Re: [IxDA Discuss] When to use faceted navigation

2009-10-15 Thread Kim van Poelgeest
It is especially useful when there are many different types of
criteria, such as price-range, maximum attendees, duration, themes,
which are somehow linked to one another with many article, product or
data entries.

Especially useful:
1. when there are many criteria in different fields
2. similar data entries with subtle differences (hard to scan or
filter requiring advanced user knowledge)
3. if you have a very specific set of requirements for a user (e.g.
behaves like a non-linear wizard)

I am using faceted navigation for a client who has products with many
criteria, also including 'themes', which can be expanded and
interconnected endlessly.

As you point out yourself, it may be overkill with only 2 facets. But
if it's about combining parameters, the technique itself could be
interesting.

There's a good webshop in the Netherlands using multilevel facets
which is an interesting approach. You can remove breadcrumbs if
you've dug deep enough.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] A vision for the 10-finger desktop

2009-10-12 Thread kim van Poelgeest
First of all thanks for the vid. I think you're making an interesting
point. Have you actually researched the strain involved with such an
interface?

I have a Jazzmutant Lemur http://www.jazzmutant.com/lemur_v20.php,
which I use to make music. I can use all ten fingers in an intuitive
way. However, it costs way more energy it does just using pen tablet,
touchpad and keyboard combined (or another combination). Especially
using everything from a three finger pinch I imagine it to become a
heavy physical strain.

On the topic of Lemur and tablets, industrial designers could surely
learn a thing or two from the electronic music industry. Touch-strips
(sort of sliders) are inexpensive and intuitive (think a large
scrollable area in percentage or 1:1 mode). Or how about the easy to
use combination of interface adaptation with this simple MIDI
controller combined with eg Ableton Live
http://www.novationmusic.com/products/nocturn?option=1. It sure as
hell beats programming a Lemur in simplicity and directness. And what
about

For some reason, we are limited to this day to a single touchpad and
a keyboard on our screens. Why don't we have:
proximity sensors
touchwheels
motion controller (miniwii?), e.g. just slightly waving your hand
from a small distance to skip from one area to another, improving
distant usability (think entertainment centre, scanning through
documents or photo's, or whichever you come up with)

and a dozen other techniques that could improve tangibility of user
interfaces.

But you need adaptable software, maybe some sort of interface
swapping. Again, MIDI/OSC has researched far more advanced heavy duty
interface users over a lengthy period of time. All I know is that if I
ever came to work in the interface industry (researching both OS
possibilities and hardware standards) I would research all those
other areas currently under development.

Again thanks for the vid. I'll be watching closely!

I'm kind of a tangible interface enthusiast and proud owner of a
Jazzmutant Lemur, and maybe some of the links I collect are of
interest to you:

I'll be following this thread with interest to see what else comes
up.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Tab order - how to escape from a grid that uses tabs

2009-10-01 Thread kim van Poelgeest
Your solution might work well, depending on the number of fields you
have to TAB through to (the number of cells on a row). It can be very
frustrating to cycle even through more than two empty cells just to
leave a TAB order.

Consider the proposition. When would a user want to TAB out of the
data entry field? Most likely when finished entering data, so what
would feel most natural is hitting ENTER / RETURN. I don't see why
you wouldn't keep such a suggestion appearing each time or
continuously with a live suggestion once you reach the end of a each
row or logical sequence, or only just once after leaving the first
row.

I think I would try that if I hadn't worked with the app before and
if I didn't feel that it would actually send the data and leave the
page.

But I would be interested in what would be the result of the first
tests.

Sounds like a variant on faceted navigation. It's used often with
ecommerce websites having tons of categories to browse.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Shop or Buy?

2009-09-23 Thread Kim van Poelgeest
You're making an excellent point Alina, it is clear to me where to
click when I want to buy. I guess that should answer the question,
but you should find the right copy to convey the message, have it
reviewed with a copywriter and an interaction designer, then test it
on your users. Maybe with A-B split-tests. Alina, if you have such
tests available, I would be much interested in a peak in the results.
