[OSGeo-Discuss] Anyone know GPU programming?

2020-07-08 Thread Pierre Abbat
Two months ago, I asked about GPU programming for PerfectTIN. I now have the
routine, which I'd like implemented in GPU, working. It takes a block of dots,
all in one triangle, computes the difference in elevation between the dots and
the triangle, computes how much moving the corners of the triangle up or down
would affect the previous figure, does some matrix arithmetic, and produces a
small square matrix and a small column vector as results. The code is in
adjelev.cpp in https://github.com/phma/perfecttin .

I am about to change the sequence of block sizes. Among other things, it will
make most of the block sizes multiples of 256, which should avoid waste when
using the GPU to compute.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Ethics of Digital Feudalism in Location Data in Agriculture

2020-07-08 Thread Suchith Anand

Dear colleagues,

Agriculture is an important source of livelihood for millions of small holder
farmers globally. Digital technologies plays a crucial role in promoting
agricultural productivity, improving rural livelihoods, and increasing small
holder farmer incomes. Smallholder farmers manage over 80 percent of the
world’s estimated 500 million farms, providing over 80 percent of the food
consumed across the developing world, and contributing significantly to poverty
reduction and food security.

With personal data fast becoming the world’s most valuable commodity, more
research needs to be done into the rise of Digital Feudalism and its societal
impacts.

Do small holder farmers really benefit equally, or even at all, from the
benefits of data sharing?

Do all stakeholders in the agricultural sector have the same access and control
to these insights?

How can we develop and empower ICT capacity for small holder farmers, farmer
cooperatives etc to help reduce digital feudalism?

GODAN article on Ethical dimensions of Digital Feudalism in Agriculture might
be of interest. Details at
https://www.godan.info/news/ethical-dimensions-digital-feudalism-agriculture

We welcome all interested colleagues to join the GODAN Data Rights and
Responsible Data Working Group [1] and share ideas for the Agriculture Data
Code of Conduct [2].

With the rise of Digital Feudalism and its impacts on Location data, it
raises many ethical questions. I am now working on an article looking into
Ethics of Digital Feudalism in Location Data in Agriculture.

Are there any examples of guidelines or code of conduct for mobile applications
collecting location data in Agriculture. Are there any journal publications or
studies in this area. If so, please email me the publication details so I can
learn more and reference them in my article. Thanks.

Best wishes,

Suchith

[OSGeo-Discuss] Fw: [D4N Stakeholders] Join the GEO Indigenous Alliance and partners for a discussion on Indigenous Peoples-led Use of Earth Observations

2020-07-08 Thread Suchith Anand

Subject: [D4N Stakeholders] Join the GEO Indigenous Alliance and partners for a
discussion on Indigenous Peoples-led Use of Earth Observations
To: d...@data4sdgs.org

Dear Data 4 Now Colleagues,

Please see below from Theadora Mills of GEO:

Tomorrow at the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF), the Group on
Earth Observations (GEO) will join a forum for Indigenous Peoples and those who
work with them to discuss opportunities and challenges for increasing
Indigenous Peoples engagement in the co-development, co-creation and use of
Earth observations (EO) data and tools. This is in support of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) to develop specific requirements for EO data, enabling
widespread impact to indigenous culture, land holdings, climate change and
youth empowerment.

This HLPF side event is being organised by FILAC, CANEUS, GEO, NASA,
Conservation International, Agvesto, and Saraniasat. The HLPF is the main
United Nations platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in
the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level.

Recognizing and honouring indigenous culture and knowledge, as well as
supporting indigenous stewardship of the millions of acres of land under
indigenous management represents a potential transformative pathway to meeting
the SDGs.

This side event includes a panel of experts, with several representatives from
the GEO Indigienous Alliance namely Diana Mastracci, James Rattling Leaf Sr.
and Titus Letaapo, who will discuss key challenges and opportunities for
inclusive engagement with indigenous peoples to advance EO design and
applications for sustainable development at the community level. They will also
discuss the successes and lessons learned from experience co-designing and
applying EO technologies to help advance indigenous rights.

Earth observations which include satellite, aircraft and ground monitoring
technologies can play a key role in supporting indigenous-led land management.
However, Indigenous Peoples currently do not have equal access or opportunities
to these technologies, including EO data and tools. To narrow this gap, we must
understand the unique challenges indigenous communities face to use and develop
EO technologies and address key topics to strengthen indigenous peoples’ rights
and help unlock EO capabilities for all.

Join the discussion on July 9, 12:00 to 13:30 EST
