Dear List,

We are currently organizing the 52°North Sensor Web Workshop 2015 (third
edition). It will take place on Monday, 23rd of November 2015 and Tuesday 24th
of November 2015 in Münster.

This workshop aims to bring together several users and developers of Sensor Web
technology from different thematic domains and backgrounds. Similar to the last
years, we expect to have very fruitful discussions on requirements, plans and
ongoing developments in the field of Sensor Web technology. We invite you to
participate!

Since November 23rd is a Monday, the official programme will start at 12:00.
This should make it possible to avoid travelling on Sunday. The programme will
end on Tuesday afternoon to allow travel in the evening. For those who arrive
on Sunday evening, we will offer the opportunity to meet Monday morning for
in-depth discussions on specific Sensor Web topics.

There will be no formal registration for the workshop. However, as we need to
get a rough estimation of the number of participants, please add the
information about your participation into this Doodle:
http://doodle.com/poll/q7dyey47g7974eqe

The workshop programme will have the following structure:

November 23rd
- Morning: Individual/in-depth discussion of specific topics
- Afternoon: Presentations by participants and overview presentation about
Sensor Web community activities
- Evening: Dinner

November 24th
- Morning: Discussion of selected Sensor Web topics
- Afternoon: Discussion of a Sensor Web roadmap for the next year

For the afternoon session on the 23rd of November, we are looking for
presentations of your work, achievements, requirements, needs, or plans. It
would be great if you could prepare a 15 minutes presentation for this session.
If you would like to give such a presentation, please send Dr. Simon Jirka
(s.ji...@52north.org) a short email with the title of your presentation. Please
send an email in advance if you have any suggestions for topics that you would
like to discuss during the workshop. We will try to consider this when
finalising the workshop agenda.

Dinner on the 23rd will be in a nice and affordable restaurant in the city to
socialise and have further discussions. However, please understand that we are
not able to pick up your bill, as we do not require any workshop fees.

Finally, here is a list of hotels we could recommend for your stay. Please
note: We would recommend to book your hotel rooms as soon as possible. For the
nights 22nd/23rd and 23rd/24th November the hotel availability seems to be
good. For the night 24th/25th there are still hotels rooms available, but
several hotels are already fully booked.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Fwd: EARSC competition: European EO Product of the year

2015-10-15 Thread Ann Hitchcock

*** sorry for any crosspostings ***

Dear All,

The EARSC competition "European EO product of the year" will encourage
the use of open data from GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems)

***

European Earth observation companies understand how important it is to
be creative, innovative, and inventive in order to react to the rapid
evolution in the sector. The exponential increase in data available from
all sources promises radical change and the EARSC industry competition
will recognize this. For the first year, under the umbrella of the
ConnectinGEO project, it will reward a company which has developed the
most innovative product integrating an element of open data ideally
discoverable through the GEOSS broker services.

Companies are invited to show their interest before 27th November 2015
to secretar...@earsc.org. During the 1^st week of December a first WEBEX
will be organized where companies may be briefed on which types of data
are available through the GEOSS – GCI Factsheet (Recipe) and making use
of the GEOSS Discover Access Broker (Search & Discovery API). Partners
in the ConnectinGEO H2020 project will inform via WEBEX to potential
entrants on the possibilities which are presented.

The competition will run over a 6 month period (December 2015-May 2016)
during which time they may adapt an existing product, develop a new
product or simply promote one they have already in their catalogue.
Companies will be asked to provide a short summary of the results
(Report should not exceed 2 pages) which will be used as statement for

the jury.

This year's award will be announced during the EARSC annual cocktail
where the winner of the EARSC "European Earth Observation company of the
year" is also revealed.

*Criteria: eligibility requirements & metrics*

·Any commercial product integrating an element of open data resources
(ideally data discoverable by GEOSS Discover Access Broker).

·Note: Copernicus data is eligible.

·Report on the findings (not exceed 2 pages)

oExplain what type of innovation product the company offers using open
data and the degree to which the product depends on the open data

oDescribe the challenge: What problem this product will solve/what
solution will this provide? Companies should explain the circumstances
surrounding the development of this new product

oExpected impact and clients to address

*Timing*

·Interest: 27th November 2015

·1st WEBEX: 1st week December 2015

·Intermediate WEBEX: guiding the companies in February 2016

·Dead-line entries: 15th May 2016

·Selection: the files will be judged by the jury to select the overall
product winner (Period May15th-May 31st)

·Announcement: EARSC cocktail late June 2016 in Brussels

"EARSC is a non-profit-making organisation created in 1989 with the
mission to foster the development of European Geo-Information Service
Industry. Their main objective is to stimulate a sustainable market for
geo-information services using EO data."

