[IxDA Discuss] Task based UI / Multiple Workspace Views

2009-11-11 Thread Brett Christenson
I am working on a UI design that will unify what used to require 3
separate applications. The problem that I am having is in initial
sketches I am seeing issues with context switching. I would like to
explore using workspace views or something similar to Eclipse
Perspectives.
I find that MS Outlook has similar notion I would like to explore as
UI changes when emailing, scheduling, managing tasks...
Anyone know of other examples of UI with this type of behavior?
Specifically I am looking for examples that display more fluid way of
switching in and out of different views.

Thanks - Brett C

Re: [IxDA Discuss] read, 3 Things Phone Manufacturers Should Get Right to Beat the iPhone

2009-11-11 Thread Doug Brown
I think apps (or only one app) and good marketing can kill the cult of
iPhone. The iPhone itself will continue to be around. It's a good phone. The
cult of personality around it is what people are really talking about when
they say "kill the iPhone" though.

Verizon is currently doing a good job with giving the iPhone some serious
heat. Their "Island of Misfit Toys" combination with "There's a Map for
That" campaign is genius. On other fronts, you have the Droid, which has
what has arguably the absolute best turn-by-turn UX experience of any device
(phone or otherwise) on the market, and can absolutely beat the desire for
unlimited access to fart machines in the App Store.

The iPhone has dramatically increased people's awareness of smartphones and
their desire for them. I don't think the iPhone's particular perceived
stranglehold will continue though as the other vendors produce attractive
alternatives and position themselves well.

[IxDA Discuss] Rating vs "Like"

2009-11-11 Thread R. Tan
Hi Group,

Any thoughts on when it is best to use a rating system vs a simple
like/don't like voting feature? I currently need to decide which way to go
on a restaurant guide project in which the existing rating system is a 1-5
scale "star" (with no guide, higher stars = better).

Unless one has a known and universal explanation on how "stars" are valued,
it seems that the rating system is flawed. What are your thoughts on this?

[IxDA Discuss] SURVEY: Understanding the needs for Graduate IxD Education

2009-11-11 Thread Dave Malouf
Hello all you UXers,

I have put together a survey to try to better understand the needs for
graduate education in interaction design around the world.
I would appreciate a bit of time on your part (20-30min at most) to fill out
the survey to let me know something about you (anonymously of course).

This is not just for people who have gone through graduate education, but
for anyone practicing user experience and for those who hire user experience
designers.

So thank you in advance for your time. Here's the link: http://bit.ly/IxDEDU

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Human Centered Design or Technology Centered Design??

2009-11-11 Thread dave malouf
I struggle with this same thing. I think its why I went into education
(among other reasons). But since we have all been effected (me
included: if you only knew how much TV I watch, e.g.) by these
realities, it makes it really hard for any of us to truly push out of
them.

But this is why I have been concentrating on my work being less about
designing the behavior of products and more about designing the
behaviors of people through the behaviors of products & services.

There is an idealism to this though that doesn't map against the
realities that all designers are facing. Work in our world has to pay
for the food & shelter minimally required according to the cultural
standard of living you as a designer have said is what you
need/want/deserve, etc. We all can't do everything pro-bono or even
go work for Bono. ;-)

I also think this is all very difficult b/c of the needs of the
economic structures we are embedded in. We just can't stop making
stuff on a dime. Part of the story of stuff (reference on purpose)
that we have to acknowledge is that the money they generate does
currently make the world go round. So working to "stop" that is
well contra-indicated w/o HUGE social, cultural, and economic
changes.

Oy! I'm depressed ... I think it is time to play a game on my
iPhone. Ah! Doodle Jump will soothe my mind. ;-)

Hi Dave,

Wanted to let you know your comment really rang a bell for me:

"*People are lonely, not b/c they are wearing headphones. People are
lonely b/c we have disintegrated the extended and now the nuclear

I wonder how we as interaction designers can influence culture to move
beyond materialism and false ideologies and really connect as people once
were. Love to hear any thoughts people have around this!

