[OSGeo-Discuss] [Call out] Diversity team volunteering

2018-04-01 Thread María Arias de Reyna
Dear fellow members,

We have had some discussions running in the last months regarding how
to improve diversity and inclusivity inside OSGeo. If you feel part of
a target group for diversity and inclusiveness, I would like to ask
for your help and volunteer to help us improving our guidelines and
conducts. Even if you haven't been a very visible or active member of
OSGeo until now, this is important because your point of view is
difficult to reach from a privileged perspective.

What is a target group for diversity?
We don't want to have a strict list here, our goal is to have a
diverse and wide range pool of points of views that can watch and
review OSGeo to make sure we don't leave anyone behind.

Some examples: POC, WIT, LGBT+, economic diversity. But we don't want
to stop there. If you are blind, neurodiverse, on a wheelchair, or
anything you think that we should take into consideration, please,
volunteer too.

What are we calling out for? Well, at least we have two starting points here:
 * Review CoC for FOSS4G and help organization in making it as more
diverse as possible.
 * Review CoC for OSGeo.

What do I ask you right now? If you want to help, please, do the following:
 * Join the CoC mailint list and say hi:
https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/coc-discuss
 * Help here: https://github.com/foss4g2018/foss4g2018/issues/65

This is all volunteer work and we won't ask you to do anything more
than you can give. But remember that without your point of view, we
can't make OSGeo easier to reach for people with your profile. And we
want to welcome everybody as much as possible.

Thank you very much,
María.
OSGeo, President.

2018-04-01 Thread Suchith Anand
Thank you Dirk. It is all thanks to the amazing volunteer work of our Editor
and co-editors.

Thank you for your offer to help promote and find people to contribute content.
That is very gratefully accepted. We need wide range of skillsets (esp. those
who can promote and try to find people who can contribute to the content ) for
this to reach wider . This has been a great instrument for helping us spread
Openness in Geo ideas to the wider geocommunity (not only the OSGeo community).
We can highlight the amazing work done in the OSGeo community to wider world as
the newsletter is send out to all key geo mail lists. For example, just last
week by coincidence talking to one of the colleagues I heard about OSGeo tools
powering FAO's website. This is a great example of OSGeo community's
contribution to Global Food Security (and even I didn't know about this!). So
we need more proactive approach to share these good works.

Details at http://www.fao.org/geonetwork/srv/en/main.home

Please get in touch directly with Nikos (Chief Editor) .

Best wishes,

2018-04-01 Thread Randal Hale

Good Morning Maria,

It's going well - I'm just moving slow in my juggling.

My list has two things I need to accomplish today: OSGEO Page and Email
listserve.

Yes - in the months leading up to this we reached out to as many people
as we could - some on the Wiki and some not. I hoped this email earlier
to OSGEO Discuss would turn up anyone we forgot.

Hopefully today those things get accomplished and I can get things
moving again this week.

Thanks for checking on me - I need all the pushing I can get.

Following the Guidelines [1] for Chapter formation we have a good start:

1. Self Organizing: Based on informal discussions with OSGeo members

I also realized in this email - we've yet to stick anything on the

3. As for an official rep for the chapter: I was nominated by the group
to be the official Spokesperson for now. So I'll do what I can to answer
emails or drag someone else into the mix to answer them if I can't.

4. I'll be sending more information to the OSGEO Board - I
wanted to start a discussion now and see if there was any angst that I
or anyone else could address and if anyone else was interested in
helping push this along.

5. TBD Later

Anyway - Since I've not quit done anything like this before - Excuse
anything I've forgotten or not done properly in this first announcement.

Randy

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Townhall - Please participate if you are at EGU 2018

2018-04-01 Thread Suchith Anand
Thanks to Peter for sharing the excellent updates on OSGeo Townhall on 10th
April at this year’s EGU General Assembly in Vienna
(www.egu2018.eu)

If you are attending EGU , please do participate in the discussion at the
Townhall meeting TM8 "OSGeo Townhall: Open Science demystified" ( Tue, 10 Apr,
19:00–20:00 / Room 2.31). Details about the Townhall at
https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2018/session/29320

I want to thank all OSGeo and EGU colleagues for making this session possible.
I think it is an excellent opportunity for learning and sharing ideas . Esp. in
times of some vendors starting putting trademarks, marketing slogans/tags of
products as “the science” ( I am not bothered by all these innovative marketing
gimmicks, I just find it funny! :-)) it is good to have free, open and
friendly discussions to help broaden our collective ideas and knowledge.

I won’t be able to attend EGU but I would like to send my greetings and best
wishes to all colleagues there.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear All

We are happy to announce that the OSGeo UN Committee launched yesterday the
OSGeo UN Committee Educational Challenge [1], thanks also to the support of
Boundless [2], who is sponsoring one of the three challenges.

Two challenges are related to the UN Open GIS Initiative [to know more about
that, look here 3, 4, 5], the last one is more general.

Deadline for submitting the proposals is April 30, 2018. Thanks to all people
contributing in creating this challenge.

Best regards

Maria & Serena
