Displays just fine in my email client. I don't recognise the particular Indic
script but having international contacts means I have every font pack going
installed.

Hai,
Let me introduce my work to the list:-

http://cheruvannur.web4all.in/resources/

Hope, I can hear valuable suggestions.

It is hosted on a Debian GNU/Linux Etch server. It was my main project
during my M.Sc. course in last semester, and I decided to do this because I
wanted to do something useful for the panchayat - my first employer :)
(Panchayats are the rural local authorities in India, just like Municipalities
- the urban thing.) My course is just finished.

I developed this thing, on a Debian GNU/Linux Etch system using GRASS GIS,
PostgreSQL with PostGIS, Quantum GIS, UMN MapServer, ka-Map etc. Coded in
MapScript and php. All are Free/Open Source things.

I want to expand this to the entire district with some added query modules,
such as shortest route to a place, maximum coverage for some areas, flood risk
analysis etc, to make it a complete plan-development support system.

Er, but that's not the same as *group* registration: channel
registration is technical (creating/registering the channel through
chanserv), group registration is social (filling out paperwork with
network admins) right?

Chris,

Yes, these two types of registrations are clear to me.
I'm asking if registeriing #osgeo- prefixed channel automatically
makes it into OSGeo group, a registered group.

[OSGeo-Discuss] INSPIRE fit/gap analysis

2008-08-23 Thread Bart van den Eijnden (OSGIS)

Hi list,

I want to toss up an idea with respect to INSPIRE. Most of the standards
are still in draft, but I think it would be useful for the OSGEO
community to know which gaps have to be filled in order to play a role
in INSPIRE SDI's. This e-mail is mostly to see who is interested in both
INSPIRE and the OSGEO software stack.

I think it could be useful to do an ongoing FIT/GAP analysis between the
INSPIRE implementing rules and the OSGEO software stack capabilities, so
that as a community we know where we stand, and we can quickly make sure
the software stack is ready for INSPIRE. It is an opportunity not to
miss IMHO.

If you are interested, can you please sign up with your name on the
OSGEO Wiki INSPIRE page?

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/INSPIRE

Any further discussion should be done on the OSGEO standards list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]). So if you are interested and not
subscribed, please go to:

http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/standards

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Bart

I have worked quite some time on the INSPIRE directive when it was
discussed in the EU Parliament (see http://publicgeodata.org/).

There is a need to introduce different amendments to national laws in
order to get the data out of the National Mapping Agencies.

With little effort at the national level, you could get a lot of data
out of the NMAs.

But it needs people working on it, and to make a status of the
implementation of the directive in each country.

Re: [Proj] RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] Brief history of GIS OSS (bit offtopic?)

2008-08-23 Thread Cameron Shorter
I'm delighted to see people documenting the OSGeo history. This sort of
information is regularly embedded in presentations and it will be good
to have a comprehensive history to reference.

I'm hoping some historian gets inspired to collect the war stories of
all the different projects, collect the motivations, the trials, what
worked and what didn't, and how GeoFOSS has grown to what it is today. I
reckon it would be a very good read. (Well maybe a good read for us
select geeks interested in this stuff).

Re Mapbuilder:

I'd be more inclined to say Mapbuilder started in December 2003, when
the code for the current codebase started.

I recently updated the Mapbuilder timeline to include our key milestones
here:

Steven,

Is it correct to consider this date as the beginning of the project?

[OSGeo-Discuss] Re: Geospatial Integration Showcase

2008-08-23 Thread Cameron Shorter
In the Australia/New Zealand chapter of OSGeo, we have been discussing
the idea of a Geospatial Integration Showcase.

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Geospatial_Integration_Showcase

The Geospatial Integration Showcase is a practical demonstration of
Application and Data Interoperability which underpins FOSS4G
presentations and workshops and provides a platform for future
initiatives, including:

   * An GeoFOSS demo CD (often called Live CD)
   * Spatial Data Infrastructures
   * Testing suite programs
   * Open Data programs
   * Future conferences
   * Mashups and Boot Camps
   * Application selection decision trees (a tool for System Architects)

The Integration Showcase is the sum of many long term integration
projects and is structured to be significantly bigger than a one event
demonstrator and all participants are strongly encouraged to think long
term.

--

Bart, I think your idea of an INSPIRE/OSGeo gap analysis has a lot of
similar goals to the Integration Showcase and I think we have a lot to
gain by working together on this. So yes, I'm interested in an OSGeo
fit/gap analysis.
