I have had apps disappear on Android. One was evernote, but I just
reloaded it. Another issue I found with Android, is that when I place an
icon on the screen, and I move the data for that app to the SD card to
free up memory (using supertoolbox) if the SD card is unloaded (when
plugging in to a computer) it disappears. The app remains, just the icon
on one of the screens.

Hi All,

I first learned about PostgreSQL from this list a few years back. We
use it at work now and I love it. One of my coworkers (he's the lone
mac guy, I'm the lone gnu/linux guy) sent me this video. Interesting
comparison of different databases. MySQL is more broken than I had
realized. Check it out.

I have used these at several places with good results. And for this

PostgreSQL is one of the greatest open source projects. As a database,
it is my default choice. In fact, unless there is a really strong reason
to choose something else, PostgreSQL is what you use.

My choices typically are this:

small zero configuration, sqlite.
shared database postgresql.

Oracle is the client does not like open source. Two reasons, if money is
no object, then this is no problem. If money is an issue, I can posh
PostgreSQL. Not, btw, because I'm a fan boy, but because it is easier to
get the work done.

[Discuss] Verizon and their mandatory data plan, redux

2012-07-21 Thread Jerry Natowitz
Looked into other carriers. Problem is, one of our phone is about 15
months into a 24 month contract. Would cost about $100 to cancel. Then
there would be costs of new phones if we didn't stay on CDMA, and the
fees for setting up new accounts, and then finally the monthly fees.

We might have been able to save a few dollars, but the hassle factor
didn't make it worth it. That, and T-Mobile, the logical choice, has
really bad service in South Brookline. What really clinched the deal
was finding that we can get a 22% discount on the $79.99 portion of our

monthly bill because of my employer.

That said, I did find something interesting: smartphones released before
November 14th, 2008 can be activated without a data plan
http://www.plazor.com/howto/how-to-activate-smartphone-on-verizon-without-data-plan/

Unfortunately my daughter didn't want any of them. So I bought a new
Verizon Palm Pre 2 on amazon.com for about $90 and, aside from some
weirdness like Verizon's Backup not working on it, she is quite happy.

[Discuss] HDTV's as a computer monitor

2012-07-21 Thread Doug
Can it be done? Should it be done? I saw a 36" Sony WEGA HDTV 1080i
available on Craigs list. My 28" Hanns-G probably roasted a capacitor
somewhere and now the screen washes out for large sections. BIG is
good, but computer monitors stop in the the 28" range. Anyone using
an HDTV for their computer monitor? I have a mac mini.

I've connected a computer to my 32" HDTV to watch netflix and youtube.
It's fine for that, but as far as doing email or text editing, you
either have to sit too close to see the whole screen or too far to see
text at normal sizes.

I'm not saying it's impossible to imagine a setup where it would work,
but I didn't achieve one in the few hours I spent with it (admittedly
not trying very hard).

Wouldn't that put you at a rather oblique angle to the edges of the
screen? I always thought the advantage of 2 smaller monitors was that they
could be placed at an angle to each other, do that your eyes were closer
to perpendicular to each monitor as you looked at it.

I did for a while. The problem with using a TV set is that you get a
30-40" screen with the same resolution as you get on a 17" notebook. In
other words, a HDTV set is great for watching TV and stuff from 6-12
feet away but it really sucks for typical computer use at 2-3 feet.

I picked up a 13-inch HDMI monitor last year to use on an Efika MX Smarttop,
and I found that it clipped the edges of the display so that I could
not see the
menubar at the top of the screen or the panel at the bottom of the screen.

I never tried it on another HDMI display, so I'm unsure if this was a problem
specific to the 13-inch display, or if this is typical of all HDTV
displays that
are designed primarily for use as TVs.

That's caused by the overscan region, an idea that dates back to CRTs
that for some reason TV manufacturers insist on configuring on LCD
HDTVs. Some screens can turn off overscan, some can't -- we have a 60"
Sony LCD HDTV we use instead of a projector in a meeting room, and had
to dig very deep into the menus to turn off overscan on the HDMI inputs
(I think the option was "Pixel-for-pixel" under Zoom or something) while
a cheap Dynatek (sp?) 40" TV we bought at Best Buy doesn't have an
option to turn overscan off.

(This has been a headache for the Raspberry Pi, since it's often used
with HDTVs - a config file had to be provided to allow overscan
adjustments).
