[OSGeo-Discuss] Picking a name for "OSGeo Research and Education Labs Network"

2013-03-18 Thread Cameron Shorter

All,
Suchith's OSGeo Research and Education Labs Network is becoming more and
more successful, with new educational institutions being added every
week or two. (Are we up to 20 to 25 Universities now?)

I see the list of emails has 46 people on it. So there is discussion about:
1. Setting up an email list for all these people
2. Setting up a landing web page, something like http://labs.osgeo.org
3. Setting up a wiki page
4. Collecting names of participants, similar to
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Advocate

But before doing all the above, we need to pick an abbreviated name for
the "OSGeo Research and Education Labs Network"

Ideas floated so far:
* labs.osgeo.org (Probably the best name, but this name is current being
used by projects which haven't started incubation yet).

* Osgeo Specialist Labs
* OSGeo REL - research and education labs
* OSGeoEduLabs

I'm personally in favour of the OSGeo Research Labs claiming the "OSGeo
Labs" name as I believe that OSGeo Research Labs have already been using
the term "OSGeo Labs" for quite some time in correspondence, the
"Research Labs" are likely to become much more prominent than the
current "OSGeo Labs", and I know the person who originally coined the
"OSGeo Labs" term won't be offended (as it was me who originally coined
the "OSGeo Labs" term).

I'd suggest moving the existing "OSGeo Labs" to "OSGeo Pre-incubation"
(or a similar term).

I suggest that we wait for up to one week, before settling on a domain
name, in order to give everyone a chance to add their comments.

We should create a map like we have for the OSGeo advocates wiki (perhaps just

Talking about the OSGeo advocates wiki - it is beautifully done (kudos to
Cameron), should we have something like this
for the labs as well? Cameron what do you think?
This may help students to quickly find potential places where to apply for PhD
with FOSS4G focus or where there are advisors
with similar interests. Links to course materials could also be part of each
lab entry.

Helena,
Rather than duplicating the OSGeo-Advocate page, I'd suggest that we
keep things simple and central. We can do that by adding a new category
of OSGeo-Advocate descriptions, such as "OSGeo-Educators" or
"OSGeo-Labs", or ...

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Picking a name for "OSGeo Research and Education Labs Network"

2013-03-18 Thread Jeff McKenna
Thanks Cameron. What others might not have seen is the much discussion
off-line about this today. Earlier today I pointed out that the name
"OSGeo Labs" is currently in use, and then Helena recommended "OSGeo
REL" (Research and Education Labs) which I like very much.

I also earlier recommended that Suchith or whoever install a CMS/portal
on their servers, and then we could use an osgeo subdomain such as
xxx.osgeo.org (this would get around us having to work it into our
current CMS).

I recommended the group file some SAC tickets for the subdomain creation
and mailing list creation.

Wiki: can be started right away on our OSGeo wiki! :) You could even
create your own "REL" category so all related pages are nicely viewed :)
(i sound like the arnulf-bot more and more everyday)

I am happy to see this moved to public discussion.

/me goes quiet

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Open Source Geospatial Atlas

2013-03-18 Thread Robert Szczepanek

Hi Barry and others,

Is Open Source Geospatial Atlas idea still alive?
I hope so.
Just to remind this good idea ...

best regards,
Robert

For all those interested in the atlas project, I've started up a github site:

https://github.com/barryrowlingson/osgeoatlas

The .tex file there isn't compilable as it stands because the included
map.pdf files aren't included, they are kinda large and I didn't want
to clog the repo up with them. Maybe I could. Anyway.

In the downloads is a compiled pdf - it uses the latex-tufte style and
looks quite lovely. If only the maps were, I just did a couple of
quick print composers in Qgis as proof-of-concept. They won't make the
final cut.

Please add comments and ideas as issues on the github tracker.

There were opinions that a printed atlas wouldn't be a worthwhile
project due to quality, cost, effort and 'print is dead we're doing
all our maps on the interwebs now' considerations.

There should be a map exhibition at FOSS4G2013 in September, which
will include mostly online map projects and some kind of video wall of
mapping goodness. I've left the curation of this to other rmembers of
the conference team.
