The migration to the Cloud seems quite interesting and fit for a general
 discussion list ;)
Its actually quite funny I was thinking of offering something in the
cloud with a web based version of LO to my clients where they would
rent a virtual private server for the office and login or use the
web version to do their work respectivley.

Currently I develop a Cloud-Service and I have already asked for a Web-
Version of OOo or LO... ;-)

I do exactly the same as you... =8O

And believe it, I know several 100 other peoples (most IT selfemployed)
which do the same as we. It is time to get a working Web-Version

I just want to write in as a consultant and end-user, to point out
several of the major benefits of forums over mailing lists that I
have not noticed yet in this discussion: mainly --visibility,
 persistence and searchability

Mailinglists Archives are widely mirrort and searchable too

I am actually a fan of the mailman software used to run this list
and have hosted several email lists using mailman (and, before that,
majordomo). However, i find that whereas email lists are better for
discussions like this one, web forums make more sense for official
and/or community support. For software I use that has web -based
support forums, I almost always can find that the question I have
has already been asked and answered by someone else, or that the
problem I wish to report has already been supported.

If you've ever tried searching in mailman archives to see if your
question has already been posted answered, it is an exercise in
 total frustration.

FUD

Another thing: once I'm on a web forum, if I have time I start
poking through the categories to pick out topics of interest and i
learn so much about the forum. And another thing: effectively
moderated forums will have a FAQ section so that rather than the
regular participants having to answer the same questions over and
over they can simply point to the FAQ.

Web-Forums areheavy target of spamers... Iknow many of them which where
hijacked by PE and asian electronic sellers and such...

For those who complain of the bandwidth and time entailed in loading
 web pages:

There is this little thing called RSS, it's been around for a couple
 of years ;-) ...

It tells nothing... (experience)

Forgotten one thing:

As a developer, I have always my MUA open in one of m screens and I see,
when I new message, maybe for me important, came in.

Also I see immediately Subjects: I am interested in or I like to help.

This is not possibel on Web-Forums which you have to reload all 35 mins
and then of course have to walk through all Sub-Forums pages.

This is WHY it is not reliabel for peoples which like to support the
community.

Note: I am owner of more then 180 mailinglists which I manage my own,
but as a Web-Forum it would require at least 10-15 peoples here.

What about paying for support?

Coming back to the call for a forum, why not let the users decide how they

Maybe yo should go and hire some PROs which do there Job in the Forum?

For whatever reason normal people do not use mailing lists nor irc
 channels.

Hmmm, do you mean I am not normal? - This is discrimination!

This people who arrives to that get-help page searching for
help with their problems will not find solutions on an easy way. And
people who cannot find a solution on an easy way will not use a
 product.

I do not use thos crapy forums, because I have to search to long for it.
It is NON reliabel and slow. Do not belive I want to give a searchengine
any infos about me, because I need help with a stupid program.

Mailinglists are the fastest way to get help, because the Real Helpers
use all mail to communicate faster and easier!

Only some non-well-educated noobs use searchengine+forum!

NNTP and MAIL exist since 30 years with success!

Is everything about trust: people will trust a product not because
they can use it for free (people usually do not consider idealogical
issues like file formats nor open code when choosing their solutions),
usually they only look if that software can solve their *immediate*
problem on an easy way. And that of course include how they get help
 when they have a problem.

Mailinglist are the way to go! I am volunter on some mailinglistst and
I definitively would not do it, if I have to use forums on my TabletPC.

get an answer there, we trust the people who maintain that board so
use it with confidence and good luck you will help a lot more people.

You can pay peoples to maintain this board and of course the costs for
maintenance of such server which is much higher then a mailinglist.

Yeah, thats sound perfectly, because stupid users click on anything

 3. Considering that the vast majority - over 99% most likely - of users
