Re: [IxDA Discuss] Agreeing to disagree
Hey Guys, Not wanting to jump into somebody else's conversation half way through, but I think the key word in the sentence the seductive power of the design of certain material and virtual objects can transcend issues of price and performance for buyers and users alike. is CAN. I don't think that anybody is suggesting that emotion trump usability in every situation but I've seen plenty of situations where they do. Apple products are a great example of this as they often appear easier to use than they actually are due to the owners emotional attachment to them. Similarly I've seen plenty of Enterprise apps which are really easy to use but appear more complicated because of appearance and a lack of emotional connection. As such I think it's hard to argue that emotional bias doesn't create an aesthetic usability effect, at least in certain circumstances. I think picking up on the Philip Stark Juicer is a bit of a straw man argument as we all know that it's more a piece of art than a functional device. However just because one emotionally appealing object is difficult to use doesn't mean that all are. Interestingly, whenever people talk about usability they usually focus on the efficiency, memorability, learnability and error handling, forgetting satisfaction all together. So I would argue that improving the emotional satisfaction of a product at the expense of learnability isn't pitting usability against design. It's simply balancing one usability metric against another. Lastly, if you believe Maslow's hierarchy of needs as applied to product design, surely delight (psychological needs) have a stronger influence than usability (comfort) over the owners perception of the object. Sure if the object is impossible difficult to use as in the case of Stark's juicer, the hierarchy has no solid foundations and the experience fails for many people. However people are willing to accept a reduction in usability, as some would argue is the case with the iPhone, if the final result is more meaningful and joyous to use. [IxDA Discuss] [Plug] UX London in June
Hi Guys, Sorry my first post is a bit of a plug, but I thought my fellow Europeans would be interested in the UX London conference we're organising in June. http://uxlondon.com/ UX London is Britain's first major user experience event, comprising two days of practical, hands-on workshops, and a day of inspirational speakers. We've got a lot of IxDA regulars flying over to speak, including Peter Merholz, Dan Saffer and Donna Spencer to name just a few. The aim of this event is to help build the local usability, interaction design and user experience communities in Europe, so I hope a few of you can make it along. Rather than your typical talking heads conference UX London is primarily a professional development event. So we've broken the program down into three tracks: core skills, advanced skills, strategy and management. To give you a sample of what we'll be covering, here are some of the sessions we've got confirmed so far. * Influencing Strategy Through Design * Brainstorming and Concept Generation * Design Research * Quick Sketching for Interaction Design * Information Architecture Essentials * Copywriting and the Scent of Information * Interactive Wireframing * Getting Real with Agile Design * Managing a Team of UX Professionals Early bird tickets are now on sale so I hope to see a few of you there in June.
