receive every packet of both stations things go to hell in a hand basket pretty
quick.

The monitoring of other ping-pong and/or FEC protocols like ax.25,
arq-e, arq-e3, clover, and about 20 other types is old had.
So I cant see it as an insurmountable problem.
Sure there may be gaps but that is to be expected.

Now it's just a waiting game for someone with access to the specs, and
inclinations to write some software.

I sincerely hope it doesnt remain a closed and unmonitorable system for very
long.

You can monitor using Winmor's "MH" list. That way you will get a list
callsigns heard , but you will not see any traffic passed

example
2010/01/18 17:33:31 KM4Z 44 (EM73XW)
2010/01/18 15:57:26 NC5O 70 (EM12PX)
2010/01/18 14:07:43 I3FUE 40 ()

Other than that, all you will see if the callsign, occasionally, of people
making connnect requests.
