I agree with Dave Malouf, also because I would prefer not to add
another widget to my desktop.

Thanks, Jeff. I should have investigated the settings first but I
think this would make a good springboard to giving RSS another shot.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA discussion widget idea

2009-05-27 Thread Jeff Howard
Hi Adam,

There aren't any APIs to the discussion list. The RSS route is about
the only way I could see to do this type of thing right now. That's
what's powering the IxDA Twitter account.

http://www.ixda.org/rss.php
http://twitter.com/ixda

Also, I should mention that you can switch your account to receive
every post via e-mail, so you don't need to keep checking the
website. Set it on your profile page. On that note, you could
subscribe a completely new Gmail account just for the list and then
hook it up to the existing Google Gmail widget. Instant feed into
your dashboard for the 10 most recent posts.

2009-05-27 Thread Adam Lerner
Interesting, Dave. That might be a good fix. I have to admit to not
having really "taken" to RSS (although, I sort of use Twitter in a
manner similar to how my friends use RSS.)

Maybe it's just time for me to get with it. Still, I do like the
idea of having a little thread-viewing tool living on my Dashboard.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA discussion widget idea

2009-05-27 Thread dave malouf
Can't you (for now) take a simple RSS widget and have it point to the
RSS feed(s)?

I know some people still really like the email model and I was sooo
reluctant to move over, but now that I use IxDA almost purely on RSS
through Google Reader, I don't think I could ever go back. The ONLY
loss is threading, but I really don't miss it in the end.

[IxDA Discuss] IxDA discussion widget idea

2009-05-27 Thread Adam Lerner
What do people think of an IxDA desktop/dashboard widget that would
give members a view into what discussions were currently active on
the discussion board?

Frequently I will see an email come by the list about a topic I am
interested in, only to have to repeatedly check the website to see if
anyone has contributed to the thread.

Perhaps there is a more elegant/simpler solution to this that is
escaping me, but I thought a small app that displayed active
discussions and allowed you to tag those you want to "follow" would
be a time-saver.
