K-9 worked perfectly a few years back, not known what had changed since
then. But it clearly shouldn't hang the way it does.

I've looked at other e-mail apps and really haven't found one yet that
suits my needs. The one I'm using currently (mail.com), by default, sends
e-mails as text/html, which I learned the BLU list server blocks, if I
understood Jerry correctly.

OH, I agree, which is why the new key, but it turns out GPG injection is
possible, so someone could do it. Yeah, he¹s trying to starup, but it¹s

Anyway, Yes, Thunderbird has support on desktop. GPG Suite plugs in a
bunch. I still don¹t understand why chromium doesn¹t support plugins at

It does GPG injection of Outlook and Google, the dev is also SUPER SUPER
responsive, thought not open to relicensing the code.

Good point.

I don't dare use Android for anything sensitive, it is too big a target,
too weakly secured. I use NO Android banking apps. (Were I an Apple
type, same answer.)

Actually, I do use a cheap and very off-brand Android phone for
sensitive stuff--but I keep it /incommunicado/. I have never put a SIM
in it (it came from Hong Kong, it is all international, it has two SIM
slots!). I have never let it connect to the internet. So I don't need to
trust it so much.

But my daily phone and Nexus 7 tablet? No way I will type any sensitive
passwords on either of them.

My e-mail? Not so sensitive. I don't bother to encrypt messages.

If I had really sensitive e-mail, how would I do that? An interesting
question. It would depend on the details: What am I doing that is so
damn special and who might be after it? How hard might they try? How
much money do they have to spend, how good is the sound proofing where
they keep the $5 wrenches (https://xkcd.com/538/)?

There is a general-purpose good reason to encrypt e-mail: to make life
harder for the spies. More encrypted traffic means more inaccessible hay
for them to stack up in frustration.

That's because Gmail's labels aren't folders and don't quite act like
folders. You'll have similar quirky behavior with any IMAP client, not
just Thunderbird.

K-9 Mail with OpenKeychain.

Don't use APG. It's effectively unmaintained with known security
vulnerabilities which have gone unfixed for several years.

Actually, I suggest not using Android at all in this capacity. Android
is not a secure, reliable platform.

AFIK, the only mail client on Android that works with APG (and a few
others) is K-9. I did try out K-9 a few years ago but went back to the
gmail app. It is worth another try.

I use K-9 Mail on Android a little, it doesn't do any spam filtering,
and that gets overwhelming, so I don't use it much.

It seems willing to talk to APG for its PGP service, which I have
installed, but haven't tried it.

[Discuss] GPG encryption and gmail

2016-08-31 Thread Jerry Feldman
As we are nearing the September GPG key signing party, I was wondering if
anyone has tried out webmail packages like mailvelope and other browser
extensions for gmail.

I know that clients like Thunderbird and Evolution do it.

I'm weaning away from Thunderbird for a few reasons, but I don't like the
way Thunderbird handles folders with respect to gmail's labels.

Also, I have not looked into encrypting emails in Android yet.
