[OSGeo-Discuss] [Election 2014] Nomination for Thijs van Menen

CC: Menen, Thijs van (CIV)

I’d like to nominate Thijs van Menen for OSGeo charter membership.

When I first started to work on a large open source geospatial project
in The Netherlands in 2002/2003, Thijs was part of the government agency
(Rijkswaterstaat) that did the tender for a geospatial infrastructure
based on open standards. Our open source proposal got chosen, and we
worked many many years on setting up the SDI and maintaining it. The
project was called GeoServices, and as with many things, the project was
unfortunately a bit ahead of its time.

Thijs is one of the few people at government agencies that truly
understands what open source is. He is very passionate about open source
software development, and a few years after the inception of the project
he led a team of consultants hired by the Ministry to work on the
maintenance of the software as well as on applications built on top of it.

He has also been a frequent attendant of FOSS4G, with attendance in
Victoria, Cape Town and Denver. Some of the Denver people might remember
Thijs by his frequent use of the phrase “Tik hem aan ouwe”. He was also
involved in the inception of the Dutch language chapter.

Through this nomination I’d also like to thank Thijs for everything he
did for open source geospatial in The Netherlands. His enthusiasm really
helped things move forward.

I second the nomination of Stephan Meißl as an OSGeo Charter Member. This is
another case where I just assumed that Stephan already was. I have worked with
Stephan on the MapServer PSC and participated in the 2014 OSGeo Code Sprint in
Vienna which again raised the bar in OSGeo Code Sprints. Stephan is already an
outstanding member of OSGeo, we just need the formal recognition of it.

[OSGeo-Discuss] A wonderful FOSS4G event...

2014-07-21 Thread Jeff McKenna
Hello all,

I want to publicly thank Peter Baumann and the whole organizing
committee for such a fun and inspiring FOSS4G-Europe event. I have the
same feeling now that I had after I came back from other vibrant events
such as FOSS4G-CEE in Bucharest and FOSS4G-BA in Argentina. These
smaller events are filled with passion, fun, learning, and energetic
students, and are true to the spirit of what FOSS4G is meant to be -
sharing and fun. This first ever FOSS4G Europe event had many of the
original FOSS4G family members, including Venka and Markus and myself,
together again after so many years.

The event may seem smaller, but not in terms of countries represented
(over 50), and I heard from many attendees how great the program was.
There is also something about the feeling of where FOSS4G started: on a
university campus, with lower costs, with a focus on workshops and
technical talks, and free social events of course. This event even had
Becks beer as a sponsor, which would make any core FOSS4G-er smile with
pleasure. Even the code sprint, which was small (about 18 attendees)
but it was just fun to be a part of, to hear the testing and compiling
of OSGeo-Live, of seeing students show up and willing to contribute:
thanks to Jachym and Peter for giving us the time and space to do this.

I am very glad I was there in person, as you can see a lot of momentum
has been generated from this event, with many European local leaders
becoming much more vocal now, on topics such as OSGeo representation in
Europe, industry focus, etc. I am happy that I was there in person to
talk face-to-face with community members and hear the wonderful ideas
and also concerns. I encouraged them there to speak openly from now on,
share their ideas with the global community. I am happy to see already
such a buzz of activity on the mailing lists as a result of all these
discussions.

I know myself I feel rejuvenated, filled even more with FOSS4G passion
and energy. I owe this to the FOSS4G-Europe attendees and local
committee: all the relaxing talks I had outside the building sitting
down in the shade 'in my office' ha.

And who really would ever believe that I cooked for about 40 FOSS4G-ers?
Well only those there could believe it ha!

Thank you to everyone who attended the first FOSS4G Europe, you are my
true family.

I would like to second this nomination for Thijs. I know he is a huge
supporter of OSGeo and FOSS4G use in his government agency in the
Netherlands, and I am honoured to call him my friend. He usually greets

the quickest way into my heart. Let us thank Thijs for all of his hard
work and passion for OSGeo and FOSS4G. Thanks Thijs man!

Régis has been a long supporter of OpenSource, and was among the first in

actively promote and fund it.

Régis is very active in promoting QGIS and other FOSS4G tools, and maintains a
constant and close relationship between users and developers. He funds a lots
of QGIS feature development and bugfixing.

He would be glad to be an OSGeo Charter member, and his profile may be seen

amazing guy in general and did so well to organize the *OSGeo Code Sprint* this
year !

I also support the nomination for Stephan, by Helmut and Mike. Stephan
does a lot of work for OGC standards support in the MapServer project,
and he is a great representative of the Viennese community. He also
somehow magically brought together the QGIS development team with the 'C
tribe code sprint' to create one of the biggest and best code sprints in
history, not an easy task! He deserves much credit and praise.

It is my pleasure to nominate Johan Van de Wauw for OSGeo Charter
membership.

Active in the Belgium community, Johan has been working hard lately on
helping with the OSGeo-Live project. He is also active in the SAGA GIS
community. He also helps organize the FOSDEM conference in Europe.

I had the pleasure of meeting Johan in Bremen recently, and I really
like his raw enthusiasm and passion for all-things-FOSS4G.
