around a bit I can find a place where the noise is almost
gone :.

So try out if changing the ps helps or build a inline filter :: that╢s the
best I can tell about your problem

Good luck in finding a solution for your rf noise

[digitalradio] Help Re: Configuration of Rigblaster Pro and Yaesu FT 897D

2009-09-25 Thread ei5dd
Has anyone ideas about the Configuration of the Rigblaster Pro to the FT 897D?
The description of the Yeasu settings seem very vague. The initial setup with
Digipan works as does the Mic and PTT but when I connect up the leads described
below I get no results only receive.

I have the audio in and out via the 6 pin DIN socket. I have the RXD, TXD, and
GND connections to the CAT Socket. I have tried configuring the P16 jumpers but
none of the settings work. Receive is fine but I cannot make it go into
transmit. The connections to the computer were checked and the serial interface
is working.

Maybe this is not the way to go about it. I am hoping to use all the facilities
of this equipment with DM780 (Ham Radio Deluxe)

All ideas would be most welcome,

Andy,

I'll be QRV ALE-400 starting this evening (Friday) and the rest of the
weekend on 20 meters. I've tested mail transfers with the mode many times;
it will run 200 bytes / minute with moderate signals. A 100 word text
message will usually run 2 minutes; start to finish.

I will not run the mode unattended on 14077.0 so best if we coordinate on
the sked page.

Quick Guide for Multipsk file / mail transfers.

1. Switch ALE-400 mode (Click ARQ FAE)
2. Click AUX FUNCTIONS
3. Place call sign in CALL-- box then click CALL--. This will connect you
to the other station.

An alternate to selectively calling / connecting to a specific station from
the AUX FUNCTIONS is to just click CQ button located in the middle of the
main window. Any station hearing your CQ will automatically connect. Make
sure the ARQ FAE buttons are pushed.

Reed Solomon Identifiers:

The RS ID's are located in the upper left side of the main program window
above the waterfall. These indentifiers will remain active once clicked.

RSID - this transmits the Reed Solomon mode identifier when clicked. It lets
others know what mode you are transmitting. In ALE400, the Reed Solomon ID
is automatically sent so this button stays in use.

RX RSID - when active, this button allows Multipsk to automatically switch
modes upon RSID reception.

RX CALL ID - activates the reception of the CALL ID allowing you to see the
other stations call sign and locator or CALL ID. It will appear inside the

Clicking the CALL ID button (located on the far left of side of the main
