RE: [digitalradio] Anyone using a Cushcraft R5/ R7 on digital ?

2006-04-30 Thread r_lwesterfield

Try wrapping all lines into and out of the
sound card through one or more Type 43 powdered iron toroids. The toroids
tend to block RF and they are easy to wrap and inexpensive. All of the
major amateur retailers have these and expect to pay roughly three dollars a piece
for them. Buy 4-6 of em or so. Basically, the sound card
lines act as antennae and the toroids dissipate the alternating current
inherent in the stray RF from your vertical. Or is it that the mass increases
to infinity as you approach the speed of light. Just cannot
remember which J. Try the toroids . . . they worked for me.

I have an R7 and use if
on all bands. I do not get any RF into the
computer except for 80M.

I have the R7, and I was getting RF into the shack on 20, 17, and 15M.
I solved the problem by buying a bucketload ( literally! ) of ferrite
cores on ebay, and installing them on all the cables inside.

Re: [digitalradio] Anyone using a Cushcraft R5/ R7 on digital ?

2006-04-29 Thread KV9U

This is probably something that others have as a similar problem. I
currently have a trapped 10/80 meter inverted vee dipole over the house
with apex at 30 feet and it does cause some problems on 80 meters. When
I had the addition of a full size trapped 40/160 meter inverted vee
dipole (fed at the same point), I had problems on 160. I still have
problems on 80 meters with feedback triggering the ALC on the rig.

In the past I had a Cushcraft R7 on a tripod mount on the house and I
don't recall having problems on 40 to 10 meters. The R7 uses a toroid
core to act as a choke to prevent current flowing on the outside of coax
and this may help. Also, the pattern doesn't tend to go down toward the
ground as much as it does with a low band horizontal antenna.

I also have a ground mounted Butternut HF-9V vertical which has over 30
radials from 30 to 100 feet long. This antenna is located about 150 feet
from the house so it is quieter than other antennas since it doesn't
pick up the home RF. I do have two fencing energizers (6 Joule) for my
farm fencing which cause quite a bit of pulse noise, but the noise
blankers can generally handle them.

Because the vertical location has what I consider a very good radial
system on fairly good conductivity soil, I wanted to use it for 160. The
Butternut is too short to work well on that band due to efficiency and
bandwidth limitations, so I rigged up an L that is only about 20 feet
high on average and clips on to the feedpoint of the Butternut and
angles away toward the house. I was able to get better results with
some tests with nearby stations (50 miles) as well as longer distances
and so removed the dipole. The addition of the L does not seem to
affect the SWR or performance of the vertical and appears to be a
reasonable match on 60 meters as a bonus band since it is about 3/4
wavelength.

From my most recent tests, the vertical does not seem to cause any
problems on any bands but I am sure the major factor is that it is so
far from the house. It is not a very effective antenna on NVIS operation
for 80 meters so I still need the high angle radiation.

The only other solution that I had was to use a choke on the audio line
from the computer to the rig. I wrapped about 20 turns of the audio line
around a ferrite rod. This was an Amidon unit that I had in stock and is
about 7 and 1/2 inches long and half inch in diameter. The permeability
I think was 125 but I would have to find the data sheet on it to be
sure. I tried a large toroid core of unknown material, but had no luck
with half a dozen turns, thus the reason for trying out the rod.

All these tests were done mostly on my Icom 756 Pro 2 which seems to be
more susceptible to RF issues although I have not tested this thoroughly
with my other two rigs (Ten Tec Pegasus and Kenwood TS440SAT). Many
years ago, I used to run the 440 on Amtor and even Pactor before they
shut down the Aplink/Winlink system and I don't recall having RF issues,
but that was mostly on the higher bands.

Rick, KV9U
