I have passed this excellent critique on to the appropriate product
manager. I'm not deeply familiar with that aspect of the site, but it
certain sounds problematic and worth examining. My apologies for not seeing
this earlier (and for turning you into a spammer). If anyone has LinkedIn
questions or issues (or wants a job) they should definately email me
directly *without *the IXDA subject line, since that's what I'm filtering
on. :) You do indeed have a friend at Linkedin.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Invitation to connect on LinkedIn

2008-09-09 Thread Jay Morgan
Going into Gmail Contacts, I click on "My Contacts" and find this:

My Contacts is a place to import, store and view all of the contact
information that's important to you. You can also create your own groups of
contacts to easily email many people at once.
We add people you've emailed to Suggested Contacts. You can move contacts
from Suggested Contacts into My Contacts at any time.
Automatically move suggested contacts into My Contacts if I frequently email
them.

Not sure if that option will fix it, but it's been checked for me and I'm
going to uncheck it in an attempt to remedy this.

Hope this helps.

This problem has been intriguing/haunting me for a while... especially
since I've been using Thunderbird as my email client.

It has a related problem in which if you want to show images from
certain emails for "approved addresses" (like, for instance if I want
images to appear from emails from Crate & Barrel or whatever), those
email addresses have to be added to one's address book. This just seems
silly to me.

The same goes for contacts and memorized email addresses -- on the one
hand, it's convenient for the client (or GMail) to remember addresses,
but I don't necessarily want *everyone* to whom I've
contacted/replied/forwarded an email be added to my contacts list or
address book...

I'm definitely in agreement with Dave that there needs to be a
"convenience limbo" where those addresses I've used before can be
brought up easily when I need them, but it's separate from my *actual*
contact list. And I should be able to move them from the CL to my
address book easily.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Invitation to connect on LinkedIn

2008-09-09 Thread David Malouf
I also think (maybe) that there is an issue with Gmail's design here
as well.

On the one hand the auto-add to my contacts that Gmail does is often
a G-d send. I know I can type an email address of almost anyone I've
ever replied to and Voila! it is right there.

On the other hand, there is no way to distinguish between these
passive additions to my email history vs. those I've actually WANTED
in my contacts. B/c of this, I don't even bother managing my well
over 2000 contacts (and no I'm not that popular and I'm not a
stalker).

Since so many orgs are using Gmail as a quick way to "find" &
"connect" w/ the social network like Dave here, they should be
asked to do something about it, so that the intention behind
LinkedIn's request is not so harsh.

I'm just saying that if Gmail added some simple features it would be
better. It would make the contact list a lot more useful. This is
basically what Outlook does.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Invitation to connect on LinkedIn

2008-09-09 Thread Dave Meeker
Thanks Will... and again, sorry everyone!
What a bad situation!

For anyone who cares... here is the experience that I had which has
led to a zillion people I don't know that well getting LinkedIn
requests from me. That bothers me because I like LinkedIn a lot, but
ONLY use it for people I actually have connections with. And now, that
is shot.

When you add people from your Gmail address book (or any address
book), the LinkedIn UI shows you the full list of folks on-screen. I
selected about 10 people out of the two thousand-or so person list. I
clicked "send invitation", the page reloads, and at the top (which I
did not see) was the message that my invitations had been sent.
Honestly, to me, it didn't look as if anything had happened at all, so
I clicked "send invitations" AGAIN. When I did this I failed to
recognized that it had checked every single user by default, and there
was absolutely no way to stop it.

I'd love to see a different mechanism in place to handle looking up
people from your email accounts and sending them invites. I believe
the intention on LinkedIn's side is to get as many people to sign up
as possible. I understand that. I "get it". What I don't get is a
happy feeling knowing that I just sent spam out to a ton of people I
do not know, and now many of those people are acting on my request and
becoming "Connected to me". Good for LinkedIn... Bad for a LinkedIn
User.

Other than that, I love the service. But I would request that they
revist the experience design of this portion of the Web site.

Again... sorry everyone.

Dave

I believe we have a friend over at LinkedIn - Christina W. who can apologize
for LinkedIn's Bac'n generator :-)

I have come to despise Bac'n.

All -

Please forgive my LinkedIn Request.
I am about to fire off an email to them to tell them that the user
experience of adding your friends from email is pretty poor, seeing as
how every single person in my gmail account happened to get an email
from them last evening... including about 5000 people I don't even
know.

I sincerely apologize for this!

(and LinkedIn... I'd like you to apologize also!)

Sorry folks,
