There are some references that made me think about graphic presentation of
complex data.
Stamen Design it's around since 2001 and have a success history in data
visualisation along with Digg and other clients:

In 2004 was released a book called "Total Interaction" from Magnus Rembold
and Jürgen Späth* *professors in University of Applied Sciences and Arts in
Zürich, Switzerland:

TED presented in 2006 a marvelous talk about "Debunking third-world myths
with the best stats you've ever seen" where Swedish professor Hans Rosling
give us a lesson:
