[OSGeo-Discuss] FYI - Farma Valley Winter Fest, including community maps (Dec 17-18-19, Southern Tuscany)

2016-12-06 Thread Andrea Giacomelli
*[apologies for the duplicate posting to those also on the ppgis list]*

Hello to all,

On Dec 17-18-19 we are organizing a "Winter Fest" in the *Farma Valley*, a
quasi-off-the-beaten-track site about 100 Km South of Florence (or some 200
Km North of Rome).

The primary focus of the Winter Fest will be on music, but we have a
significant presence of participatory mapping stories...some of these have
been advertised in the past on this list ...you might want to check out
www.pibinko.org and www.attivarti.org for a refresher, or check this short
paper [0].

Back to the upcoming event:

The Evening of Sunday Dec. 18 we will present the Beta version of the *Farma
Valley community map*. This work was initiated in early 2015, when we
decided to run in an international contest on location based games for
environmental education, and was then continued in various steps during the
past months.

We would like to launch the 1.0 version of the map before the end of the
Winter, so now is a good time to share the work in progress.

In the same evening we will also have the handover of some of the *night
sky quality monitoring sensors *we have been lending over the past nine
years to provide ground truthing data to the World atlas of light pollution
and to promote some of the "dark sky" areas in Italy [1].

On Monday, Dec. 19, our crew (with whoever wants to join) will gradually
glide from 442 metres above sea level to 10 metres above sea level
(Grosseto), where we will end our festival with an evening about
photography. Our keynote speaker will be Maurizio Bacci, the first person
in Italy to get an MSc in Environmental Engineering (this course was
created in 1981).

A English version of the flyer for the festival is available at:

http://www.pibinko.org/dec-17-18-19-2016-farma-valley-
winter-fest-three-days-of-pici-love-and-music-in-southern-tuscany/

The event, which was publicly announced last Sunday, has gained some media
attention: Il Tirreno, one of the two newspapers published in Tuscany,
dedicated almost one full page to the event, in its Grosseto edition, last
Monday [2].

The fact of getting media attention is not news (in 2007, with our first
project we ended up on Comcast Sports News [6]), but what is news is that
the event is being appreciated in its "holistic" approach.

The reporter also dedicated a specific box to the Community Map [3].

The festival will also act as the prelude for the next 12-18 months of
activities for pibinko.org, attivarti.org and the team helping to make
these projects work.

I would figure that most of you will not be able to attend, but I'd still
like to take the opportunity of the Festival to remind you that we are
always interested in establishing collaborations out of our "local site"
[4].

Best regards

Andrea Giacomelli

p.s. as an anecdote: Torniella, the main village in the Farma Valley is
also the main location where our first promotional video on GFOSS.it, the
Italian OSGEO Chapter, was shot, back in Dec. 2007...some of the actors you
see there are part of the core team organising the Winter Fest [5]

Interested people may sign up on the wiki page [3] where a draft of the
program which includes presentations and practical experiments is presented.

For more information on the topic please take a look at [4]

We are pleased to announce that the next Italian Conference on Software
and Data Geographic Free and Open Source "FOSS4G-IT 2017" will take
place in Genoa from Wednesday 8 to Saturday, February 11, 2017.
For the first year this conference gathers together the "XVIII Meeting
of Italian GRASS users and GFOSS" and "X GFOSS DAY".

The purpose of the conference is two-fold: the exchange of information
and experience between users of geographic data and software Free and
Open Source for the treatment of geographical information (GIS or
webGIS), and an opportunity for new or potential users to discover the
functionalities of these systems and the availability of data, and meet
developers and advanced users.

The meetings are being jointly organized by the Department of Civil
Engineering, Chemistry and Environmental (DICCA), by the Department of
Sciences for Architecture (DSA) and the Department of Earth Sciences,
Environment and Life (DISTAV) University of Genoa, involving staff and
collaborators in their courses they teach and use geographic data and
software Free and Open Source for the treatment of geographical
information.

The Italian Association for Geographic Information Free (GFOSS.it) will
manage the session dedicated to the use of tools GFOSS in Public
Administration.

Moreover, from an idea born in the seventeenth GRASS meetings and GFOSS
held in Parma in the current year, the GRASS and GFOSS user group has
prepared a simple questionnaire [0] useful to collect some information
about the use of free software and open source geographic scope by the
Public Administration. The questionnaire will highlight fears and
limitations of GFOSS software, but also highlight good practices and
examples of virtuous government.
The aim is to draw up a so-called White Paper and to present principles,
methodology and any initial results in the session on P.A.

The language of the conference will be Italian.
Participation in the conference is free, but registration is required.
The conference proceedings will be published in indexed journal, details
of which will be provided later.

The conference will be preceded by a day dedicated to the practical
introduction to GFOSS systems through hands-on workshops, Wednesday
February 8, and after the conference there will be a mapping party, on
Saturday 11 February, organized by the Italian OpenStreetMap community.
From Monday February 6 there will also be a GRASS Community Sprint,
whose work will be shown Friday at the end of the conference [1].
On the evening of February 9, will have N open dinner for participants,
in respect of which more details will be provided at the opening of the
conference registrations.

Important deadlines:
November 30, 2016 Call Opening workshop proposals (form on website)
December 15, 2016 Deadline for submission of workshop proposals
December 15, 2016 Registration opens and call for proposals for action
January 10, 2017 Deadline for submission of proposed interventions
January 25, 2017 Notice to the authors of the interventions
January 30, 2017 Publication of the plan of remedial measures

The event dates:
6-11 February 2017 GRASS Community Sprint
February 8, 2017 Day dedicated to the Workshop
9-10 February 2017 Conference

[OSGeo-Discuss] MIGRATE

2016-12-06 Thread Maria Antonia Brovelli
Dear colleagues and friends,

I am happy to announce you the launch of the first MIGRATE [1]challenge, that
will remain open for one month, from today (December 6, 2016) until January 5,
2017.

MIGRATE - MIGRation pATterns in Europe [2] is a Web mapping gaming application
aimed at educating and raising awareness about the phenomenon of migration in
Europe. MIGRATE has been developed by a team of researchers [3] from
Politecnico di Milano (Italy) within the third call of MYGEOSS project [4],
which has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and
innovation programme.

This challenge will allow you to get prizes while becoming informed about the
hot topic of migration in Europe. Joining the challenge is very easy: you will
need just to create an account and play the game as much and as best as you
can! At the end of the challenge, the top 10 players in the user ranking will
be awarded with Amazon vouchers. See [4] for the details about the prizes and
the rules used to compute users' scores.

The application makes full use of open data [6], is fully developed using open
source software and is released as open source (code available at [7]) under
the EU Public License (EUPL).

Best regards,
Maria
