[tdf-discuss] Feature Request: Locking pages

2011-11-13 Thread Pad Ster
I had an idea for a feature in LibreOffice.

Locking text to a page, or locking a page. So, if you want something on one
page, and for it not to move down when you add something to a page above.
If you run out of room on the page above it could add another page in, or
something.

[tdf-discuss] feature request help, styles management

2011-09-20 Thread e-letter
Readers,

This question concerns how to improve management of styles between
writer and impress modules. Please read the following previous thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/users@global.libreoffice.org/msg10780.html

Would appreciate some guidance to make progress, in terms of how to
make a suitable feature request.

Thanks.

[tdf-discuss] Feature Request: Mac Osx Lion

Hi,

I was wondering if Libreoffice would implement an auto save feature in
os x lion and full screen app support, or maybe an auto save feature
that is similar but it can also be Implemented in other operating

By the way, I am using the auto save options in libreoffice. They do
work 99% of when I don't loose a document is the one percent where
saving a document and knowing you don't need to save it because you
know it will be their when you open the office suite again and then
you can save it to a folder or somewhere else, and you will always
know that it is saved every single character of it 100%.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice before it have had an auto save function
built in for years. It is so completely integrated that many users are
not even aware of it. I believe that it is set to auto save every 5

[tdf-discuss] Feature request

I've a request for a new feature/improvement: in the default paths is
not possible to set different paths for the different type of

documents are stored in different path depending on the type, and is a
little annoying change by hand the path every time one use a different

2011-04-15 Thread Jason Corfman
I'll throw in a feature request/improvement of my own, since the
conversation title is rather unambiguous.

Unlike most (not all) LibreOffice feature requests that are inspired by
Microsoft Office, mine is inspired by GIMP.

I was working with a .xcf file in GIMP the other day, and it came time for
me to export it. I went to File-Save As and changed the name from file.xcf
to file.jpg and hit enter. Without me selecting .jpg from the list of file
types, I got the jpg dialogue boxes (flatten image? Image quality, etc.),
and it saved as a .jpg file, not as a .xcf file with a .jpg extension. Other
than changing the extension on the file name, I didn't tell it to change the
file type, it just knew.

If I tried opening file.odt file in LibreOffice and did a save as and saved
it with the name of file.doc without also changing the file type, I'd get an
ODF file with a .doc file extension.

Is there anyway of utilizing GIMP's Save As file extension recognition?
That way, we would probably get less document.odt saved with a .doc file
extension.

(Feel free to replace .doc with the favorite non-ODF file extension of your
choice. I'm not trying to start a Microsoft file format flame war, I'm just
using examples that I use.)

I should add that I don't want to change the default file format. I like ODF
as my default. But occasionally, I have to save files in non-ODF format.

[tdf-discuss] Feature request - embed font

2011-03-14 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi.
I have been a SO, OO, now LO user for many years.
One area where I frequently encounter hassle is with layout changes due
to different fonts on different PC's. Most of my documents are data
sheets or manuals and include special fonts (LCD display, etc.) and even
with standard fonts there can be problems.
It would be very usefull if there was an option to embed a font in a
document.

Most recently I deleted my Arial font off my Mac and installed the Arial
from my Suse because the Mac Arial had different characters and kerning.

Embedding a font is a big bonus for a suite that wants to be truly
system portable.

[tdf-discuss] Feature request: Improve administrative installation on Windows

2011-02-23 Thread Leif Lodahl
Hi all,
I'm currently working on a large scale implementation of LibreOffice. We are
talking about 10.000+ users.

One thing I have discovered is that the current multi language installation
requires quite some extra effort to accomplish our goals.

The default installation implements a large number of languages with English
as the default. I thought it was supposed to default the Windows
locale/language settings but it seems that it doesn't work. Another thing is
that most of the machines are quite small and we would like to economize
with disk space.

To obtain only one language installed requires manipulation of the msi
package (or by the use of a mst transformation file). Next upgrade will
require that we once again create new msi files or mst files.

An alternative solution is to install all the languages and then control the
default language using an extension.

We managed to install what we wanted, but it seems to me that it could be
done easier. The installation mechanism supports parameters in the
installation but the LibreOffice msi packages doesn't take these parameters
to control language(s) to install.

I would like to propose that the current Windows installation mechanism gets
a makeover with the focus on administrative installation and administration
of thousands of computers. Easy administration (or at least not difficult
administration) is one of many decision parameters when a solution is
selected. Currently I believe that LibreOffice is one of the most
complicated in the marked.

Just my two cents :-)

Cheers,
Leif Lodahl

Mmh, I don't know a solution for this. Sorry :-\

But since Impress usually supports jumping to other (hidden) slides in
the presentation in any case, this might be required ... even if you
exclude (e.g.) slide 5, you can change to slide 5 by 5 ENTER (another
feature important for some other users). To solve this, it requires a

The second missing feature is support for automatic ToC- and
Index-Tables as they are implemented so nicely in Writer.

What is your opinion? Do you agree that these two features could be
helpful for others?

I think yes - do you know whether there are issues (request) for this at
OOo or LibreOffice? This might help to evaluate how much this is
requested by others as well.

Regards,
Christoph

After digging around, I think, I should be able to program the needed
features (ToC, slide numbers matching custom slide show) on my own.