Cheers!

[IxDA Discuss] Good books or resources for interview techniques

2009-11-11 Thread Liou Yamane
I just did a short focus group and light usability test with a couple of
children. What I noticed is how important the phrasing of interview questions
and usability tasks is, especially with children but also with adults in
general.

Has anybody recommendations for books or other resources that can help me in
phrasing questions and tasks as neutral as possible?

PS. I found http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=6191 but I thought that the
books are rather general and broad.

I teach a course (hopefully to be a book in the not-too-distant future)
which is about using Ajax for good (better user experience) rather than
evil (just making things more interactive for the sake of it).

One of my biggest frustrations/disappointments is to see Ajax applied
gratuitously to a page (to make the shopping basket more interesting,

the 'Update' link if quantities are changed - remain unaddressed.

Anyway, this is a perennial problem in design that is not going to go
away any time soon. The best we can do is understand the issues (from
both the business/technology and user experience sides) and focus our
solutions accordingly.

[plug] For anyone that is interested I am running the course for NNG in
Berlin next week. If you would like to know more about the book as it
progresses, please drop me a line. (There are no plans for a movie as
yet.)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Human Centered Design or Technology Centered Design??

2009-11-11 Thread Ali Dehghanpour
Dear Dave

I know that it is not the whole story but as far as our concern as
interaction designer I think designers should be aware of misusing
the technologies or using it too much that may cause the problem.I
also believe that technologies have lots of benefits and I'm aware
of them and appreciate them.
But I think there must be a way to help designers not to fall in
trap.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Search select: after or before the search box?

2009-11-11 Thread Fredrik Matheson
I've found this option to be quite efficient:

onClick, reveal a box around the search field and search button. Below the
search field, add a list of useful filters (can vary across contexts).

Pressing Enter/the search button = a search w/o pre-filtering
Selecting one of the filters = easy pre-filtering with minimal hand/eye
coordination work. You can also add keyboard shortcuts for the search or
tell the searcher that you can go up/down in the list using the up/down
arrows. If you do, make sure pressing the Enter key actuates the search
filter they have selected, not the unfiltered search.

When the search result page is presented, make sure to display the
pre-selected filter prominently so that you can re-configure the search on
that page.

Here are a few interesting links on the matter:

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Search select: after or before the search box?

2009-11-11 Thread William Hudson
Vinícius -

Certainly no problems understanding your English, so well done!

You can of course do this both ways at the same time. Have the search selector
before the search field *and* give them a guided / faceted search interface on
the results page. I think you would always show the guided / faceted search
with results across all areas, but if they have selected a specific area (say
'books' on Amazon), that would be the focus of the main results listing. (BTW,
Amazon *doesn't* do it this way - if you select 'books' you get just books. If
you decide that you also want to see DVDs, you have to search again.)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] read, 3 Things Phone Manufacturers Should Get Right to Beat the iPhone

2009-11-11 Thread Jarod Tang
IMHO, it's designing the best as we can for the end user ( and manufacture
for lower cost). Beat the iPhone maybe a natural result ( be even so, the
market is big enough for different players ).

As co-working with the manufactures, i found some really claim that "our
this handset will kill iPhone", but it turns to dust in the end ( we see
many xxx killers in last two years, but not so many suprise to the end users
IMHO)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Autoplay Audio

2009-11-11 Thread Lawrence
Don't forget that they are the client and its a requirement of the
job, ensure you design a solution that makes it easy for a user to
change the setting, or offer a different approach such as user
activated.

..so that someone in an office who is skiving and is going to get
in trouble quick when I click on this website and sound blasts out
over my laptop speakers just as the boss walks past.

With sweat quickly beading on my brow and my face reddens I
immediately go for the close button and vow never to return to that
website, or think ill look tonight, at home, and never do.

in other words, analyse and define where target users are likely to
view the site, and explain the implications to the client in business
terms of audio safety, but dont forget they are the client, and its
thier site, and they will do whateve rthe hell they want with it. :)
