Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] "Hostile Takeover" -- what do we mean by this?

2017-08-29 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies
Rather than stating what OSGeo is trying to avoid (a negative
statement), it might be better to frame the responsibilities of charter
members in terms of furthering the purpose of OSGeo (a positive statement):

"The purpose of OSGeo is to establish and support a diverse open source
community to foster the development, advancement and promotion of open
geospatial software technology and data. To further this purpose,
Charter Members have the following responsibilities: [...]"

Kind regards,
Ben.

Hi discuss,

In the notification emails from CRO to new charter member nominees, the
following is included (emphasis mine):

*"(Charter Members) have the following responsibilities: (1) annually vote
for OSGeo Board Members; (2) annually vote for new OSGeo Charter Members
and (3) be aware of and protect against a hostile takeover of OSGeo."*

I have had more than one nominee of mine contact me asking what exactly
this means. I agree with their concerns: this is strange language to use,
is not reflected in our bylaws, and frankly does not fit the image I
presented when I first contacted them asking if they would accept a
nomination.

It may be a language barrier or simply a misunderstanding, but can we
clarify what is meant by using this kind of verbiage, and consider a
re-wording?

Thanks,
Sara

[OSGeo-Discuss] cartographer and analysts view point requested

2017-08-29 Thread Jody Garnett
I have a request for direction from the website team:

*The icons are kinda driving me crazy. Made some new ones, not sure if I
got them correct following the notes we made at Codesprint day. **Especially
'Portal'*

I would like to ask for help - please:

1) reach out to me on hangout and we can go through the icons in the visual
collaboration environment used to communicate with the graphics designer
2) volunteer to attend the 14:00 UTC meeting tomorrow morning

I am looking for two volunteers here, rather than starting an email
discussion which relies on me caring conversation back to the graphics
designer. We need that first hand experience.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Mentors money

2017-08-29 Thread Anne Ghisla
Former admin here.

When I became admin in 2012, mentors money was added to OSGeo incomes.
I started a discussion with the Board and current mentors about it, and
the agreed outcome was that the mentors' money should specifically be
allocated for code sprint support. (See budgets from 2013 onwards, and
board list/IRC logs for extended information).

So it is misleading to say that OSGeo retains the money: it is
has been available to projects every year.

I welcome mentors to make use of this year's allocated money for code
sprints - for next year and onwards (assuming OSGeo will apply for GSoC
and gets accepted) the discussion can be reopened. I'm not an admin
anymore but I would be glad to contribute with information about past
decisions.

Best
Anne

Wrong assumption. Mentors decided collectively.

I mentored for GDAL during OSGeo's GSoC back in 2007.
I was explicitly asked if I, as mentor, agree to pass the money to OSGeo.
It was Frank Warmerdam (GDAL project manager at the time) or
it was someone else (Tyler Mitchell perhaps),
I lost those emails...

Wait, found it:

[SoC] Windup, and Mentor Summit, Mentor Payments
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/soc/2007-August/000173.html

followed up by agreement responses from mentors
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/soc/2007-September/thread.html

*That* is how it started.

I recalled, that was/used to be majority of choices.
I did that too.

I would like to nominate Barry Rowlingson for charter membership, Barry
is a university researcher and teacher who has supported OSGEO for many
years including being part of the LOC for the Nottingham FOSS4G
conference. He is also active on gis.stackexchange and twitter answering
questions on spatial R.

Cheers

Ian

PS Am I supposed to spam discuss with this also?
