Re: [IxDA Discuss] Best role for UX in Agile/ Scrum - Customer vs. Implementer?

2010-01-26 Thread Charles Hannon
See the recent thread by Dave on this talk by Cooper:

http://www.cooper.com/journal/2010/01/an_insurgency_of_quality.html

Cooper specifically advocates that a "senior interaction designer"
take on the role of product owner. And also the role of pig, not
chicken--Cooper's summary of that metaphor is very different from
Rich Rogan's above.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How to introduce experience design in high schools?

2009-01-21 Thread Charles Hannon
Ask them to talk about the lunch room--how large numbers of students
are able to get their trays filled in a short period of time, where
the bottlenecks are, what does and doesn't seem logical about the
current design.

Since the the topic is "experience" design, you should stay away
from technology until after you get a good list of principles on the
board from a more physical experience like this.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] too much feedback?

2008-05-18 Thread Charles Hannon
I wouldn't call either of these system messages (desktop items or
newly installed programs) examples of "feedback." Feedback should
be thought of as the system's response indicating that it has
correctly (or not) received the user's intended action. These are
examples of unnecessary and annoying notifications intended, I guess,
for perpetual beginners. Why isn't there at least a simple "never
see this message again" link embedded in them?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Alan Cooper's Goal-Oriented Design process - step-by-step

2008-05-02 Thread Charles Hannon
One thing I would add to this thread is the use of "story" in the
Cooper method as a way of doing requirements definition. This is more
fully developed in About Face 3 than in previous editions. When I
teach this book, I find "story" (through context scenarios, key
path scenarios, and validation scenarios) an effective way to define
data elements and functional requirements, especially in relation to
the personas that students have previously developed.

[IxDA Discuss] History of Plus Symbol (+) in HCI

2008-03-18 Thread Charles Hannon
I am interested in the history of (+). I am tracking the "evolution" of this
interaction idiom (and others) and the ways in which user mental models have
to adapt to such changes.

I think (+) first meant "expand" as opposed to (-) which meant "collapse."
In iTunes it means "Add Playlist" and this has been copied (very crudely) in
the Sony Reader eBook Library application. In the original iPhone/iPod Touch
Safari interface it meant "Add Bookmark" but after the January 2008 upgrade
it has been generalized to mean "Add Something."

I am not a long-time Mac user so I wonder if (+) has always been part of the
Apple lexicon, or if it is new. Also, has anyone on this list seen (or
created) different implementations/meanings of (+) in other products?

Charlie
