[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo strategy and marketing : Call for ideas on osgeo activities

2016-04-27 Thread Marc Vloemans
Steven, Gert Jan et al

Please feel free to add, comment, fill in blanks and disagree with my
discussion piece in wiki Marketing Committee Discussion tab!

My intention was to gather insights etc from others, while still framing the
discussions on our strategy, stakeholders, questionnaire etc.
As well as finding common semantics (eg Eco-system vs community, marketing vs
promotion).

This way we can provide those less familiar with strategy-making processes and
marketing decisions/activities with some blue print and back ground. (Like more
tech-savvy colleagues explained software architecture to me in the past ;-)

Vriendelijke groet,
Marc Vloemans

[OSGeo-Discuss] GIS support for OMEGA Project

2016-04-27 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
The OMEGA Global Initiative (OGI) is working to establish a demonstration
project for OMEGA in coastal cities.

OMEGA is a system of floating platforms that produces green energy (solar
electricity, heat, biofuels), clean water (wastewater to potable water), and
sustainable food (multi trophic aquaculture) all of which support a circular
economy and prepare coastal cities for sea-level rise.

An OMEGA feasibility study was done with support from NASA and the California
Energy
Commission
and OGI formed as a non-profit to promote and facilitate OMEGA development
worldwide (for info please see OGI website: http://www.omegaglobal.org). We
are negotiating to do a project that will improve the social and environmental
conditions in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam-a UNESCO World Heritage
Site; arguably one of the
most beautiful places in the world.

The plan is to use OMEGA to process wastewater, produce energy, and food for Ha
Long village in an inner bay and prevent eutrophication of the outer bay with
the many beautiful islands. Initially, we want to map and model all features
and dynamics of the proposed site. Our seed-funding proposal submitted to
USAID includes opportunities for student interns. I can elaborate, but is
there anyone in the group that could help us?

Thanks, Jonathan

2016-04-27 Thread Sandro Santilli
Following recent experiment toward the provision of an OSGeo Git

developers:

   https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GitServiceRequirement

If you're interested in such a service, please add your name under
an existing requirement line and/or add your own requirements.

The current experiemental git services are described on this page:

[OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeo-UK] FOSS4GUK 2016 early bird tickets will be released tomorrow

2016-04-27 Thread Suchith Anand
Hi Jo,

Great to hear updates on the FOSS4G UK 2016 conference and thanks to you and
everyone in the local chapter for your efforts. I am looking forward to seeing
you all at Southampton soon. I am also happy to see OSGeo:UK chapter now firmly
established and expanding fast. I think it will be really helpful if OSGeo:UK
chapter can lead ideas for National level strategy for Open Principles in
Geospatial in the UK. It will also help other local chapters around the world
to build upon these ideas .

I have summarized my thoughts/ideas on the need for National level strategy for
Open Principles in Geospatial at
http://opensourcegeospatial.icaci.org/2016/03/national-level-strategy-for-open-principles-in-geospatial-ideas-and-inputs-needed/

Earlier this month , Dr Seraphim Alvanides ran an OpenGIS event at Northumbria
University. Thank you Seraphim for this excellent event to bring together local
authority officers and academics . It was a half-day inaugural event for
setting up QGIS Northern England User Group, bringing together, mostly local
authority officers and academics. The event info and programme overview at
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/qgis-northern-england-users-group-inaugural-meeting-at-northumbria-university-tickets-24220042800
btw I am hoping Seraphim wil prepare a summary from the event for Geo4All
newsletter also. It just shows the tremendous interest in this from all sectors.

So it important that we have OSGeo UK chapter take this role to bring together
nationally (central government, local authorities, academics, industry, SMEs ,
NGOs etc) and put forward and support National level strategy for Open
Principles in Geospatial in the UK. Please make use of FOSS4G UK 2016
opportunity to make this happen.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Call for ideas on osgeo activities

2016-04-27 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
Steven, Maxi

@Steven: Thanks for writing down for what is also my personal experience.
Even though I followed the process of setting up these strategic outcomes from
a rather nearby position,
it's hard to feel engaged with the questionnaire.

Let's try to analyse:
The Board has as first steps (re-)written down a Vision, a Mission and Core
Values.
The next two steps ("identification of ecosystems" and "identification of 4
strategic objectives" have also been done by the Board solely).

So now, in the 4th step, the Charter Members are asked for the first time for
their input.
But in fact you have already lost me in defining the ecosystem: what's the role
of the 8 identified parties in this ecosystem? And how come OSGeo.org itself
not part of the ecosystem?

And a few suggestions:
1. I think the Google Form would be easier to understand if it contained one
page for every of the 4 Strategic Objectives (so 5 pages in total).
2. The last question ("ecosystems involved") has two components: the "who is
the main beneficiary", but also "who is the main actor".

regards,

Gert-Jan

I just tried to complete the questionnaire. I found it very difficult to
understand. It seemed to be pushing me down a line of commenting on a web site
redesign

It didn't give me enough context of why the strategic outcomes were strategic
and it didn't allow me to suggest any alternatives. The mandatory questions
force a choice from a predetermined list with no option to suggest 'other' or
'none of the above'

If we want to poll the Charter members, I think we need to provide more
explanation and perhaps consider a two stage process where the first stage is
more open ended and then at a late stage we ask for responses to specific
questions arising from the first stage
