Sorry, this was a bit big and awaited email list moderator approval. I
cancelled and put the GIS Specification document at the following URL:

Hi OSGeo Community (cc Steve, Mike),

Sorry if I should have posted this elsewhere.

My colleague Steve Carver has been approached by Mike Daniels from a
charitable organisation (John Muir Trust) for a GIS solution to managing
its data and collaborative working. I am sure that an OSGeo software
stack with some consultancy and training is the best option. I asked to
forward the invite to tender to this list. Is anyone interested? If so,
you can contact Mike Daniels direct. There may also be some
collaborators with links to the University of Leeds that might be
interested in working up a proposal.

Is there documentation for a similar OSGeo Use Case? Is there
documentation on similar invites to tender and offered solutions?

I've sent this on without finding a service registry with lists of
consulting companies. I think such a thing exists, but I didn't find it
with a quick search...

I am interested to know what solution is put in place, but personally
don't have time to contribute to such an effort right now.

Best wishes,

Andy

Hi folks,

Is anyone interested in the attached? Basically, providing a
cheap-and-cheerful and/or off-the-peg means of John Muir Trust sharing
GIS data among a small number of users at different sites (Internet
linked) with minimum functionality (upload data, swithc on/off layers,
zoom in/out, pan, print as JPEG/PDF). I've no idea as to what monies
they have in mind but they're a charity so it won't be mega bucks.

If you're interested can you contact Mike direct or pass on to those who
you think might be. I'll probably going to the workshop that Mike
mentions as I should (hopefully) be doing some more analytical work for
them in due course on wildness mapping.

Ta!

Steve

Dear Steve

I contacted you recently in connection with exploring GIS options for
JMT. I am now keen to progress this towards the stage of having
costings, timetable etc. drawn up so that I can take proposals to senior
management and explore funding options (no promises given!).

I therefore attach an outline of where our thinking has got to on what
we require. I would appreciate your quick thoughts on:

a) your interest in this work

b)an outline of approximate costings and timetable

c) your willingness to attend a GIS workshop hosted by us alongside
rival contractors to help us finalise our decision

I would very much appreciate your thoughts by the end of this week, if
at all possible.

Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss further, more info.

Many thanks

Mike Daniels

[OSGeo-Discuss] Quantum GIS on Nokia N810?

2008-03-03 Thread Charles Beaudry
Hi,

Has anyone ported QGIS to OS2008 running on the Nokia N810? The operating
system is built from Debian and uses GTK but there is a port of QT4 that
runs on the handheld (I installed a demo QT4-based program that works fine)
so QGIS may be fairly easy to port. Python 2.5 is also purported to run on
OS2008 but I have not succeeded in installing it.

What is needed I think is a port of QGIS as is or some subset of the
functionality, just enough to allow capture of points, lines and polygons
and a plug-in to interface with the built-in GPS unit that could show
current location on a map with possibility of saving waypoints.

The objective is to develop an open source geological field mapping tool. I
am prepared to fund this work. Discussions required to establish scope and
cost.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Buttons

2008-03-03 Thread Daniel Ames
Arnulf,

Thanks for the clarification on the logos. I was hoping to prompt this
topic thread with my posting. Also useful would be some guidelines on how
and where OSGeo logos can be used on other web pages, particularly in light
of the self selection/opt in membership approach.

Are all members (i.e. anyone who registers on osgeo.org) allowed to use the
OSGeo logo on their project/personal/corporate web pages to help identify
their interest in OSGeo? Should the logo be linked to a particular page on
osgeo.org? Should the original logo be used or some modification of it?

Thanks,

Dan

 Hi,
these logos must have slipped my attention. We should not circulate them
any further to maintain a clean brand.

Current OSGeo policy does not differentiate outside recognition of members
and charter members so that we do not have a need for separate logos.
Charter members are only required internally for votes into the board of
 directors.

It has been discussed that the OSGeo logo should be available with an
additional tag line Sponsor. It seems that the need to differentiate
between graduated and incubating projects is not seen as that important.

Jeroen will send a new set of logos around anytime soon. We should discuss
 them at the next meeting.

 Best regards,
 Arnulf.

Not really, but we do have need for a few different variations of
them. They can built on top of the OSGeo logos (http://osgeo.org/logos)

Specifically I've been wanting to have ones for:
  * Member
  * Charter Member
  * Supporter
  * Sponsor
  and probably some more...

Any volunteers to do up some prototype buttons or badge graphics? :)

See Branding Guide, and also Trademark Guidelines.

I do like the idea of branded logos for members, sponsors, and
supporters though. I would prefer to see the white background be given
precedence on these though; the black (inverted) image should only be
used where absolutely required.