entering and retrieving whale observations by animal-rights activists or
volunteers having a general interested in nature. The concept supports
multilingualism while implementing well established open technological
standards to address the particular requirements and interests of these user
groups. The innovative aspect of this system is not so much the development
of new technologies, but rather the use of existing technologies to solve a
socially relevant problem. Various technological building blocks and open
source software components come together to an overall system which enables
the collection, organization, retrieval and dissemination of volunteered
geographic information. In this case, the focus of the information is the
observations of whales, which - like no other animal species – stand for an
endangered species’ fight for survival. Not only can this system provide
valuable data to whale watchers, researchers and animal activists, but it
can also help to broaden public awareness and discussion of endangered
species protection.

By awarding first prize to this concept, 52°North acknowledges that
technological innovation, in the end, is needed to support society to manage
the earth’s resources in a more sustainable way.

In his paper “Geographic Feature Pipes”, Marcell Roth proposes Linked Data
as a trendsetting way to solve the problem of linking and aggregating data
coming from different web services. OGC standards are combined with
subject-specific ontologies to analyze complex spatial or spatio-temporal
questions. The Geographic Feature Pipes portray a process for translating
data from OGC Web Services in to the Linked Data Model. This process can
also be used to continually update spatially dynamic Linked Data data sets.
Thus, Geographic Feature Pipes help to build up the Geospatial Semantic Web.
52°North considers this technologically oriented proposal important for
future development of spatial data infrastructures.

This innovation prize was designed to encourage students to contribute to
innovation in the field of geoinformatics. It acknowledges and financially
rewards outstanding innovative and trendsetting concepts and announces them
to a greater audience. First Prize is endowed with 1.500 EUR, plus
reimbursement of expenses for presenting a paper at a Geoinformatics
conference in 2011/2012 (travel, accommodation, fees) up to 1.000 EUR.
Second Prize reimburses expenses for presenting a paper at a Geoinformatics
conference in 2011/2012 (travel, accommodation, fees) up to 500 EUR.

The innovation prize is sponsored by 52°North GmbH, con terra GmbH, ESRI
Deutschland GmbH, the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth
Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente and the Institute for
Geoinformatics at the University of Muenster. These institutions work
together under the banner of the 52°North Open Source Initiative to promote
research and education in the field of Geoinformatics. A central part of
52°North’s activities is the constant exchange of research ideas and
innovative developments between academia and business. Based in Muenster,
the 52°North Initiative possesses a level of potential which is unique
throughout Europe when it comes to the development of innovative solutions
in the field of geoinformation as a whole, as well as in its constituent
applications.

We congratulate the winners!

[OSGeo-Discuss] WG: TU Dresden joins the 52°North R&D Partner Network

2011-09-22 Thread Ann Hitchcock
Dear List,

We welcome the Professorship of Geoinformation Systems as a new Associate
Partner!

The Professorship of Geoinformation Systems is an interdisciplinary
institution at the Department of Geosciences of the Technische Universität
Dresden. Prof. Dr. Lars Bernard and his team focus on various R&D topics
within Geoinformation Science. The current scientific activities target the
design, development and establishment of geoinformation services for
spatio-temporal modeling.

The development of GI software as a proof of concept is vital to the
research activities. The research group has been cooperating with 52°North
for several years, both contributing to the collaborative software
development process, as well as building on concepts and software from other
contributors. 52°North serves as a platform for the organization of
collaboration between partners - researchers, industry and end users - and
disseminates results to a broad user community. Prof. Lars Bernard: “A
strong belief in the underlying vision & idea of 52°North, its strong
linkages to GI Science and the open and cooperative atmosphere we have
experienced with 52°North led us to the logical decision to become a
52°North partner and thus strengthen our collaboration.”

[OSGeo-Discuss] 52N WPS 3.0 released

2012-04-20 Thread Ann Hitchcock
The 52°North Geoprocessing Community announces a new major Web Processing
Service release. The 52°North WPS 3.0 includes the WPS Client API 3.0 and
introduces a new WPS Process Development Kit for the 3.0 Version. Large
scale improvements in stability and performance make this WPS more
comfortable to use. <http://www.r-project.org/> "R" users can now
dynamically upload and expose R scripts as WPS processes. R is a language
and environment for statistical computing. A common set of classes and
methods for spatial data in R have lead to the development of a set of 70+
add-on packages for spatial statistical analysis in R.

New features include:

* additional 85 Unit tests covering all parsers, generators and WPS
requests modes
* more parsers, data bindings and generators
*   redesigned configuration
* the use of "official" mime types and schemas.

