Adrian, As a 'reject';-)I agree with your assessment. It did cause me to reassess my level of contribution, but did not stop me from working within the community. I also did not like the requirement to 'bang my own drum'. That left me in a very uncomfortable situation and I chose not to do so. What needed to be said had already been outlined by my nominees. I am working in OSGeo from some years ago but almost always in the Spanish Chapter and in the spanish-speaking world doing presentations, courses or workshops with the OSGeo software and always evangelizing about the benefits of the OSGeo Foundation. Like Jorge says, this year, with the inestimable help of another OSGeo-es members, we organized in Vigo, Galicia (a very nice place :-D) the first geocamp.es, an unconference about GIS and geo themes.