I would prefer to use Python and PyUNO for this.

Before I start, I would like to ask the list for giving me feedback for
the following questions:
1. For generating a ToC I need to store somewhere, if the title should
appear in the ToC or not.

Where can I store this information?
I found the Description and the Name tags I could use but I fear,
that this will interact with other software also using these tags...

2. Maybe I want to add also an alphabetical Index linking to the most
important keywords at the end of the presentation (remember, people will
get a printed version of the slide show).
Where can I store the information, that a specific word should appear in
this Index? You know I see problem with using Description and Name
tags. For an index it is again more complicate since a word itself has
no Description tag.
Using the Description tag of the object, in which the text appears,
gives the problem, that deleting the text does not automatically delete
the entry -- How can I detect in that case, that the word is deleted
except doing a rescan all the time?

3. Is Python/PyUNO the good choice for programming this feature in
Impress? Can you tell me Pro´s and Con´s?

4. What´s about the needed skills? Do you think, this project is
feasible for someone who made up to now only very small standalone apps
just for fun in Python?

Thanks for your remarks

Re: [Libreoffice] Fwd: [tdf-discuss] feature request, calc cell content copy behaviour

2011-02-12 Thread Simon Cropper

Kohei,

The behaviour that I am talking about is...
1. Insert value into A1, select the cell with the mouse so it is
highlighted then copy with Ctrl-C
2. Select 3 or more other cells -- NOT in a continuous block (e.g. B2
and C3).
3. Try and paste with Ctrl-V and you will get the error Insert into
multiple selection not possible

I checked and this functionality has been available since Excel 2000.

Cheers Simon

Actually in Excel when you copy A1, A3, A5 then paste to A7, it pastes
to A7:A9. Calc does the same thing.

So, I'm not sure what feature is being requested here. Can you clarify
a bit?

Hi Christophe,
thanks for your fast reply!
There are several things I miss with the Insert - Summary Slide feature:
1. As far as I know it does not show the slide number
2. It is not so handy in usage, that the Summary Slide contents is based on
the selected slides, specially if you presentation contains up to 200 slides (the Summary
should contain only the chapter slides, not each).
3. It is not dynamic. Since the presentation lives, very often we add slides,
move them or delete some. That would mean, we have to create then always a new summary
slide manually by collecting the title slides and must reformat it again ...

Before asking on this list, I searched the Internet for a solution for my issues. I found
a lot of similar requests from OOo and PowerPoint users. But it's hard for
me, to give a number.
Microsoft Support team created a VBA Macro to adress the page number on custom
slide show issue in PowerPoint. So it seems, there are more people asking for it.

[tdf-discuss] Feature request for LibreOffice Impress

2011-01-22 Thread Chynte

Hi,
after following this mailing list for a while, today I want to ask for
your opinion about two features I miss in Impress.

The first feature is linked to the custom slide shows. To avoid several
sildes with the same content, I use one big file as a container for
all slides I need. Using custom slide shows allows then creating the
topic depended slideshows I need. The problem is, that the automatic
page side numbering is not able to handle custom slide shows.
That means, that the page numbering of the slides are also used in the
custom slide show. So you will see eg. after page 3 page 7 in the custom
slide show. Since years I found no solution for this. I tried to create
a makro but this is much harder for me than I thought in the beginning.
Would be nice, if this feature would be also useful for others so that
it makes sence to ask for an implementation in Impress.

The second missing feature is support for automatic ToC- and
Index-Tables as they are implemented so nicely in Writer.

Why do I think, I need these two features?
The silde shows I´m creating, having very often 100 to 200 slides. The
topics are different but all refers about the same thing - so many slide
are the same. To avoid versioning problems, the solution is the custom
slide show.
There are lot of people saying, that page numbers are bad style in slide
shows. Maybe, but the attendees of my presentation always get a printed
version of it to allow making notices. I tried without page numbers, but
the trainees were not happy, because finding the good page when restart
after a break is not easy is 200 slides without page numbers. So, in my
mind, there is no other way for me than with page numbers.
Since the slide show is also used as something like a reference guide
or documentation, the trainees use it for their daily work. Therefore,
having ToC and an alphabetical Index about the main keywords would be
very helpful for them.

Now maybe someone will say, Impress is not the tool for this, use X or Y.
I tried several other software, but all I tested having more holes than
Impress has:
Writer is not good in creating slides and for presentation stuff - which
is not surprising since it is made for documents containing mostly text.
Scribus could be a choice- but does not support custom slide shows and
having each page as a single file and create one master file which embed
the single files is not supported (or to say it better, I was not able
to get it work).
LaTeX - Allows many things I need, but drawing is painful and since
the slide show must also be used by my collegues, programming the
presentation is not possible.

What is your opinion? Do you agree that these two features could be
helpful for others?
Can you give me ideas, how to solve these issues in another way (I
prefer in Impress but other software suggestions are also welcomed)?

Chynte

BTW: Congratulations for this nice mailing list. The spirit here is very
friendly. I followed a lot of mailing lists in my life and I can tell
you very often it more a war than a discussion ...

I am pretty sure that there won't be any changes like that going into
the 3.3 branch anymore, as even the UI strings have been frozen now.

THis is pretty much stabilization phase with the exciting stuff going on
in the master development branch.