Several bugs were eliminated and an extended set of tutorials [1] is now
available for setting up the 52N WPS, creating new processes, as well as
executing and exporting the processes. A complete list of the changes is
available [2].

Volume 9 of the OSGeo Journal

While Tyler Mitchell is working hard to wrap up the work and publish Volume
8 of the OSGeo Journal, I’ve started work with some of our other volunteers
on Volume 9. We hope to publish Volume 9 at the beginning of April.

Please let me know if you are interested in contributing an article to
Volume 9, or if you can volunteer to help put it together. We need authors,
reviewers, editors, and LaTex handlers.

As a reminder, you can also submit articles for publication in the
peer-review section of the Journal.

Volume 9 will also be filling the role of our annual report. So I’ll be
asking each OSGeo Project and OSGeo Chapter for a brief report about last
year’s activities. We’d like to get all articles and reports for Volume 9
submitted by the end of February so our volunteer team will have time to
review and request revisions from the authors.

If you want to help or submit material for Volume 9, please e-mail me
(sunburned.surve...@gmail.com) or let us know on the Journal mailing list:

http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/newsletter

You can find the wiki page for Volume 9 here:

[OSGeo-Discuss] New 52°North Metadata Management Project - con terra's smartEditor goes open source -

2011-02-22 Thread Ann Hitchcock
Dear List,

con terra GmbH, specialist in the development and operation of spatial data
infrastructures, and the 52°North Initiative for Geospatial Open Source
Software GmbH establish a new 52°North Open Source Project on metadata
management, based on con terra´s smartEditor software.

Metadata is an essential means for providing access to spatial data and
spatial information services. Accordingly, metadata is one of the main
building blocks of INSPIRE, the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in
Europe. con terra’s smartEditor is a powerful component of the sdi.suite
terraCatalog for collecting and editing metadata, incorporating an extensive
range of INSPIRE functions. It is widely used at all administrative levels
from local authorities to state level departments. As such it feeds metadata
catalogues all across Europe.

Time, however, does not stand still and both requirements and technologies
evolve continuously. With this in mind, con terra has decided to adopt the
52°North community process to evaluate new techniques which appear on the
horizon and to jointly embrace the development of advanced methods and tools
for metadata management.

As a first contribution, con terra has migrated its software product
smartEditor to this new 52°North open source project. The software is now
available under the terms of the Apache 2.0 license
(http://52north.org/communities/metadata-management-community/) and can be
easily integrated in the Esri Geoportal Server. The smartEditor will
continue to be an integral part of the sdi.suite, shipped with the sdi.suite
terraCatalog and complimented with a full package of support and maintenance
services.

[OSGeo-Discuss] 52°North announces this year's Student Innovation Prize

2011-03-03 Thread Ann Hitchcock
Innovation in use -

Idea – concept – implementation - application

52°North Student Innovation Prize for Geoinformatics

Innovation is a driving force for the development of our economy. Innovation
is based on innovative ideas, on applicable and implementable concepts,
generating new technologies and applications. However, a novel idea becomes
an innovation only if it meets certain demands and unfolds its use in
practice.

The 52°North Student Innovation Prize encourages students to contribute to
innovation in the field of Geoinformatics. The prize will acknowledge and
financially reward outstanding innovative and trendsetting concepts and
announce them to a greater audience.

52°North invites all students of Geoinformatics and related fields, who have
not yet completed a Master’s Degree or Diploma in either Geoinformatics,
Informatics or a related field, to submit a paper outlining their innovative
concept. In addition, the paper must emphasize the innovative quality of the
concept and convincingly describe its feasibility and practical use.

Students may apply as individuals or in small teams (2 - 3 members). Each
applicant (each member of a team) must submit a written declaration and a
tabular CV along with his or her application. An appropriate form is
available here [http://52north.org/52nprize]. The paper should be 3500 –
5000 words long and written in English. All application documents must be
submitted in digital form per email.

Members of the jury are:

- Prof. Dr. Edzer Pebesma, Institute for Geoinformatics, University of
Muenster

- Dr. Ir. Rob Lemmens, Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth
Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente

- Karl Wiesmann, con terra GmbH

- Prof. Dr. Gerd Buziek, ESRI Deutschland GmbH

- Günther Pichler, ESRI Inc.

- Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche
Intelligenz

- Prof. Dr. Lars Bernard, Fakultät Forst-, Geo- und
Hydrowissenschaften, Technische Universität Dresden

The winning concepts will be presented at the opening ceremony of the
“GEOINFORMATIK 2011 – GEOCHANGE” on June 15, 2011 in Münster, Germany.
According to the quality of the submissions, the jury will award the
following prizes:

1. First Prize: 1.500 EUR, plus reimbursement of expenses for
presenting a paper at a Geoinformatics conference in 2011/2012 (travel,
accommodation, fees) up to 1.000 EUR.
2. Second and Third Prize: reimbursement of expenses for presenting a
paper at a Geoinformatics conference in 2011/2012 (travel, accommodation,
fees) up to 500 EUR.

52°North offers an internship to all prize winners to foster the practical
realization of innovative ideas. In an inspiring environment, the winners
receive academic and technical support for implementing their technical
ideas as a proof of concept.

The deadline for submitting digital applications is May 1, 2011. The
winner(s) will be notified by May 31, 2011 and publicized and awarded at the
Geoinformatik 2011.

[OSGeo-Discuss] ILWIS 3.8.6 released!

2020-02-25 Thread Ann Hitchcock

Dear List,

The ILWIS team announces a new version of the modular PC-based GIS &
Remote Sensing software ILWIS! ILWIS 3 integrates image, vector and
thematic data processing functionalities in one unique and powerful
desktop package.

ILWIS 3.8.6 was released on January 22, 2020 and provides some new
functionality. More importantly, it restores pre-version 3.8.
functionality that wasn’t included when the map-rendering system was
rewritten to use OpenGL. The Segment Map Editor, the MapView and the
Georeference Tiepoints, among others, now work again. In addition, there
is improved stability in a large number of functions that were added
between ILWIS 3.7 and ILWIS 3.8.5.

Please check the changelog for details and download the newest release
of the ILWIS 3.8 series [1].

[OSGeo-Discuss] Geospatial Sensing Conference 2020 - Call for Abstracts

2020-03-19 Thread Ann Hitchcock

Dear List,

We realize that many are currently in the process of cancelling
participation in events or are in the process of cancelling events
themselves. Despite the current uncertainty, we hope that the Corona
Virus situation will have developed to a point that we will be able to
hold our conference in Münster at the end of August. If this is not
possible, we are planning to hold it as a Web Conference. The 52°North
Open Innovation Network now publishes the Call for Abstracts based on
this decision.

Geospatial Sensing 2020 - From Sensing to Understanding our World

Earth observation networks, e.g. in-situ sensors and remote sensing
systems, deliver a multitude of data capturing the state of our
environment. These data sets are highly valued by scientists and
stakeholders from a variety of domains and backgrounds such as
hydrology, marine sciences, traffic management, environmental
monitoring, energy supply or smart city systems. An active research and
development community works on new approaches to share, manage,
discover, analyze, and visualize geospatial sensor data. The Geospatial
Sensing Conference provides a platform for scientists, developers and
users to examine current challenges, present best practices and discuss
future developments.

The conference takes place August 31 – September 2, 2020 in Münster
(Germany).  Our focus ‘From Sensing to Understanding our World’ includes
sensor data interpretation, analysis and visualization, tools and
infrastructures for sharing geospatial sensor data, and novel sensor
platforms. Join us to discover, exchange ideas about, and discuss new
developments, emerging technologies, as well as ongoing research
activities in the field of geospatial sensing.

The 52°North Open Innovation Network invites researchers, software
developers and practitioners to submit abstracts as presentation
proposals. This year’s program includes an EDC Forum session, which
particularly invites members of Esri’s EDC community to present and
discuss their work in the field of Geospatial Sensing.

Download the full Call for Abstracts here:
https://52north.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/GeospatialSensing2020_Call.pdf

Please stay tuned for more information.

Best regards,

Ann Hitchcock (GS Conference 2020 Team)

[OSGeo-Discuss] New Version of the ARC Cascading SOS

2009-06-04 Thread Ann Hitchcock (52north)
*** Sorry for any crosspostings***

Dear List,

52°North is pleased to announce the release of a new version of the ARC
Cascading SOS software. Apart from the features available in the previous
versions (rearranging and combining of SOS offerings, etc) this version
includes a new CSV datasource which provides the functionality to directly
include data from CSV files in SOS offerings. In addition, this version
concludes a major internal restructuring laying the base for the future
development of the software.

As was previously the case, the software uses the 52° North Sensor Observation
Service<http://52north.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=26&Itemid=31>
as it's frontend. It was developed by the Information Management group at the

[OSGeo-Discuss] 52North Security API 2.0.2 available

2009-06-10 Thread Ann Hitchcock (52north)
*** Sorry for any crosspostings ***

Dear List,

52°North's Security & GeoRM Community announces the release of the Security API
Version 2.0.2! The major improvement of this release is the preparataion of the
WSS implementation to support HTTP Basic Authentication as an alternate
protocol, making the use of the facade webapp obsolete. This feature will be
available in the upcoming Web Security Service (WSS) 2.1.

