[OSGeo-Discuss] Fw: [Geo4All] Every Student a Mapper: How to Put Open Mapping in the Classroom

2017-09-25 Thread Suchith Anand
Hi Tom,

Thank you for sharing this important info which will be of interest to the
wider OSGeo community

May I request to put some links to open mapping resources and tutorials in the
course structure

https://live.osgeo.org/en/index.html

https://live.osgeo.org/en/overview/overview.html

http://spatialquerylab.com/foss4g-academy-curriculum/

Ideally it will be good if those running these courses can give away OSGeo Live
DVDs /USBs to participants.

There is lot of synergies between OSGeo and OSM communities, so let us use this
opportunity to further expand synergies. It will be good to have this workshops
also happening in FOSS4G conferences (local, regional and global).

Best wishes,

Suchith

Sorry for cross postings

Mapping in OpenStreetMap is a valuable activity, but how can you make use of it
to teach geography? TeachOSM is presenting a one-day open mapping workshop for
geography teachers and other educators. Come attend the [State of the Map US
conference] a special workshop where you can develop the skills you need to put
open mapping in your classroom. This hands-on workshop is free to all US State
of the Map conference attendees and designed to help educators & students of
all kinds to:

  * Acquire open mapping skills using OpenStreetMap
  * Use open mapping to teach geography, social sciences, and natural sciences
  * Incorporate open mapping into the AP Human Geography curriculum.

Thanks for the hard job Vasile and Jeff and a warm welcome to our new 78

I've updated also the small report on CM demographics available here

Dear members of the OSGeo community,

confirm and share the results.

*All* the candidates[1][2] are accepted as all of them:

- were nominated by an existing charter member;
- were seconded by at least one charter member;
- no veto votes registered.

Hence, it is our pleasure to welcome our 78 candidates to the OSGeo
Charter Membership, increasing its size to a total of 390 individuals.
Congratulations!

New members, we encourage you all to update your wiki profiles with the
Charter Member badge[3], adding yourselves to the category[4] and
finally if you have not yet done so, add your profile to the OSGeo
Advocates list[5].

We will inform the board for formal acceptance of the list, update the
official list[6], pass to the secretary the revised contacts, and subscribe
the new members to the charter-members list[7]
as soon as possible.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Fwd: [Geomoose-users] GeoMoose 3.0.1 Released!

2017-09-25 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

Just forwarding a note about GeoMoose 3.0.1 being released. This is a “fix-it”
release for some items that were identified after the the initial release of
GeoMoose 3.0.0.

bobb

Hey Folks!

With 3.0 in the wild for a little more than a month we've made some fixes and
some updates that didn't make the cut in the first release. Thanks to everyone
for the contributions and feedback.

Release notes are here:

Downloads available on the good ole GeoMoose.org website:
- https://www.geomoose.org/download.html -- if you're seeing 3.0.0 please clear
your cache.

Some bigger highlights:
1. The upload dialog sees some major improvement. It's now substantially more
fault tolerant, reports how many features were added, and if there was a
failure.
2. The workshop from FOSS4G is now in the documentation:
http://geomoose.github.io/gm3/workshop/
3. A quickstart for getting GeoMoose up and running in EC2:
http://geomoose.github.io/gm3/quickstart-ec2.html

For those looking to do an upgrade:
You should be able to download the examples and update the local copy of the
"geomoose" folder.

Cheers everyone!

PS: If anyone does successfully update their application from packages I would
*love it* if you were willing to write up the process and have some
screenshots. It would really help solidify the "GM 3.X is easier to upgrade"
story.

I was looking in our bylaws and it actually has the language written down.
So charter member -> member.

Not sure why we got in the habit of not using this publicly. I guess the
website maybe a chance to change our language publicly.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Geo4All] Please share the Philosophy of Openness in Geospatial Science and Education on GIS Day and other Geo events

2017-09-25 Thread Suchith Anand
Dear Hristo,

In fact, we decided not to have a sign in page or any forms etc as we wanted
this to be a pledge of the hearts and minds. So just pass it to all colleagues
and ask them to support the pledge in their hearts for Open Principles in
GeoEducation and Science . So it is fully free and open for anyone to
participate. Just tweet, forward the emails, put blogposts , share the OSGeo
Live urls through your networks etc supporting Open Principles in Science and
Education. If you are at any GIS events , please share these ideas to
colleagues.

I also really hope the various organisations and SMEs in the OSGeo ecosystem
will come forward and distribute OSGeo Live DVDs, USBs as part of the GIS Day
and other Geo events that week . All ideas/inputs welcome.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear suchith,
This idea is really nice, but without some
financial support it will not work as expected.
If one participates in an event what is needed
is at least some printed leaflets and ready media
(preferably USB) which has to bought and written.
I personally cannot afford such expenses at my own.

I suppose other colleagues face the same issue.

I suppose "elected member" is an option.

[OSGeo-Discuss] [Election 2017] Board Nominations

2017-09-25 Thread Vasile Craciunescu

Dear all,

It's time for the 2017 OSGeo Foundation Board Elections.

The nominations for the OSGeo Board of Directors start today
[1]. Please take a minute to understand what the board actually
does[2]. A director should plan to spend several hours a week on OSGeo
business in order to do a good job. The current board members will
know best.

To nominate a candidate for the board please first confirm with the
person that they would like to stand for election as a Board member.
Then send an email to c...@osgeo.org CCing the candidate by 12:00 GMT
on Sunday 08.10.2017[3] consisting of:

- name and e-mail
- current country of residence
- a paragraph describing why you think this person would make a good
Board member.

Remember that only Charter Members are eligible for a seat on the
Board and for voting but that *anybody* can *nominate* a board member.

Last years, the nominated persons were asked, after public nomination,
to write some kind of manifesto about their plans for their term [4].

This is not mandatory at all but a good starting point for discussions
and to let the community know what are your ideas about the
Foundation.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Vasile & Jeff

[OSGeo-Discuss] [Election 2017] Charter Member nomination results

2017-09-25 Thread Vasile Craciunescu

Dear members of the OSGeo community,

After a period of three weeks, we close the membership process to
confirm and share the results.

*All* the candidates[1][2] are accepted as all of them:

- were nominated by an existing charter member;
- were seconded by at least one charter member;

We will inform the board for formal acceptance of the list, update the
official list[6], pass to the secretary the revised contacts, and
subscribe the new members to the charter-members list[7]

as soon as possible.

Best regards,
Vasile & Jeff
