Re: [digitalradio] More use of 30 metres

Mel, it makes sense to me. It seems that "wide" bandwidths are needed by
some modes under tough conditions but I am generally happy with modes that
take up as little room as possible.

[digitalradio] More use of 30 metres

2006-03-28 Thread Mel
Hello,

Just to clarify my comment that I don't like the idea of one wide
band mode taking up the space which is being USED, by at least 20 PSK
users. As I clearly said, at least six QSO's were wiped out.

Is that not sufficient reason ?

And other then them being a wide mode, the problem is ? ? ? ? ? ?

There should not be one. If the frequency is not in use that I say
have at it. I just love this thinking that some (most that never operated
RTTY, Packet, Pactor & Amtor ) every mode should be 500 Hz
or less.

Re: [digitalradio] More use of 30 metres

2006-03-27 Thread KV9U
Although I monitor 30 meters a fair amount, and call CQ from time to
time on digital modes, I don't work many stations. I did work a station
in FL in the last week who was using an attic loop. That QSO was Olivia
and would have been hard to maintain with most other modes. Had MFSK16
and DominoEX/FEC contacts recently as well. One of the stations (but I
don't remember who it was now) commented to me that 30 meters was THE
band for digital, but I have not found that to be the case from the
north midwest U.S.:)

There is a fair amount of Pactor and on the upper end are some users for
APRS running packet. We also have a frequent government? crypto station
in about the middle of the band, and then I have heard some 5 letter CW
stations. So I guess CW is not totally dead yet with "secret agents."

Down at the bottom of the band is around 15 KHz or so of spread out CW
Q's. Today we had some kind of major pileup but I don't know who the DX
was.

The main area that I work is 10130 to 10140. I sometimes put the dial on
10133 and call CQ up 1000 Hz in different modes.

I am not a big user of PSK31 due to no FEC and not being very robust
against difficult conditions, but it is very true that on the busy bands
they are amazingly compact. However, if someone TX over the top of even
one station, they are breaking the rules.

Rick, KV9U

[digitalradio] More use of 30 metres

2006-03-27 Thread Mel
Pleased to see that there is more encouragement for people to use 30
metres it has always been a rarely used band ever since the day it
was given to us. I remember when the only people who used were some
amateurs in France who used to chat to each other on phone.

Of course there were mumblings about the use of SSB, but better that
than no use. I think I also remember hearing Australians chatting as
well. Obviously the band wasn't being used for morse code so, what
the hell, just chat !

I make calls on the band using PSK31 but after half an hour, and
maybe a contact, I go where its a bit busier. I call regularly on 17
metres which is rarely used these days in Europe, and very often have
a contact with a Stateside station.

Can't say that I like this idea of filling up digital space with one
wide band digital mode where 20 PSK 31 users could be operating. Last
week I saw at least 6 QSO's wiped out when someone opened up on top
of them. Its a Gatling machine gun operation, kill off everything in
its path.

Kind Regards, Mel G0GQK
