[OSGeo-Discuss] India makes history as Chandrayaan-3 lands near Moon's south pole

2023-08-23 Thread Suchith Anand via Discuss

Dear colleagues,

A Historic moment, ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization Chandrayaan-3’s
lander touches down on the lunar surface, making India the first country to
successfully land a spacecraft near the Moon’s south pole.

All previous missions to the Moon have touched down near the equator - but
exploring the south pole is key to the hunt for water. Scientists now hope to
deploy a rover to send images and data back to Earth. Thank you to all
scientists and engineers who worked over many years to make this possible.

More details at https://www.isro.gov.in/Chandrayaan3.html

It is important to thank the women scientists who took India into space

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-38253471.amp

This mission will inspire students from all over the world to STEM education
and space science education.

Now it is time to study the Sun...

ISRO is going for the Aditya L1 mission. ADITYA-L1 shall be the first space
based Indian mission to study the Sun. This will be launched by PSLV from
Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The spacecraft shall be placed in a
halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, which is
about 1.5 million km from the Earth.

Details of the major science objectives of Aditya-L1 mission are at
https://www.isro.gov.in/Aditya_L1.html

Stay tuned, stay inspired, and let's make history together!

Best wishes

Subject: Launch of CHANDRAYAAN-3 Mission

Dear colleagues,

Congratulations to all scientists at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)
for launching of Chandrayaan-3 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota,
India.

Chandrayaan-3 is the third lunar exploration mission by the Indian Space
Research Organization (ISRO). The launch of Chandrayaan-3 took place at 14
July 2023, at 2:35 pm IST and injection of 100 km circular polar orbit was
completed successfully as part of phase one. The lander and rover is expected
to land near the lunar south pole region on 23 August 2023.

Chandrayaan-3 consists of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module
(PM) and a Rover with an objective of developing and demonstrating new
technologies required for Inter planetary missions. The Lander will have the
capability to soft land at a specified lunar site and deploy the Rover which
will carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during the course
of its mobility. The Lander and the Rover have scientific payloads to carry out
experiments on the lunar surface.

[OSGeo-Discuss] UK cannot ignore calls for slavery reparations, says leading UN judge

2023-08-23 Thread Suchith Anand via Discuss
A leading judge at the international court of justice has said the UK will no
longer be able to ignore the growing calls for reparation for transatlantic
slavery.

Judge Patrick Robinson, who presided over the trial of the former Yugoslav
president Slobodan Milošević, said the international tide on slavery
reparations was quickly shifting and urged the UK to change its current
position on the issue.

Robinson spoke exclusively to the Guardian ahead of UNESCO’s Day for
Remembering the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Abolition. He is scheduled to
make the keynote address on Wednesday at the London mayor’s office to mark the
day.
