I'll only answer this part since the Ubuntu machine I use at work is on
a wire and I'm not using its default user interface (Unity). At home I
use other things (Slackware and OpenBSD) and again not with wireless
only with an ethernet cable. So someone else will be better at directing
you to where to find error messages in the UI to diagnose better.

You can type that sudo command by first running a program named
gnome-terminal (or xterm or maybe some other programs with terminal in
the name). If I remember rightly in Ubuntu/Unity it's in the menu, maybe
only labeled as "terminal" or "gterminal". If you've ever used the
MS-DOS prompt in Windows it's kind of like that. When it comes up you
can type the command there. I assume you mean the command...

sudo service network-manager restart

That's pretty safe to type in. While the "sudo" part does make the
command run as root (with superuser or admin privileges), a plausible
typo in the rest of the command isn't going to cause anything beyond an
error message being spat out. There are things you could type after the
sudo part that would cause severe damage but you wouldn't realistically
do that by accident trying to type this command. After you type it in
you'll be asked for a password. You enter the password of your Ubuntu
user.

The problem the people in that thread were having may be your problem
but then again yours may be something else. They saw their issue waking
up the computer from sleep. Did your wireless work initially under
Ubuntu but then go away after putting the machine to sleep? Other
possibilities...

1. Linux, or Ubuntu in particular, doesn't support your wireless card.
If you can tell us more about the hardware you're using someone may be
able to help determine this or rule it out as a cause.

2. Some cards Linux only supports with the assistance of something
called firmware that gets loaded when the system starts up. I don't have
much experience with wireless firmware under Linux and none with Ubuntu
so maybe someone else can help here if they consider it a potential
sticking point.

3. Something more pedestrian like your wireless password not being typed
in correctly?

I have had problems with WIFI waking from SUSPEND with 16.04 with one
laptop.
(and with a prior version with another laptop! Both Lenovo T61's.)

Don't know if that's your issue but mentioning it just in case.
(And i may try the suggested sudo restart on that one, thanks )

Re: [Discuss] Ubuntu 16.04 Wifi Connection Disappeared

2017-01-03 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, everyone. Thank you for your great replies! I hope this additional
detail is useful. (Yep, means problem not solved yet.)

Greg:

I followed your numbered steps, which were great, through #3. At #4, I see
your screenshot. However, the list on the left contains only two items:

Wired
Network proxy

Airplane Mode is off, but there is no Wireless item on the right, and no
wireless networks are listed.

Greg and Mike: I opened the terminal window and entered this command:

sudo service network-manager restart

I put in my password.

For a while, a handy Enable Wi-Fi option appeared in a menu at the top of
the window. I clicked it! But still, it didn't discover my local wi-fi
network, so I thought, "I'll reboot, and when it loads up, it will find my
Wi-Fi network, and all will be well."

Alas, it was not to be. Instead, the Enable Wi-Fi option disappeared once
again from the list, and of course my local network was not listed among
the wi-fi networks.

So, I was back to square one.

Mike, I have a Toshiba Satellite. After a little googling about identifying
my wireless card, I ran lspci in the terminal window, and I'm seeing:

network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 (rev cb)
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)

Is this the information you were looking for? Ubuntu 14.nn on this laptop
linked successfully to the Internet for quite a while. But maybe Ubuntu
16.04 could have problems with the same networking card?

As a last thought, I've rebooted numerous times, so even if I messed up my
password a time or two, I don't think I could have messed it up every time.

Thank you all so much. If there's more information that would help, ask
away. If you can think of any next steps I should try, I'm all ears!

A lot of laptops include a shut off for the wireless in the form of a
function key or a physical switch. It may be worth checking for that.

I'm looking at this webpage, which looked promising. Why does it want me to
download a driver?

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/disable-wireless-toshiba-satellite-52666.html

The Fn-F8 key combo is not doing anything, unfortunately. Fn-F12 (which
looks like an oldfashioned glass thermometer with the bulb on top) turns on
and off the Bluetooth icon.

Dang.

I wonder if I will have to wait until the next BLU installfest to get it
working. Computers are great when they work.

What did I doo!

Another thing you can try to rule out hardware issues is to boot a "Live
CD" of Ubuntu and see if you can get connected to WiFi with that.

(The install media (CD or USB drive) you used to install Ubuntu can be
used as a Live CD by choosing the "try Ubuntu" option instead of the
install option at the first menu.)

Try the nmtui command and variants see if that gets you any traction.

Tried it. Error message flashed : Disconnected -- you are now offline.

Clicked the windshield wiper triangle icon. Enable Networking is selected.

Hi Nancy

FWIW you can try "rfkill list" in the terminal. If it seems your wireless card
is soft blocked, "rfkill unblock" (possibly followed by "sudo service
network-manager restart") might help.

https://linux.die.net/man/1/rfkill

Re: [Discuss] Ubuntu 16.04 Wifi Connection Disappeared

2017-01-04 Thread Jerry Feldman

Hi Nancy,
Can you post your laptop brand and model.

Clicked the windshield wiper triangle icon. Enable Networking is selected.
There is no option to enable wifi.

Have you stumbled across this yet? I guess this behavior is well known.
Try the nmtui command and variants see if that gets you any traction.

I'm looking at this webpage, which looked promising. Why does it want me
to
download a driver?

The Fn-F8 key combo is not doing anything, unfortunately. Fn-F12 (which
looks like an oldfashioned glass thermometer with the bulb on top) turns
on
and off the Bluetooth icon.

Dang.

I wonder if I will have to wait until the next BLU installfest to get it
working. Computers are great when they work.

What did I doo!

A lot of laptops include a shut off for the wireless in the form of a
function key or a physical switch. It may be worth checking for that.

Hi, everyone. Thank you for your great replies! I hope this additional
detail is useful. (Yep, means problem not solved yet.)

Greg:

I followed your numbered steps, which were great, through #3. At #4, I

see

your screenshot. However, the list on the left contains only two items:

Wired
Network proxy

Airplane Mode is off, but there is no Wireless item on the right, and

no

wireless networks are listed.

Greg and Mike: I opened the terminal window and entered this command:

 sudo service network-manager restart

I put in my password.

For a while, a handy Enable Wi-Fi option appeared in a menu at the top

of

the window. I clicked it! But still, it didn't discover my local wi-fi
network, so I thought, "I'll reboot, and when it loads up, it will

find my

Wi-Fi network, and all will be well."

Alas, it was not to be. Instead, the Enable Wi-Fi option disappeared

once

again from the list, and of course my local network was not listed

among

the wi-fi networks.

So, I was back to square one.

Mike, I have a Toshiba Satellite. After a little googling about
identifying
my wireless card, I ran lspci in the terminal window, and I'm seeing:

network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 (rev cb)
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

RTL8111/8168/8411PCI

Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)

Is this the information you were looking for? Ubuntu 14.nn on this

laptop

linked successfully to the Internet for quite a while. But maybe Ubuntu
16.04 could have problems with the same networking card?

As a last thought, I've rebooted numerous times, so even if I messed

up my

password a time or two, I don't think I could have messed it up every
time.

Thank you all so much. If there's more information that would help, ask
away. If you can think of any next steps I should try, I'm all ears!

Don't know if that's your issue but mentioning it just in case.
(And i may try the suggested sudo restart on that one, thanks )
