Re: [digitalradio] Windows Vista for digital mode soundcard applications ?
Hey, Andy - My Info -= Acer Aspire M5461 Pentium Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.2Ghz 2.2 Ghz RAM 4 Gb OS 64-bit SP1 Vista Home Premium I'm using Ham Radio Deluxe/DM780, Airmail, I've used Multipsk, and tried PC-ALE. I also have EasyPal working but, in MY case, the software won't let me do a couple of functions while using VISTA 64. Specifically, creating waterfall text or pictures. The only other issue I did have was a lack of backward compatibility with PK-232 software, XPwin, that I used on an older XP computer before it crashed three months ago, or so. Otherwise, I've had no major issues whatsoever, in MY case. I am in the market for a new PC to be used in my shack. I have found a few good deals, some with Vista as the OS. There are some with XP but I was wondering about a switch to Vista. My main applications would be Ham Radio Deluxe, Multipsk, FL-Digi, DX Lab , Microham device router, PC-ALE, and WSJT. Anyone know if any of these applications have issues with Vista ?

I've used HRD(+DM780), fldigi, most of the DXLab suite and WSJT with no issues so far. Hope that helps and 73, Sean - VA5LF

I found a program that helped with XP and some DOS programs, but I don't know if it would work OK in Vista: DOSBox. You could Google for it and find out if it may help. 73, Jose, CO2JA VI Conferencia Internacional de Energía Renovable, Ahorro de Energía y Educación Energética 9 - 12 de Junio 2009, Palacio de las Convenciones ...Por una cultura energética sustentable www.ciercuba.com

DXLab applications work fine on Vista as long as you install and run while logged into the account named Administrator. Re: [digitalradio] Windows Vista for digital mode soundcard applications ?
Thoughts on Vista and other OS's: Several years ago, I took a chance and bought an HP Pavilion a1730n tower with Vista. It is fairly powerful with AMD 4600+, reasonable nVidia video chipset and a couple Gig of RAM. My plan was to use Linux if it did not pan out. What happened was actually the reverse since Linux proved to be quite disappointing with my hardware. Since there were programs that did not run correctly or at all on Vista, particularly some of my ham programs, I left them on my other computer, a lesser emachines tower that is shared with peripherals using a KVM switch. As you surely have heard, the common wisdom is that Vista is a terrible operating system which everyone dislikes. The reality is a bit different when viewed from the middle path and must be compared with alternatives: - Initially, there were some annoying problems, but the ham programs with active developers were able to get their software to work well with Vista and some even discovered a flaw in Vista from my experience. After SP1, things have been quite good now. - Contrary to claims I hear from people who likely have no clue about and who don't even use Vista, I did not find it to crash at any time. Actually, I don't recall XP ever doing that either, HI. - It has increased security that is annoying to some because it makes you have to enter passwords at times in order for programs to be installed or file manipulation. Similar to Linux et al. - Microsoft recommends not running in Administrator for most activities which greatly increases security, similar to Linux et al. - Unrealistic expectation by Microsoft that all new computers will be much more powerful, but Moore's Law seems to have reached the end of the doubling of computer power every 18 months or so. There are some bottlenecks such as reading and moving files that I find barely tolerable. This may be fixed in Win 7, but I don't know for sure. - All my ham programs run well on Vista, but you may have a legacy application that has no support to upgrade to work on Vista and that should be taken into consideration. I tend to prefer the way the sound interface works. XP was absolutely terrible with a non-intuitive screen to switch between incoming and outgoing streams. - Because of the (mis)perceptions about Vista, Microsoft has pushed very hard to develop the updated Windows 7 version. The reviews on the beta have been surprisingly good. They may risk reducing (optional) security with the change to the UAC, but you can still have Vista level protection if you choose it. Win7 appears to be a Vista Lite but I don't know if they removed the DRM control which I consider to be extremely unwise on the part of Microsoft. With the discontinuance of MP3 DRM in the past few weeks, maybe we will see some reduction in DRM overall, but make no mistake, DRM has actually increased security problems due to DRM exploits from from trojans. The best thing to do is get this absolutely insane crap out of any OS. But overall, Vista is one of the most satisfying OS's that I have personally used. I have used computers for many years beginning with Commodores and Apple //e and then MS-DOS, Windows 2.11, through to the present and including a number of Linux variants. If you can possibly hold off (6 months?), you might want to wait until they have a deal where you can buy a Vista machine, but you get a free copy of Win7 when it becomes available. The new information on upgrades makes it look like it will be very easy for Vista users to do this via the internet in a few minutes. Need a clean install for XP though: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_skus.asp 73, Rick, KV9U Andrew O'Brien wrote: I am in the market for a new PC to be used in my shack. Hi, If you wait until June (or July?) to buy a new PC with Vista installed, you will get a free upgrade to Windows 7, which will replace Vista later this year. If you buy now, the upgrade is not free. Just something else to chew on b4 making your decision about a new computer. 73 Buddy WB4M - Original Message - From: Andrew O'Brien k3uka...@gmail.com To: digitalradio@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2009 7:58 AM Subject: [digitalradio] Windows Vista for digital mode soundcard applications ?
