LibreOffice and OpenOffice before it have had an auto save function
built in for years. It is so completely integrated that many users are
not even aware of it. I believe that it is set to auto save every 5
minutes by default.

I'll throw in a feature request/improvement of my own, since the
conversation title is rather unambiguous.

Unlike most (not all) LibreOffice feature requests that are inspired by
Microsoft Office, mine is inspired by GIMP.

I was working with a .xcf file in GIMP the other day, and it came time for
me to export it. I went to File-Save As and changed the name from file.xcf
to file.jpg and hit enter. Without me selecting .jpg from the list of file
types, I got the jpg dialogue boxes (flatten image? Image quality, etc.),
and it saved as a .jpg file, not as a .xcf file with a .jpg extension. Other
than changing the extension on the file name, I didn't tell it to change the
file type, it just knew.

If I tried opening file.odt file in LibreOffice and did a save as and saved
it with the name of file.doc without also changing the file type, I'd get an
ODF file with a .doc file extension.

Is there anyway of utilizing GIMP's Save As file extension recognition?
That way, we would probably get less document.odt saved with a .doc file
extension.

(Feel free to replace .doc with the favorite non-ODF file extension of your
choice. I'm not trying to start a Microsoft file format flame war, I'm just
using examples that I use.)

I should add that I don't want to change the default file format. I like ODF
as my default. But occasionally, I have to save files in non-ODF format.

If you use the KDE file dialogs for libreoffice it does this already.
I think it is a standard feature in KDE file dialogs.

After digging around, I think, I should be able to program the needed
features (ToC, slide numbers matching custom slide show) on my own.

I would prefer to use Python and PyUNO for this.

Before I start, I would like to ask the list for giving me feedback for
the following questions:
1. For generating a ToC I need to store somewhere, if the title should
appear in the ToC or not.

Where can I store this information?
I found the Description and the Name tags I could use but I fear,
that this will interact with other software also using these tags...

2. Maybe I want to add also an alphabetical Index linking to the most
important keywords at the end of the presentation (remember, people will
get a printed version of the slide show).
Where can I store the information, that a specific word should appear in
this Index? You know I see problem with using Description and Name
tags. For an index it is again more complicate since a word itself has
no Description tag.
Using the Description tag of the object, in which the text appears,
gives the problem, that deleting the text does not automatically delete
the entry -- How can I detect in that case, that the word is deleted
except doing a rescan all the time?

3. Is Python/PyUNO the good choice for programming this feature in
Impress? Can you tell me Pro´s and Con´s?

4. What´s about the needed skills? Do you think, this project is
feasible for someone who made up to now only very small standalone apps
just for fun in Python?

Thanks for your remarks

Hi Christophe,
thanks for your fast reply!
There are several things I miss with the Insert - Summary Slide feature:
1. As far as I know it does not show the slide number
2. It is not so handy in usage, that the Summary Slide contents is based on
the selected slides, specially if you presentation contains up to 200 slides (the Summary
should contain only the chapter slides, not each).
3. It is not dynamic. Since the presentation lives, very often we add slides,
move them or delete some. That would mean, we have to create then always a new summary
slide manually by collecting the title slides and must reformat it again ...

Before asking on this list, I searched the Internet for a solution for my issues. I found
a lot of similar requests from OOo and PowerPoint users. But it's hard for
me, to give a number.
Microsoft Support team created a VBA Macro to adress the page number on custom
slide show issue in PowerPoint. So it seems, there are more people asking for it.

I am pretty sure that there won't be any changes like that going into

THis is pretty much stabilization phase with the exciting stuff going on