The Security API 2.0.2 fixes the following bugs:

 * Bug 154: Empty fields in WSS Management Application yield exception
 * Bug 192: Enable WSS to act as an HTTP Authentication-enabled security
client
 * Bug 225: Show available URLs/authentication schemes for enforcement points
in WSS mgmt app
 * Bug 226: Exception when name for new enforcement point is already assigned
by another enforcement point
 * Bug 227: Exception if specified protected service url is not a valid url
 * Bug 228: WSS management app shows stack trace if no interceptor was
selected
 * Bug 229: Error when applying changes of WSS configuration if all
enforcement points were removed
 *   Bug 234: Make Transferable's attribute lookup case-insensitive
 * Bug 235: Provide AuthenticationScheme that requires no authentication at
all

Please note that this is just a release of the API modules. The applications
based on this API -- WAS, WSS, and WSC.Web -- have yet to be updated.

[OSGeo-Discuss] 52North Security API 2.0.3 now available

2009-06-18 Thread Ann Hitchcock (52north)
Dear List,

52°North developers continue preparation for the upcoming WSC.Web 2.0.1. With
the release of the 52N Security API 2.0.3, another major improvement has been
achieved. This release prepares the WSC.Web implementation to support facade
access restrictions not only based on a single IP address, but also IP address
ranges and subnet masks - a feature that will be available in the upcoming
WSC.Web 2.0.1.

The 52N Security 2.0.3 has fixed the following bugs:

 * Bug 245: Support specification of IP restriction ranges
 * Bug 241: URLs to protected service are not exchanged properly in service
responses
 * Bug 243: Do not use XPath to extract SessionInfo information from XML

Please note that this is just a release of the API modules. The applications
based on this API -- WAS, WSS, and WSC.Web -- have yet to be updated. A new
Version - the 52N Security 2.0.4 - will be released shrotly.

[OSGeo-Discuss] 52°North Announces Winners of S tudent Innovation Prize for Geoinformatics 2010

2010-03-26 Thread Ann Hitchcock (52north)
Dear List,
52°North is pleased to announce the winners of the 52°North Student Innovation
Prize for Geoinformatics 2010! This year's jury of prominent members of the GI
community has decided to award two first prizes. The winners are:
1.

Alexander McKeown and James McHugh from the Commonwealth Scientific and
Research Organization (CSIRO) ICT Centre in Tasmania, Australia with their
proposal "Developing an SOS Client for Use by the General Public". The jury was
impressed by their concept for mainstreaming Sensor Web Enablement technology.
The proposed project will be a valuable addition to the currently available
spectrum of SOS clients. The client described will allow the general public to
consume sensor data provided by SOS instances, thus advancing Sensor Web
Enablement (SWE) technology into the world of mainstream IT applications.
2. Daniel Nüst from the Institute for Geoinformatics in Muenster, Germany
with his proposal " SOS4R - Accessing a Sensor Observation Service from R". He
impressed the jury with his innovative approach of extending R, an open source
software environment for statistical computing, to integrate data provided by
an SOS. The proposed R extension will allow the integration of real-time, as
well as, historic sensor data sets into geostatistical analysis applications
via a standardized interface. This will enable R users access to the broad
range of sensor data sources that support the OGC Sensor Web Enablement (SWE)
standards. Not only will this create a completely new user community for SWE
services, it will also enable users with no knowledge of the underlying IT
architecture to access SOS instances.
In addition to receiving a reward of 2.000,- EUR/prize, the winners have the
unique opportunity to work together with 52°North students and academic
personnel to develop their concepts and realize prototypical implementations
thereof. This collaboration is coupled with a stay at the 52°North Initiative
in Muenster.
This innovation prize was designed to encourage students to contribute to the
development and practical realization of innovative concepts in the field of
geoinformatics. It is being awarded by 52°North GmbH, con terra GmbH, ESRI
Deutschland GmbH, the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and
Earth Observation (ITC in Enschede) and the Institute for Geoinformatics at the
University of Muenster. These institutions work together under the banner of
the 52°North Open Source Initiative, with the common aim of promoting research
and education in the field of geoinformatics. A central foundation of
52°North's activities is the continuous exchange of research topics and
innovative developments between academia and business. Located in Muenster, the
52°North Initiative possesses a level of potential which is unique throughout
Europe when it comes to the development of innovative solutions in the field of
geoinformation as a whole, as well as in its constituent applications.

We congratulate the winners!

Best regards,
Ann Hitchcock
