[OSGeo-Discuss] How we replicate and build upon University of Turku (UTU), Finland's ideas and success

2018-11-23 Thread Suchith Anand

Dear colleagues,

University of Turku in Finland is doing inspiring work in building
international bridges through their work in Tanzania.

Looking at the University of Turku (UTU) Finland work made me think that this
is a great idea we can replicate for GeoForAll labs globally . It will be good
to twin a lab in North America, Europe with labs in developing countries. It
will be a great way to build joint ideas, collaborations and opportunities for
working together in the future. What do you think?

Best wishes,

Suchith

Subject: Welcoming University of Turku (UTU), Finland to GeoForAll

We are pleased to welcome University of Turku (UTU), Finland to GeoForAll.

UTU Geospatial consists of geospatial research, education and cooperation
resources and activities at the University of Turku (UTU), Finland. Thier
geospatial expertise is founded on multidisciplinary research and education and
international cooperation globally. Geospatial data, Geographical Information
Systems (GIS), Earth observation, digital cartography, locational technologies
and various geospatial analyses and modelling methods are applied in natural
and social sciences, economics, humanities, medical sciences and education (
http://geospatial.utu.fi ). The geospatial research and teaching activities at
UTU stem from easy access to digital geospatial data, software and hardware
combined with access to cloud-based computing environments. These include a
wide range of digital GIS and image processing software with laboratory and
mobile installations, and the use of mobile devices, such as laser scanners,
UAVs, GPSs, GNSS receivers, as well as smart phones and tablets. UTU is a part
of Fiuginet, Finnish University Network in Geoinformatics since 2008 and the
regional Spatial Data Infrastructure hub in South-West Finland, Lounaispaikka,
since 2002. UTU are also part of AGILE, Association of Geographic Information
Laboratories in Europe and EARSeL, European Association of Remote Sensing
Laboratories. UTU has strong geospatial research profile especially in the
subjects of Geography, Geology, Biology and Archaeology. These address dynamic
nature-human processes where spatio-temporal information at different scales
are integrated with biophysical field measurements and knowledge from the local
communities and society through place-based mapping methods. Mapping, analyses
and visualization is enabled through these multidimensional models of the
dynamic Earth. We have key research and education expertise in fluvial
processes and flood modelling; land cover/land use mapping and land change
analysis; biodiversity and mapping of forest dynamics; coastal and marine
environments and marine spatial planning; urban climate and environmental
change; participatory spatial planning and citizen-science approaches, and
Earth observation and geospatial innovations and business development.

University of Turku colleagues are doing excellent research and education
through their various research groups. Some examples below

Tanzania Research Team http://tanzania.utu.fi

Amazon Research Team http://www.utu.fi/en/sites/amazon/Pages/home.aspx

Coastal Geography Group https://www.utu.fi/en/sites/coastal/Pages/home.aspx

Fluvial Research Group http://www.utu.fi/en/sites/fluvial/Pages/home.aspx

Urban Climate Research Group
http://www.utu.fi/en/sites/climate/climate/turclim/Pages/home.aspx

We thank Niina Käyhkö and colleagues University of Turku for joining GeoForAll.
We are looking forward to work with colleagues in making geospatial education
and digital economy opportunities available for all. Please join us at

Best wishes,

Suchith

Can someone from OSGeo-Australia please reach out on behalf of GeoForAll and

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo symbols set

2018-11-23 Thread Kristian Evers
Nicolas, very cool. I am looking forward to seeing your PROJ logo proposal! It
would be great if you could share it with the PROJ mailing list once you have a
design you are happy with.

Thanks for thinking about this,

Kristian

Hi,

Thank you all for the positive feedbacks !

Kristian, i already have a few ideas for a PROJ logo and will come up
with a SVG proposal soon !

Bart, thanks for noticing that mistake, the GeoExt logo has been
removed from the set. Sorry for that.

Cameron, adding colors to the project logos SVG would indeed be quite a lot of
work. Only the Foundation related logos are available in color for now.
(see:
https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/7135374/48731563-a1696800-ec3d-11e8-9a4c-c1b5919a325a.png
or
https://github.com/nbozon/osgeo/tree/OSGeo-symbols-set/marketing/branding/symbols/svg/color)
Please also note that you can already add a unique color to each
project logo using CSS). I would be glad to work on a colored version, but i
would need much more free time for that !

Best regards,

Nicolas

Nicolas, these symbols look very impressive!

As Kristian noticed, there are a few OSGeoLive projects which have logos which
are not as creative as what you have been creating. (See
https://live.osgeo.org/en/presentation.html ) I'd be happy to help point you to
our OSGeoLive points of contact for each project if you would like to ask them
if you'd like to draw them a logo.

What are your thoughts on logo colours? I'm guessing it would be quite a bit of
work to adopt logo colours into the SVG?

Once you are done, we should probably be including your logos into the
OSGeoLive documentation.

Nice work, Cameron

Nicolas,

Very impressive work!

Regarding projects that doesn’t already have logo, would you be interested in
coming up with logo suggestions for those projects? I can only speak for the
PROJ project, but I am sure all projects without a logo would be interested in
having one. At least a new logo for PROJ would be very welcome!

Good job,

Kristian

Hello all,

I have finally been able to put together and publish a first version of the
OSGeo symbols set.

This is a visual representation of the OSGeo projects and activities aimed at
supplementing the Foundation branding material.

A preview of the OSGeo symbols set is available here:
https://nbozon.github.io/OSGeo/symbols-set/

The 48 symbols fall into four categories:
- Foundation (OSGeo fundamentals represented by 'Variations on the Compass')
- Initiatives (mostly based on the compass shape too)
- Projects (derived OSGeo project logos)
- Community (derived Community projects logos)

The set is made of two parts, both copyrighted OSGeo:
- The source SVG documents, licensed under CC-BY-SA
 (see
https://github.com/nbozon/osgeo/tree/OSGeo-symbols-set/marketing/branding/symbols/svg)
- A cross-browser webfont, licensed under OFL.
(see
https://github.com/nbozon/osgeo/tree/OSGeo-symbols-set/marketing/branding/symbols/font)

Important notes:
- Some projects do not have a logotype, only logotext, and cannot be included
in the set at this stage (namely PROJ, GEOS, OSSIM and Degree).
- Some projects logos were heavily modified or redrawn, in order to ensure
constistency and scalability. I'm listening to project owners feedbacks and
will be glad to work towards better solutions if needed.
- All 48 symbols are made available as black SVG. The 16 Foundation and
Initiatives icons are also available in color, based on our brand guidelines.
- This work may not be exhaustive and is subject to change.

Hope you will like it !

Reviews, comments and ideas are most welcome in the related PR:
